New Tax Law Would Ease Burden on Nigerians – Tinubu

President Bola Tinubu has assured Nigerians that the new tax laws scheduled to take effect next year will ease financial pressures by exempting food, medication, education, agriculture and shared transportation from taxation.

The assurance was given at the 8th Annual Senator Abiola Ajimobi Roundtable and 76th Posthumous Birthday, held in Ibadan and organised by the Senator Abiola Ajimobi Foundation, SAAF in collaboration with the Institute for Peace and Strategic Studies, University of Ibadan.

Represented by the Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service, Dr Zacch Adedeji, the President said the reforms would eliminate multiple taxation and provide relief for low-income earners, small businesses and the poor.

Speaking on the theme, “Pathways to Electoral Credibility: Reforming Political Parties, Re-engaging Citizens, and Restoring Trust in Democracy in Nigeria,” former Chief of Staff to ex-President Muhammadu Buhari, Prof. Ibrahim Gambari, said a stable and democratic Nigeria remains critical to West Africa’s growth and stability.

In her welcome address, President of the Foundation, Chief Florence Ajimobi, eulogised her late husband, noting that his legacy in Oyo State, Nigeria and humanity endures.

Dignitaries at the event included Imo State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodimma; former Ogun State Governor and APC chieftain, Chief Olusegun Osoba; the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, represented by the Osi Olubadan, Oba Abiodun Kola-Daisi; the Soun of Ogbomosoland, Oba Ghandi Olaoye; as well as politicians, academics and the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ibadan, Professor Kayode Adebowale.

Executive-Legislative harmonious relationship for public good – Tinubu

President Bola Tinubu has restated his administration’s determination to forge a harmonious relationship between the Executive and Legislative Arms of Government in the best interest of the people.

He made this known during the 7th Annual Senator Abiola Ajimobi Roundtable and his 75th Posthumous Birthday organised by Senator Abiola Ajimobi Foundation, SAAF, in conjunction with the Institute for Peace and Strategic Studies, University of Ibadan, Oyo State.

President Tinubu, who was represented by the Director-General, of the Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolutions, IPCR, Dr. Joseph Ochogwu said, that despite the occasional tensions in the Country, the present administration still recognized that effective governance was a shared responsibility through collaboration rather than confrontation.

The President described Late Senator Abiola Ajimobi as a true democrat who served the Nation diligently till his last breath, adding that his contributions to the Nation’s Democracy could not be underestimated.

In a keynote address on the topic “Legislative Oversight in Nigeria: Challenges and Prospects”, Leader of the Senate, Senator Opeyemi Bamidele maintained that the Legislators understood the concerns of their Constituents through public engagement, stressing that they would continue to work with the Executive Arm of Government to make Nigeria better and greater.

On his part, the Leader of the House of Representatives who also presented the Lead Paper, Professor Julius Ihonvbere said, that standard tracking mechanisms should be established between various Committees in the National Assembly and their relevant Agencies for proper monitoring of the implementation of oversight visits.

Speaking, the Wife of the Late Senator Abiola Ajimobi and the President of the Senator Abiola Ajimobi Foundation, Mrs Florence Ajimobi commended all the stakeholders for supporting the Programme since the demise of her husband, adding that, his legacy would continue to linger in the hearts of the people.

In attendance were, the children and family of late Senator Abiola Ajimobi, National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Alhaji Abdullah Ganduje, Imo State Governor, Senator Hope Uzodinma, Chairman, Federal Inland Revenue Service, FIRS, Mr Zaccheus Adedeji, former Deputy Governor of Oyo State, Engineer Rauf Olaniyan, former Deputy Governor Moses Adeyemo, political associates, erudite scholars among others. 

The Roundtable Programme began in 2018 while Senator Abiola Ajimobi was the Governor of Oyo State and continued till date four years after his demise.

Former Governor Abiola Ajimobi died in 2020 and this year’s Roundtable marked the 7th Edition.

True Democracy Requires Protection of Free Choice – Prof. Osinbajo

To achieve true democracy and produce credible leaders in the country, citizens’ right to free choice must not be undermined.

This was the submission of the Vice President of Nigeria, Professor Yemi Osinbajo at the 72nd Posthumous Birthday and 4th Senator Abiola Ajimobi Roundtable, held at the Institute of Peace and Strategic Studies, University of Ibadan.

Vice President Osinbajo, who maintained that democracy remained the only just system of government, called on critical stakeholders in the nation’s electioneering process to ensure the protection of the rights of the electorates in freely choosing their representatives in government.

In a lead presentation titled “Election Security and Good Governance in Nigeria”, a former chairman, Independent National Electoral Commissioner, INEC, Professor Attahiru Jega said any election marred by insecurity could not produce credible leaders, hence the need to harp on the importance of election security for good democratic governance.

Discussants at the presentation including Professor Antonia Simbine, Retired Brigadier General Sani Usman, Messers Majeed Dahiru and Babajide Otitoju, all argued that most political parties in Nigeria were not democratic and this had been the bane of good governance.

Earlier in an address of welcome, President, Senator Abiola Ajimobi Foundation, SAAF, Dr. Florence Ajimobi said when the process of attaining public leadership was effectively and transparently harnessed, a better-managed citizenry would emerge.

Highpoints of the programme were the inauguration of the Senator Abiola Ajimobi Resource Centre donated to the Institute of Peace and Strategic Studies, the University of Ibadan by the SAAF, presentation of awards, as well as, cutting of Senator Abiola Ajimobi Posthumous birthday cake.
