The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Usman Alkali Baba has assured the family of late gospel singer, Osinachi Nwachukwu, of justice.

Mr Alkali Baba made the pledge when he received the Minister of Women Affairs, Dame Pauline Tallen, who paid him a courtesy visit at his Louis Edet House office in Abuja on Wednesday.

According to the IGP, investigations over the singer’s death are ongoing, adding that Osinachi’s husband, who has been accused of assaulting her before her death, “is still in police custody”.

The minister and the IGP also discussed, amongst other things, the plight of women in Nigeria, particularly in relation to gender and domestic-based violence.

She pointed out that Osinachi Nwachukwu’s“untimely death at the hands of her husband” on April 8, had caused outcry across the nation and beyond.

Mrs Tallen, who was accompanied by members of the late singer’s family, was equally interested to know what mechanisms the police had put in place to ensure that swift justice was served.

In his reaction, the IGP described Osinachi’s death as “untimely” and “heart-breaking”, particularly, as information from sources close to the late gospel singer’s family and independent witnesses fingered her husband, Peter Nwachukwu, as being responsible.

Mr Alkali Baba said “the FCT Command of the Nigeria Police Force, in whose jurisdiction the incident occurred, arrested the deceased’s husband at about 05:00 pm on Sunday, April 10, at their residence in Lugbe, Abuja.

The suspect is currently in detention at the FCT Police Command, even as investigations are still ongoing”.

The IGP stressed that considering the sensitive nature of the case, as well as the need to get swift justice for Osinachi and her family, the command had approached the National Hospital, Abuja, for post-mortem examinations on the deceased, in order to ascertain the cause of death.

“Also, her husband, Mr Nwachukwu, would be charged to court as soon as it was established that he was responsible for her death”, the IGP promised.

Describing the alleged act as “condemnable, illegal and immoral in all ramifications”, the IGP said it was hard to understand why anyone would want to take the life of another.

The police, he added, remained committed to ensuring that cases of this magnitude, including domestic violence, sexual and gender-based violence, rape, and other social vices, were accorded utmost attention with a view to bringing perpetrators to justice.

The autopsy scheduled to have been performed on late gospel singer, Osinachi Nwachukwu by the National hospital authorities in Abuja to ascertain the cause of her death, did not take place due to absence of some family members of both Osinachi and Pastor Peter Nwachukwu, the husband.

When contacted, FCT Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Josephine Adeh, confirmed that the autopsy was necessary because “it is part of the investigation”.

Sources said preliminary processes for the autopsy however kick-started on Thursday night at the National Hospital pending the arrival of the required family members.

A source explained further, “You know there have been speculations about her death. Since the husband is insisting that she died due to an illness and there are other speculations, the autopsy will clear the air. It did not hold because every party that was to be represented was not here. That is why they specislists could not do it.

Recall that 42 year old Osinachi died on Friday, last week at the National Hospital, Abuja.

Due to the issue of wife battering rampaging the country, with the recent case of a Nigerian gospel Singer, Osinachi Nwachuckwu who was allegedly beaten to death by her husband, Peter Nwanchukwu, last week Friday, a Nigerian lady, Ada has gone on social media, to call off her wedding coming up in three days time.

She said and I quote:

I never wanted to bring this here but I have to, I am a type of person who likes to keep my relationship away from social media but this is for clarification purposes.

This was my secondary school classmate who I thought I knew to an extent. On December 28, 2020 he did the 1st and 2nd stage in my family marriage list which bride price happened to be on the 2nd stage which he paid. After he paid my bride price he started maltreating me.

2021 was hell for me that at some point I left home, after everything we settled around November 2021 which he promised he will never beat me again. But still nothing CHANGED.

This is my reason why I am CALLING OFF the Traditional Marriage (Igba Ngwu) and White Wedding ceremony between me and DAVID OKIKE OFF. (Beating me was not part of the agreement in our Marriage)

This Saturday should have been my traditional and white wedding ceremony day…. I supposed to be happy but I am not.

For couple of months now I have been going through a lot.

I have been in a TOXIC RELATIONSHIP for OVER a YEAR now.. I am aware that this may be a shock to many people, especially people from my Home Town. My supposed husband HIT and ABUSE me in any slightest provocation, just small misunderstanding without minding what condition I am into.

Because I have chosen ME and I will not live my entire life facing DOMESTIC VIOLENCE. My supposed husband is full of RAGE, BEATING me with his Belt, Stick, Broom is his DAILY ROUTINE, Many a times he had lifted his hammer 🔨 on me and this Monday last week just because of little misunderstanding he beat me mercilessly and on the process of it he rushed into his mother’s kitchen for a cutlass, when I noticed he’s going for a weapon I locked the door behind him which he forcefully opened, both his mother and Sisters and some neighbors were begging him not to cut me with the cutlass … With all these things and more I am fed up.

I AM CALLING OFF THE WEDDING AND TRADITIONAL MARRIAGE (IGBA NGWU) BETWEEN ME AND DAVID OKIKE that supposed to hold on this Saturday 16th, April 2022.

Please to my family and friends I am so sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused you 🙏🏿

But I will not end up with a man who always promise that if I didn’t kill him, that he will kill me.

I am still suffering from unstoppable headache I sustained from the head injury he gave me 3 weeks ago.

The “bride price paid” will be Returned in due time.

Please Respect my choices. Thanks and God bless you all.

Nigerian actress, Georgina Onuoha has blasted Pastor Becky Eneche over her teaching on divorce after one of her old tweets resurfaced in the 2018 tweet.

Eneche posted that divorce is not an option and that many wayward and rough children are products of divorced homes.

Georgina slammed the pastor, noting that her medical license as a clinician should also be revoked over her teaching.

The death of popular gospel singer, Osinachi Nwachukwu, has led to many hot takes on social media and actress Georgina Onuoha has blasted Pastor Becky Eneche over her teaching on divorce.

Osinachi reportedly died as a result of domestic violence at the hands of her husband and this has caused a debate on how Christian women should leave their abusive marriages.

In the post, the preacher noted that people should never make divorce an option because the stress it puts their children through might affect them for the rest of their lives.

Not stopping there, Pastor Becky Eneche also noted in the tweet that most rough and wayward children are products of divorced homes. She then advised people to shine their eyes before saying ‘I do’.

Actress Georgina found Eneche’s post on divorce to be unpalatable and took to social media to blast her. According to the movie star, preaching such as Eneche’s is why innocent people are dying in violent marriages.

She wrote: “Views like this are why many innocent women and men are dying in abusive relationships and marriages. This right here sickens my soul. The perve*rsion of Christianity by the so-called women and men of God is scary.

This woman right here should cover her face in shame. And you will still see people defending such rhetoric.” Not stopping there, Georgina advised her fans to leave their marriages if they are being subjected to physical, emotional and psychological abuse.

She also wrote: “There’s nothing Godly about dying in an abusive marriage or relationship. That is definitely not God’s plan for marriage. Nobody needs to die to receive any reward from heaven. It’s sickening how African culture has used religion to subjugate women since 1900.”

The estranged wife of Ooni of Ife Olori Naomi Silekunola has equally sent a piece of advice to women as she penned down a heartwarming tribute to late singer, Osinachi Nwachukwu.

In the post shared on her Instagram page, Olori Naomi said women should understand that they have the right to say no, get tired of an abusive marriage, cry for help and learn to say no even if the world can’t reason with them.

Olori Naomi also said women should avoid seeking public validation and learn to accept that a marriage will not work if it won’t work.

She wrote: Woman, thou art loosed! (Luke 13:12)
You have a right to say no.
It is your right to be tired.
You can put your hands in the air,
Cry for help if you have to;
Say no even if the world can’t reason with you.

Let God be God and man by man.
Accept that it can’t work if it won’t work.
We always know it when it can’t.
Finally, quit seeking validation.
May the soul of the departed rest in peace
Her song ministered to me a lot of times and even now I say Ekueme!!!!!!!
Rest my lady rest!

It would be recalled that Osinachi, a leading chorister with Dunamis Church, died on Friday after being allegedly injured by her husband.

Reacting, a member of the choir, Deborah, described the death of Osinachi as a painful exit and also spoke on how the church was unaware of the late singer’s abuse, the steps the church is now taking to care for the kids she left behind and other women in abusive marriages.

The press statement reads in part:

“She inspired me to chase after God … I truly wish I had known her better, I wish I could have done more for her, I wish I had been aware of all the pains she experienced. There is so much to be said yet so much discretion is needed.

I am however not one who knows how to stay mute on issues that potentially affect me and those around me. …that being said in order not to be misconstrued, I will keep my opinions brief, the deceased was very isolated from loved ones, much of what happened could have been avoided if she hadn’t been marooned from the ones who cared for her most. ..she not only died due to the compendium of physical hurts and pains but also of a broken heart.

It will be ensured the offending party doesn’t go scot-free and is punished to the fullest extent of the law. There will be many measures taken to also protect the children and her family as well.

Please don’t be a bystander, actively defend the helpless. Toxic relationships are difficult to come out from by one’s own effort. Our legal system may have failed us but we have our own support….please seek out help if you need to. Don’t let the enemy win. Please speak up. Anyone currently in need of support, please do not be afraid to reach out, here are some numbers you can contact”. Deborah said

The 42-year-old artiste died on Friday after spending days at an undisclosed hospital in Abuja.

Colleagues of Osinachi, who was a lead singer at the Dunamis International Headquarters, Abuja, accused her husband of beating her.

A popular singer, Frank Edwards, in a live Instagram video, alleged that Osinachi’s husband abused her on several occasions.

He said, “One time in a studio, this man slapped her just because she wanted to record the song in Igbo against his will. She does not do anything on her own.

“She would say, please beg my husband. She was at his mercy.”

Another gospel artiste, Asu Ekiye, called for the arrest of her husband.

He said, “If what I hear about domestic abuse is anything to go by, then I hereby endorse the call for the arrest of the husband of Osinachi immediately for questioning.”

A police source said Peter was arrested at his residence on Sunday afternoon.

The FCT Police Public Relations Officer, Josephine Adeh, confirmed the development.

She said, “He is now in our custody. The younger brother of the deceased reported the matter and we have commenced investigation.”
