…National Matron, Dr. Afolashade Shona bags Business Woman of the Year Award

A Non-Governmental Organisation under the auspices of the Association of Female Artisans Worldwide, Nigeria, AOFAW, has initiated plans to empower all groups of skilled women Artisans in the country

It is part of AOFAW’s bid to rid the society of poverty, especially among the female gender in Nigeria, a move led by AOFAW’s National President, Dr. Jumoke Aborode, with a vision of empowering all groups of skilled women Artisans in the Country through financial assistance, establishing Skills Acquisition Centres and Commercial Hub for them to perform their trades.

National Matron of AOFAW, Dr. Afolashade Shona disclosed this while fielding questions on a Radio Live Programme in Lagos.

Dr. Shona said empowering Nigerian Women Artisans in Tailoring, Catering, Hairdressing, Makeup Artists, and other female-dominant skills would make them contribute meaningfully to national development and be self-sufficient in Society, saying the Association has been assisting young women economically to enhance their livelihood.

She added that the empowerment programme is targeting every Woman all over the 36 States of the Federation, who will need to form groups in line with their skills so that they would have access to affordable grants and training.

Dr. Shona stated that the Association has some Centres in Ondo State already where many women are benefitting from the gesture extended to them by the Association of Female Artisans Worldwide, Nigeria, urging other States to expect the same in the interest of all.

The Matron of AOFAW noted that the Association is also sponsoring some young women to the College of Education on Scholarship as part of ways to contribute to national development, devoid of crimes and criminality being caused by Women due to lack of poverty or idleness.

She advised women to always strive for the best in society, irrespective of background and status, saying once they are hardworking, intelligent, diligent and trustworthy, they would stand tall in Society and become a force to reckon with.

She added that all that the Association is doing is through self-efforts of like-minds who want society to be a better place for women to live and prosper in it.

On the issue of hike in the prices of Commodities in the Markets across the Country, the Entrepreneur and Philanthropist said the government needs to work on the Naira Depreciation to Dollars which she said has contributed to the current economic challenges confronting the nation while citizens are suffering to make ends meet.

Dr. Shona appealed to the Traders and Artisans to be moderate without adding to the unnecessary prices to the goods they purchased at a very lower rate.

In another development, Dr. Shona was recently honoured with an Award as the Business Woman of the Year at City People Awards for Excellence 2024 held in Lagos State, which is in addition to many other Awards she has received in various areas including education,  and service to humanity.

She appreciated her husband for being an ever-supportive man in her life, describing her as the Pillar of Support, the Kabiyesi who always encourages her to do more for humanity, with a promise not to relent but rather, she will continue to contribute to progress and prosperity of humanity.

The Multiple Award Winning Entrepreneur, Manufacturer, Lover of Children and Human Capital Development, Dr. Afolashade Shona who is also the Yeye Atorise of Ikeja High School, Lagos, is a business leader with zero tolerance for low performance whose business interests include Amusement Parks and Food items manufacturing.

Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC Commandant in Oyo State, Mr Augustine Padonu has called on the security agencies officers’ wives association to always support their husbands in all ramifications to collectively wage war against insecurity. 

Mr Padonu made the call at the end of a 3-day skill acquisition exhibition organized by Civil Defence Officers Wives Association, CDOWA, Oyo State Command, held at its headquarters, Agodi Ibadan. 

He said diversifying into various handwork training by women would go a long way to assist their husbands who were mostly on the field fighting insecurity for the betterment of all.

 Mr Padonu said all the skills acquired from the 3-day training should be channelled positively to achieve the aim of the organizers as part of their contributions towards a better society. 

On her part, the Chairman of Civil Defence Officers’ Wives Association, CDOWA, Oyo State Command, Mrs Francisca Padonu said the idea was borne out of efforts at assisting officers’ wives to have something doing to contribute to the home front as they believe that men could not do it alone.

 Mrs Padonu said various skills were acquired from the training which included female hat making, food spices and condiments making and many other things being used by women. 

 The CDOWA Chairman in Oyo State, who said over two hundred security agency officers’ wives benefited from the skills acquisition, urged them to make use of the knowledge for the betterment of all. 

Mrs Padonu added that the program would also facilitate a mutual relationship among all security agencies’ officers wives association to assist officers and men physically, psychologically and emotionally to discharge their duties optimally in the theatre. 

In her address of welcome, Commissioner for Woman Affairs in Oyo State, Mrs Toyin Balogun said the skills acquisition programme organized by CDOWA was the right peg in the right hole because of the economic challenges the country is experiencing at the moment. 

The commissioner who was represented by a Director in the Ministry, Dr Folake Fashina said people should not be focused on white-collar jobs but should also channel their energy towards skills acquisition to serve as a bonus to their financial status. 

 Beneficiaries who are also Representatives from Civil Defence Officers’ Wives Association, CDOWA, Police Wives Officers’ Association, POWA, Nigerian Army Officers’ Wives Association, NAOWA, Customs Officers’ Wives Association, COWA, Immigration Officers Wives Association, IMMOWA said the skills acquired from the 3-day program would go a long way at keeping them busy and useful in the home front and the society at large.

In a bid towards achieving the socioeconomic mandate of formal education in an individual, acquisition of skills are encouraged for Nigerian students.

 Correspondent, OkikiJesu Olugboyega in this report, examines the challenges of youths and extent to which skill acquisition has helped in youths empowerment goal.

The outgoing 2019 Batch C Stream One Corp members have been charged to shun evils of the society and make maximum utilization of the skill they acquired during then service year, aimed becoming self-reliant.

The NYSC coordinator in Kano Hajiya Aisha Tata Mohammad gave the charge during the distribution of certificates to the outgoing Corp members held at Federal Secretariat Kano.

She said the passing out was of Corp members in Kano was conducted low key in compliance with COVID-19 protocols.

The coordinator maintained that a total number of 1996 Corp members passed out, comprising 1197 males and 798 females.

Hajiya Aisha tata Mohammad explained that extension of the service year was given to 9 Corp members, while two would repeat the service year for different offences.

She noted that one Corp member passed away last week as a result of health challenges.

The coordinator appealed to them to utilize the skills acquisition training they received during the orientation training to achieve self-reliance.

She said two Corp members were awarded letters of recommendation for their outstanding performances in the aspect of enlightenment on COVID- 19, at Tarauni Local Government Area of Kano State.

Aisha Tata Mohammad advised the outgoing Corp members to be good ambassadors of the nation wherever they found themselves in the future.
