Oyo State Independent Electoral Commission, OYSIEC has confirmed its readiness to conduct a free, fair and legacy local government election tomorrow.

OYSIEC Chairman, Aare Isiaka Olagunju stated this in an interview with journalists at the commission ‘s headquarters, Agodi, Ibadan on the preparedness for the polls.

Aare Olagunju, who stressed that the commission had began arrangements for the 2024 local government election on 28th April last year, pointed out that every necessary steps had been taken to ensure a hitch council polls.

“Non-sensitive materials have been received at the 33 local government areas, while distribution of sensitive materials have reached 15 local government areas, as the process is still ongoing and to be completed at noon tomorrow.” Olagunju stated.

He explained that the commission has robust collaboration with all security agencies to ensure adequate protection of lives and property before, during and after the elections.

“15,000 security personnel have been deployed to provide security at polling units and at our state border towns to prevent influx of criminal elements.” Aare Olagunju said.

According to him, voting will commence at 8’0 clock in the morning on Saturday 27th April, 2024 and come to an end at 3’0 clock in the afternoon across the 6,939 polling units in the state.

The OYSIEC chairman hinted that there would be restriction on movements of people and vehicle from 6’0 clock in the morning on Saturday till 4’0 clock in the evening, appealing to the residents to make the sacrifice in the interest of democracy and national development.

He explained that more than 16,000 ad-hoc staff have been engaged and trained to man all polling units, with minimum of two persons at a unit.

Aare Olagunju who maintained that trust and confidence in the commission under his watch have led to increased political participation and reduction in litigations, commended the 19 political parties participating in the elections for their cooperation.

The Speaker, Oyo State House of Assembly, Mr. Adebo Ogundoyin has expressed confidence in the victory of the Peoples’ Democratic Party, PDP in Ibarapa East Local Government in the forthcoming Local Government election scheduled to be held on Saturday, April 27, 2024.

The Speaker gave the assurance at a stakeholders meeting attended by Ibarapa East PDP leaders, Party and Ward Executive members, candidates of the Party in the Local Government election as well as current leadership of the party in the Council.

The candidate of the party in the Local Government, Mr. Kazeem Owolabi Arogundade and his Vice, Mr. Olalowo Olakunle Jacob as well as all the councillorship candidates were in attendance at the meeting.

Mr. Ogundoyin said the stakeholders’ meeting was organised to strategise and assess the level of preparation of the party ahead of the Local Government election. 

He added that the PDP remains the strongest political party in Ibarapa East Local Government hence victory at the poll is non-negotiable.

He said the meeting was to impress it on all stakeholders the need for everyone to work in unison for the victory of the party.

According to the Speaker, the full campaign for the candidates continues in all the major streets, communities, and villages in Eruwa and Lanlate 

” PDP in Ibarapa East Local Government is ready for the Local Government election coming up on the 27th of April, 2024. The stakeholders meeting is to hear from party chieftains and members how far we have gone vis-a-vis our preparation and to also perfect our plans to win convincingly come April, 27. I want to appeal to all our party members to put aside their differences and work together for the victory of the party. We have good and sellable candidates, Hon. Kazeem Owolabi Arogundade (PDP Chairmanship Candidate) and Hon. Olalowo Olakunle Jacob (PDP Vice Chairmanship Candidate) and we shall leave no stone unturned in campaigning for them. ” Oyo Speaker stressed 

Other party chieftains who spoke at the stakeholders meeting pledged their loyalty and commitment to the party.

The meeting was attended by former member representing Ibarapa East/Ido Federal Constituency, Hon. Yemi Taiwo, Chairman, Ibarapa East Local Government, Hon. Gbenga Obalowo, Oyo Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Miss wasilat Adegoke, Hon Ojoawo, a former Oyo State House of Assembly Member, Hon Dimeji Oladapo, Senatorial chairman, Alhaji Kamorudeen Adeyemi, Party Chairman, Alhaji Sikiru Adebisi, Chairman, Oyo State Tipper, Lorry and Quarry Park Management System, Alhaji Akeem Akintola Kuso, Alhaji Kasali Morakinyo, Prince Opadeye and Prince Biodun Olabiyi among others.

… Visits DSS Office, Ibadan

The Oyo State Independent Electoral Commission (OYSIEC), on Monday, continued its effort to attain a peaceful election with a visit to the Department of State Services,  Aleyinloye, Ibadan.

Speaking on the visit, the OYSIEC Chairman, Aare Isiaka Abiola Olagunju, SAN, said the visit was to seek Collaboration with the command so that the electorates will have the confidence to troop out en masse and vote on election day.

He described voter apathy as the greatest challenge and called for concerted efforts among all the security agencies in the state to prevent molestation and harassment on election day.

Olagunju explained that it was important for residents to partake in the forthcoming local government councils election, urging them to see their participation in the poll as a responsibility and duty to be performed as citizens of the state.

He speaks further” The purpose is to further our Collaboration with the security agencies, you recall that we have visited the police, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defense Corps, it is also important for us to visit the DSS too to seek their Collaboration for the peaceful conduct of the election, that is why we were there and we are very glad that they have assured us of their Collaboration and assistance in ensuring that election is peaceful and orderly.

“ Before the election, we are going to meet all the security agencies again to further strengthen our measures being put in place, so far, there is no problem 

“ Our message has always been that residents should be assured that the election will be peaceful, transparent, free, and fair, what we want them to do is to  troop out  en masse on the 27th of April, and we assured that their votes will count “

… urges political parties to maintain a peaceful relationship

The Chairman, Oyo State Independent Electoral Commission (OYSIEC ), Aare Isiaka Abiola Olagunju, SAN, has called on political parties in the state to uphold the laws guiding the conduct of Local Government Councils election in the state and maintain harmonious relationships to have a peaceful election. 

Olagunju, while speaking during a meeting with members of the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC), Oyo State, held on Thursday at the Headquarters of the Commission, Agodi, Ibadan, sought continued cooperation and understanding of members of the political parties participating in the forthcoming election in a bid to have free, fair, transparent and acceptable elections.

While enumerating plans mapped out by the Commission ahead of the poll, Olagunju hinted that the pasting of voter registers is ongoing across the polling units for eligible voters to verify their names.

He reiterated that a permanent voter’s card would be the only document to be used for voting on the day of the election as agreed at previous engagements with the political parties.

While responding to questions and issues raised at the meeting, the OYSIEC boss explained that the police and some other security agencies have promised to collaborate with OYSIEC to have a successful election, noting that the Western Nigeria Security Network (WNSN) also known as Amotekun Corps will not be engaged for election activities.

He appealed to IPAC to present representatives to jointly monitor the electoral process, particularly during the distribution and delivery of voting materials across polling units.

He admonished political parties not to compromise with the election guidelines but to contribute their quota as true citizens of Oyo state to its development.

In his remarks, the IPAC Chairman, Oyo State, Otunba Adegbenro Fagbemi, revealed that the meeting provided a platform to identify challenges that could be confronted during the election.

He expressed the readiness of IPAC members to observe the distribution of election materials across the seven geopolitical zones of the state. 

He called for concerted efforts from relevant stakeholders and residents of the state to have a replica of the last general elections, which he said were peaceful.

In their separate remarks, the Secretary, All Progressives Congress, Oyo State, Alhaji Tajudeen Olanite and Mr.Kayode Babayemi of African Action Congress, urged members of participating political parties to abide by the election rules and regulations.

Kayode Babayemi also submitted that engagement with the security agencies and other relevant stakeholders is key to the success of the election, scheduled for April 27, 2024.

The meeting had in attendance representatives of participating political parties, OYSIEC Commissioners and the Directors of the commission.
