The Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC Osun State command has blamed the incessant accidents on deplorable roads, and the attitude of the road users.

The Sector Commander of the FRSC, Mr Paul Okpe said this during an enlightenment campaign organised for commercial motorcyclists and motorcycle auto technicians in Osogbo, the state capital.

Mr Okpe pointed out that some of the poor attitudes of people responsible for accidents included impatience, intolerance, and use of substandard spare parts.

While noting that there is a considerable reduction in motorcyclists accidents in Osun State, the FRSC boss said the agency would continue to embark on regular public awareness programmes to sensitise those involve in the business.

“We are working with motorcycle mechanics because of their closeness to the motorcyclists. They owe a duty to ensure the safety of their customers so that when they repair motorcycles, they would handle it with much care because technical errors are also responsible for accidents”. He said

Also speaking, an Osogbo-based spare part expert, Pastor Emmanuel Eze stressed the need for regular sensitisation to stop the menace of illicit drug use among commercial motorcycles.

Pastor Eze noted that most of the accidents that had resulted in fatalities were avoidable, but for the use of enhancers by motorcyclists, particularly the young ones.

“It is important to remind our people regularly that they have a duty to protect themselves and their passengers by being careful and avoiding drugs. There is nothing wrong with ember months, we only demonize it by our impatience”. Mr Eze stressed.

He charged motorcycle technicians to desist from encouraging their customers to use substandard spare parts because they are cheap, adding that they must insist their customers pay for the standard.

In response, the Chairman of the motorcycle technicians, Osogbo branch,  Mr Emmanuel Shittu pledged that his members would adhere to the use of quality spare parts.

Mr Shittu appealed to the FRSC to commercial motorcyclists to always use their protective helmets to prevent fatalities in case of accidents.

Some of the Okada riders who spoke thanked the FRSC for organising the sensitisation exercise, urging the commission to do such a programme regularly.

Transportation

The Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, Osun State Sector Command says 182 people died in road crashes in Osun State between January and October 2021.

The Sector Commander of the FRSC in the state, Mr Paul Okpe gave the information in his office in Osogbo, the state capital, while speaking on the Global Week of the Road Traffic Accident Victims Remembrance Day.

Mr. Okpe said 269 road crashes were recorded while 754 were injured and 1,419 were rescued by FRSC personnel.

He added that most of the crashes occurred on the Ikire/Gbongan/Ife/Ilesa/Ipetu/Owena road and that most of the crashes involved travellers passing through Osun to different destinations.

Okpe said, “Most of these people that died in the road crashes do not live in Osun State. Most of them travel from the North and some travelling from other parts of South-West”.

“From what we have observed, some of the drivers travel long hours without resting. And also, some of these road crashes happened in the night and the drivers engage in route violation”.

He said vegetation on the median of the highways was obstructing clear sight for drivers and commended members of Osun State Youth Empowerment Scheme, OYES, for clearing vegetation on the median around Ikire, which he noted would aid safe driving and security on the highways.

He stressed FRSC was also enlisting the support of volunteers in communities across the state as first responders in case of a road traffic crash.

According to him, “There are communities around the major highways in this state. We are training volunteers from the communities across the state as first responders in the rescue of accident victims. So, we are going to engage more of them”.

He added, “When there is a road crash in a particular place and the people of the communities come out and do the right thing as first responders, the rate of death would be minimized”.

“We are also engaging with road transport workers and traditional rulers and stepping up our public enlightenment activities”, the FRSC Sector Commander said.
