In a heartfelt expression of solidarity, former governor of Ekiti State, Chief Segun Oni has conveyed his profound sorrow over the passing of the APC Chairman, Mr Paul Omotosho, describing it as a monumental loss to the state. 

Chief Oni who stated this during a condolence visit to Governor Biodun Oyebanji in his office in Ado Ekiti, said the development requires the sympathy of everyone, irrespective of political differences.

He extended his deepest condolences, saying that he had already paid respects to the bereaved family in Imesi Ekiti while offering prayers for solace and strength for them.

Responding, governor Oyebanji commended Chief Oni’s gesture, recognizing him as a statesman whose considerations transcend political divides.

Mr Oyebanji expressed gratitude for the state’s former governor’s empathetic presence during this time of mourning.

The Candidate of the Social Democratic Party, SDP in the June 18 governorship election in Ekiti State, Chief Segun Oni has approached the Election Petitions Tribunal to challenge the outcome of the poll. 

Chief Oni submitted his petitions before the Tribunal at the High Court in Ado Ekiti.

Speaking with newsmen after submitting the petition, Chief Oni said he decided to challenge the outcome of the election result in order to defend the sanctity of the political system. 

He prays the court to declare him as the winner of the governorship election, claiming that he won the poll.

Also speaking, the lead Counsel to the Plaintiff, Mr. Obafemi Adewale SAN who corroborated the SDP governorship candidate posited that Chief Oni won the majority of the lawful votes, but INEC did not declare him as the winner. 

Mr. Adewale also said they were at the Tribunal to challenge the competency and eligibility of the APC candidate, Mr. Biodun Oyebanji to participate in the election.

The SDP Candidate, Chief Segun Oni polled 82,211votes to occupy the second position in the election, while the APC candidate, Mr. Biodun Oyebanji who was declared winner scored 187,057 votes.

The Governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party SDP in the just concluded election in Ekiti State, Chief Segun Oni has described as unacceptable the outcome and result of the exercise..

Chief Oni said this at his residence in Ifaki Ekiti while reacting to the results declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC.

Chief Oni alleged that the exercise was characterised by inducement of voters and ballot snatching.

He described the outcome of the poll as unacceptable, noting that the process would be studied before taking further step and appealed to his supporters and loyalists to remain calm.

The atmosphere at major streets in Ifaki Ekiti was peaceful a day after the announcement of results of the Governorship election as people were sighted going about their usual engagements unhindered.

Meanwhile, the Peoples’ Democratic party Governorship Candidate in Ekiti State, Otunba Bisi Kolawole has congratulated the Governor Elect, Mr Biodun Abayomi Oyebanji on his victory.

Speaking at his country home in Efon Alaaye, Otunba Kolawole said he took the decision in the interest of peace.

The PDP governorship Candidate noted that only God enthrone, hence he was not desperate to govern the state.

Suspected political thugs, on Wednesday evening, attacked the convoy of the Social Democratic Party Governorship Candidate, Chief Segun Oni, at Efon Alaaye in Efon Council Area of the state.

The Campaign Director of Media and Publicity, Mr Jackson Adebayo, said members and supporters of the party were attacked with guns, cutlasses and other dangerous weapons on arrival at the town for the former governor’s consultative meetings with SDP members in the council area.

Mr. Adebayo, in a statement, said, shortly after members and supporters of SDP had converged on the venue to wait for the arrival of the party’s governorship candidate, Chief Oni, the thugs started to shoot and attacked the SDP supporters with sticks and cutlasses.

“Some supporters were badly injured and vehicles in the convoy were damaged by thugs before the arrival of a detachment of police which overpowered the thugs.”

Mr. Adebayo said the attack came after the the former governor had successfully toured nine local government areas in the since since Monday.

Police Public Relations Officer, Ekiti Command, Sunday Abutu, who confirmed the attack, said, “Yes, the hoodlums went to the venue to disrupt the consultation process of the SDP candidate, Engineer Oni, but men of the police and other security agencies were able to put the situation under control.

“The police have begun investigation and arrest will be made and those behind it will surely have a case to answer.”
