The immediate past Minister of Women Affairs, Dame Pauline Tallen, has urged President Bola Tinubu to fulfill his promise to implement the 35 per cent affirmative action for women in appointments.

Tallen, who made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Monday, said women played critical roles during Tinubu’s electioneering campaign and his eventual victory.

According to her, she strongly believes that the president will appoint and empower more women than his predecessors because he has always believed in women’s crucial roles in governance and politics.

She said: “It is a known fact that in every election, women play critical roles in the campaign, especially the last minute door-to-door campaign, and the last general election was not an exception.

The actual campaign that brings votes is usually done by women, it is called door-to-door campaign, and women are the engine of that campaign. That is why we always clamour that women are not often fairly treated at the end of elections.

The President promised in his inaugural speech to give special attention to women and youths in line with the 35 per cent affirmative action for women. He believes in working with women and supporting them, I urge him to fulfill it.”

Tallen said women always enliven political campaigns because they carry their roles as mothers into campaigns, adding that their direct one-on-one campaign strategy is always a game-changer in determining election outcomes.

For me, electioneering campaign is not merely about going from State to State for political rally, which is more like a mere jamboree, the big deal is the quiet, behind-the-scene, door-to-door engagements and mobilisations done by women, which usually garners the votes and determines subsequent victory.

Gender equality is the smartest thing to do; globally, it is the smartest way to go, so as to bolster a nation’s economy because empowering women is synonymous with empowering the family and the nation,” she added.

Tallen, a former Deputy Governor of Plateau and also ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo’s minister, noted that Tinubu was the first governor to pick a woman as Deputy, as Lagos State governor.

She expressed optimism that Tinubu, who has a soft spot for women, and supported his wife to become a senator for three consecutive terms, would redeem the affirmative action promise to women.

On the recent renaming of the National Centre for Women Development after Nigeria’s former First Lady, the late Mrs Maryam Babangida, Tallen described the decision to immortalise her as timely and well-deserved.

According to her, the late Maryam Babangida was immortalised because she was the first Nigerian First Lady, who pioneered the advocacy which brought women issues to the fore, elicited national consciousness and built the centre.

She noted that many women became aware of their rights through Maryam Babangida’s Better Life for Rural Women Programme, following which government started giving attention to issues affecting women, adding that she is happy that she has been immortalised.

She also appreciated the efforts of female National Assembly members like the First Lady, Senator Remi Tinubu, Honourable Abike Dabiri, Honourable Nkeiruka Onyejeocha and Senator Nora Daduut, who ensured that the bill to effect the name change was passed by the 9th Assembly.

“Majority of members of National Assembly are men and it is not often easy for a woman to push any bill and get it through. This one was just remarkable, being a rare bill that was passed and signed into law by President Buhari.

“That is why we are clamouring for more women to be elected into the National Assembly, because the more women lawmakers we have, the easier for bills that affect women to be passed,” she said.

Tallen disclosed that the Ministry of Women Affairs under her collaborated with both male and female lawmakers for the speedy passage of the bill to rename the centre and immortalise Mrs Babangida.

The former minister added that she was fulfilled by her achievements in office through nationwide advocacy for women, which culminated in states’ domestication of myriad of women and girl-child rights laws.

President Bola Tinubu says the forces that plundered Africa in the past and still seek to impede its progress today will not find easy inroads into the continent.

Tinubu said Africa was now strong and its leaders would no longer remain passive as they worked to harness their vast resources to better their respective countries.

“But here and now, let it be said to whomever the new scramblers might be, that our continent may be old, but our spirit is new. And it is strong. The bad that took place in the past must stay there. It shall never be repeated,” Tinubu told his counterparts at the Fifth Mid-Year Coordination Meeting of the African Union in Nairobi, the Kenyan capital.

The forum also featured deliberations amongst the various regional economic communities, the regional mechanisms and the African Union Member-States.

The President’s Special Adviser on Special Duties, Communications and Strategy, Dele Alake, revealed this in a statement he signed on Sunday titled: ‘In maiden speech at AU, President Tinubu affirms Africa’s unity and strength, rejects notion of a new scramble for continent.’

In his address titled: ‘Address on Status of Regional Integration in ECOWAS,’ Tinubu emphasised the need for Africa to overcome its challenges and work towards a prosperous future, focusing on inclusive growth, good governance and leveraging the opportunities provided by the African Continental Free Trade Area.

However, the President vehemently rejected the notion of a new scramble for Africa, noting that “some observers assert a new scramble for Africa is afoot and it is much like the old scramble that plundered our continent.”

The Nigerian leader called for good governance to ensure a prosperous future for Africa, free from the exploitations of the past.

“As Africans, we forge ahead, no matter the barriers thrust before us. The world we inhabit is often unkind and uncertain. History and current global difficulties argue against our future success.

“Lessons of the past few years teach us that the world economy can be disrupted in ways that halt progress and invite downturn. Our nations can suddenly find themselves in dire situations if we choose to be passive observers of our fate.

“Such passivity does not commend itself to me. I will not listen to it. Neither should any African. The challenges we face mean that governance will be difficult,” Tinubu said.

Harping on his message to uphold democracy in West Africa, the Nigerian leader, as ECOWAS Chairman, announced plans to strengthen the bloc’s Standby Force to deter coups and combat terrorism in the sub-region.

He argued that while leaders sat to discuss vital economic matters, it would be impossible to implement the outcomes of the discussions unless due consideration was given to the instability and conflict ravaging many African states.

By Olusegun Folarin

Experts in the Agriculture sector have appealed to President Bola Tinubu to appoint a technocrat into the Ministry of Agriculture and Water Resources towards addressing food shortage in the country.

An expert, Mr Oladele Awoleri made the call in an interview with Radio Nigeria while reacting to the state of emergency proclamation by the President on food security.

Mr Awoleri, who described the declaration of state of emergency on the food security as laudable, said the appointment of a technocrat was necessary to drive the vision of the President Tinubu to address food shortage and poverty.

Mr Awoleri also stressed the need for the president to address the security concerns of Nigerians, especially farmers to boost their confidence to return to their farms.

A farmer, Mr Ayopo Somefun while commending the president for state of emergency declaration on food security, said there was the need for the Federal Government to replicate the five hundred thousand hectares cultivation in states for crops where each has a comparative advantage.

Mr Somefun appealed to President Tinubu to empower families towards the realisation of the food security agenda.

Contributing, the Secretary, All Farmers Association of Nigeria, AFAN, Ogun State Chapter, Prince Abiodun Ogunjimi, who described the step of President Tinubu as welcome development, expressed optimism that the decision would go a long way to address prices of food items and hunger in the country.

Prince Ogunjimi appealed to the federal Government to ensure prompt implementation various initiatives geared towards addressing food insecurity in the interest of Nigerians.

Labour

The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, is set to engage President Bola Tinubu on the agitation for extension of civil servants’ retirement age to 65 years.

The National President, NLC, Joe Ajaero, told newsmen on Sunday  that labour was not relenting on the agitation, which started under the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari.

Report has it that the NLC had during the 2023 May Day celebrations appealed to Buhari to extend the retirement age for civil servants.

But then Minister of State for Labour, Festus Keyamo, told newsmen that Buhari, in the twilight of his administration, would not be able to deal with the matter.

“The process to effect that change to 65 years (if it is accepted by the Federal Government) is a process that cannot be completed before the end of the tenure of Buhari.  So, I guess the new administration will have to deal with that,” Keyamo had said.

Already, teachers under the employment of government at all levels, are enjoying the implementation of a new retirement age.

When asked on Sunday, if the congress would meet with Tinubu on the matter, the NLC President said, “Yes. Only few other establishments, including the core civil service, are now left out.

“We are, therefore, demanding that the age of retirement and length of service in the entire public service, including the civil service, be reviewed upward to 65 years of age and 40 years of service.”

Also speaking with our correspondent, the National Treasurer, NLC, Hakeem Ambali, said, “Yes, we are going to negotiate that, to avert the imminent crisis and suffering of our members whose Contributory Pension Deduction were not remitted to their PFAS by a large percentage of labour employers.

“So that they (workers) are not pushed to premature death and penury, such window of five years is expected to form a transition period of normalising the scheme.”

Education

The leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, on Tuesday, visited President Bola Tinubu over the student loan bill that he signed into law on Monday.

The NANS delegation was led by the body’s National President, Umar Barambu.

Speaking to State House Correspondents after engagements with the President, Barambu revealed that they urged him to review the constitution of the special committee that will oversee the new Nigerian Education Loan Fund to include student representatives.

The NANS President said: “We thank the President for the Students Loan Bill.

“We have outlined the clauses that we are not too comfortable with. And part of them is the issue of that board that we mentioned to the President, which we said at least students’ representatives should be captured and there are some organisations that they put there, which to us, they don’t need to be there.

“We gave him an example, most especially the Nigerian Bar Association, ASUU. ASUU has its own microfinance bank running their own affairs without students on their board. So, I don’t think it’s wise for us to allow them to be inside our own board because it is purely students.

“We are the major stakeholders of that bank. So I don’t think allowing them to be there is good. Not only them, we mentioned a lot of people that they should remove and put more of student-oriented organisation.”

In response, the President promised to consider the requests of the NANS leaders but urged the students’ body to ensure unity among its members across the country to achieve more.  “You have to promote unity and stability among each other. You have to employ democratic means in your programmes and elections. I have to say anyone who is unable to accept and celebrate a free and fair election, does not deserve the joy of victory,” Tinubu said.

The President stressed that poverty should not prevent any Nigerian from obtaining quality education at the highest levels.

President Bola Tinubu will on Monday June 12, address Nigerians in commemoration of Democracy Day.

The Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume, disclosed this on Friday while addressing a world press conference in Abuja, to unveil the programmes for this year’s Democracy Day.

According to Akume, this year’s celebration would be on low-key, owing to the fact that the nation just came out of an elaborate Presidential Inauguration Programme.

“It is important to note that the Democracy Day has been reviewed to be celebrated annually from May, 29 to June 12 to honour the heroes who championed the struggle and made extra-ordinary sacrifice for the enthronement of the democratic rule in Nigeria from 1999 till date”. he noted.

“However, May 29 remains the date or anniversary of handing over power, and this happens every four (4) years according to the Nigerian Constitution. “To commemorate this year’s anniversary, it is expedient for citizens and foreigners alike to take stock of how the nation has fared so far.

It is in light of this that the theme of this year’s Democracy celebration is ‘Hope Reassured’. “It is pertinent to state that having had an elaborate Presidential inauguration this year.

“Presidential Broadcast, Monday, 12th June, 2023, 7:00am. “The events will be broadcast live on all major stations and streamed on various social media platforms” Akume stated.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has suspended the Central Bank Governor, Mr Godwin Emefiele, CFR, from office with immediate effect,” the Director of Information, Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation Willie Bassey said in a statement on Friday.
“This is a sequel to the ongoing investigation of his office and the planned reforms in the financial sector of the economy.
“Mr Emefiele has been directed to immediately hand over the affairs of his office to the Deputy Governor (Operations Directorate) Folashodun Adebisi Shonubi, who will act as the Central Bank Governor pending the conclusion of the investigation and the reforms.”
The development is coming less than two weeks after President Tinubu assumed office and months after the CBN’s heavily-criticized naira swap.
Former President Muhammadu Buhari’s government introduced new bank notes late last year, arguing it would help tackle vote-buying, insecurity and fight inflation among others.
But weeks before the polls, the country was hit with a cash crunch as the CBN withdrew the old notes. The development drew criticisms from top personalities.
Some state governors even took the matter to court with Tinubu faulting the implementation of the policy.
During his inauguration, President Tinubu did not mince words about the naira swap policy and promised to review it.
He maintained that it “was too harshly applied by the CBN given the number of unbanked Nigerians.
“The policy shall be reviewed. In the meantime, my administration will treat both currencies as legal tender”he said.

Energy

The Chief Spokesman for the All Progressives Congress Presidential Campaign, Festus Keyamo, has said President Bola Tinubu did not remove fuel subsidy.

According to him, a section of the media is “mischievously twisting the narrative to read that Tinubu’s government has removed subsidy,” despite President Tinubu proclaiming that subsidy was gone while giving his inaugural speech on May 29.

Keyamo, who is also a former Minister of State for Labour, rather said that Tinubu’s administration only inherited a regime where there was no provision for subsidy in the 2023 Appropriation Act beginning June 2023 and the Petroleum Industry Act, which is now extant, has no provision for subsidy.

In a series of tweets on his official handle, @fkeyamo, he said, “A section of the Press is mischievously twisting the narrative to read that Tinubu’s government has removed subsidy. That is not correct. Tinubu’s govt has merely inherited a regime where there was no provision for subsidy in the 2023 Appropriation Act as of June 2023 and the Petroleum Industry Act which is now extant has no provision for subsidy.

“President Tinubu merely acknowledged this state of affairs in his inaugural speech at the Eagle Square.

“So, any advocate of subsidy should convince the Nigerian people why President Tinubu should start on a note of illegality by promising to reintroduce something which the law has taken away. They should also convince the Nigerian people why President Tinubu should embark on a present illegality that gulped $10 billion of our scarce or unavailable resources in 2022 alone.”

He added that those claiming to defend the rights or welfare of workers should convince the Nigerian people that the $10 billion injected into the economy annually will not jumpstart the economy enough to create massive jobs and even increase the same minimum wage they complain about.
