The Minister of Women Affairs, Uju Kennedy-Ohanenye, has disclosed that police have taken into custody a Uyo-based lawyer identified as Ekere Ebong for assaulting his wife in a viral video.

The minister made this known in Abuja during a press briefing following the incident that occurred during the weekend in Uyo Akwa-Ibom state.

She mentioned that upon receiving complaints about the incident from various sources, she intervened by seeking the expertise of the police.

Mrs Kennedy-Ohanenye who expressed concern over the incident, emphasized that legal action would be pursued against him in the coming days.

In a five-minute video seen on WhatsApp, Mr Ebong was seen in the video standing over his bloodied wife, who was in her underwear, while several people intervened by stopping him from beating her.

In the video, one of the neighbours was heard accusing the man of beating his wife for more than four years.

The Minister cautioned that the current administration would not tolerate any form of assault on women and girls, emphasizing that the law would pursue and hold any offender accountable.

The Minister reaffirmed that the Ministry remains dedicated to a renewed approach in combating social vices that disproportionately impact women.

Counsel to Chief Sunday Adeyemo also known as Igboho, the detained Yoruba nation agitator and activist, Chief Yomi Aliu has said that Igboho is a businessman and not a terrorist.

He stated this in a statement in Ibadan while reacting to a statement made by the Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, SAN.

Aliu said alleging Igboho to have transferred money to one Abbal Bako and sons owned by Abdullahi Umar is a mere conjecture, stating that transferring money to bureau de change to buy dollars is what is done by every businessman of our Igboho’s calibre.

He also challenged Malami to mention the lawmaker that sent money to Igboho for terrorist act adding that they would challenge him for defamation.

The statement reads “Our attention has been drawn to a text press conference by the Attorney General and Minister of Finance wherein he fruitlessly tried to paint our client and those patronising his car trade as terrorists and/or financiers of terrorists. 

“I have gone through the text. Sunday was alleged to have transferred the sum of #12.7m to Abbal Bako & Sons owned by Abdullahi Umar. Transferring money to bureau de change to buy dollars is what is done by every businessman of our client’s calibre. Thank God that his passports and various bills of ladings were carted away by DSS during the ungodly invasion of 1st July, 2021.

A 47YRS old man, Tajudeen Olufemi Idris has been arrested by the men of the Ogun State police Command for parading himself as a legal practitioner.

The suspect was arrested at Magistrate Court 6 Ifo while appearing before Chief magistrate I.A Arogundade in a civil trial between one Ifeanyi Chuckwu and Ayo Itori where he claimed to be a legal counsel from Tajudeen O. Idris & Co Chamber.

His conduct and presentation before the magistrate rose suspicious about his qualification as a lawyer and this prompted the Chief magistrate to ask him of the year he was called to the bar, which he claimed to be 2009. But further enquiry revealed that his name is nowhere to be found amongst those called to bar in 2009.

Consequently, the DPO Ifo division, Csp Adeniyi Adekunle detailed his operatives to the scene where the suspect was apprehended and he is currently undergoing investigation.

In a reaction, the Commissioner of Police, CP Edward Ajogun expressed concern about the increase in the number of people impersonating to be lawyer as five persons had been arrested at different locations within two months of his assumption of Office as Commissioner of Police.

The CP called on the State branch of NBA to put necessary machinery in motion to checkmate the activities of these fraudulent people and  appealed to those who wish to be a lawyer to take a cue from the determined effort of a traditional ruler in the State “The Towulade of Akinale who at 75yrs of age still endeavors to go to law school because of his interest in legal profession rather than impersonating.
