The Honorable Minister of Youth and Sports Development, Mr Sunday Dare has visited the Indoor Sports Hall of the Stephen Keshi International Stadium, Asaba to cheer athletes who are currently participating in the table tennis events of the National Sports Festival, NSF, Delta 2022.

The minister was among the fans and para-athletes, expressing his excitement at seeing the level at which the players were exhibiting their talents in Table Tennis.

While speaking to newsmen, Mr Dare said he never hid his undying passion for the Paralympians knowing fully well that they had won so many laurels for the country and there was no better way to motivate them than to be seen in their midst.

The minister watched the games between Ogun and Kwara (female doubles), Nasarawa and Ondo (female), Delta and Kwara(male) and a number of other Table Tennis games.

President Muhamadu Buhari has called on all athletes to compete fairly and shun all forms of anti-social behaviour.

He stated this at the opening ceremony of the 21st National Sports Festival, NSF, Delta 2022 held at the Stephen Keshi Stadium, Asaba.

Represented by the Minister of Youths and Sports Development, Mr Sunday Dare, President Buhari admonished the sportsmen to stay away from the use of performance-enhancing substances.

Meanwhile, the host, Delta State Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa welcomed dignitaries, state contingents and visitors to Asaba for the festival.

Tagged the “African Olympics”, the 21st Sports Festival announced itself with much celebration and excitement.

The National Sports Festival, NSF is a sporting event where Nigerian athletes from all the states of the federation get to showcase their talents.

The President of Athletics Federation of Nigeria, AFN, Chief Tonobok Okowa says the new board will improve on the lessons of the 2020 Olympics in Japan, as all is set for Team Nigeria to depart for Kenya for the World Athletics Under-20 Championships.

Chief Okowa stated this at the Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba while briefing newsmen on preparations for the forthcoming junior championships and prospects for medals in the East African country.

The AFN President said the athletes have completed their out of competition tests in Asaba, before their transfer to Abuja in readiness for their departure to Nairobi.

Regarding the performance of Team Nigerian at the Olympics, Chief Okowa attributed the dismal outing to challenges during preparations and gave the assurance that the new board under his leadership will aim to make thing right in Kenya.

On the disqualification of ten Nigerian athletes in Japan, the sports administrator noted some of the victims were among those who qualified for the World Junior Under-20 championships, while urging Nigerians to stop the blame game and to support the participants to emerge victorious.

Chief Okowa added that the athletes are currently having their COVID-19 vaccination before their imminent departure to Kenya for the Championships schedule to take place from August 17, to the 22 of this month.

The Delta State Sports Commission has directed athletes and officials of Team Delta to undergo COVID-19 vaccination, ahead of the forthcoming Edo 2021, National Sports Festival, NSF.


The Director General of Delta State Sports Commission, Mr. Chris Anazia, made this known in Asaba, while addressing participants at the COVID-19 Vaccination Point at the Stephen Keshi Stadium in the state capital.


Mr. Anazia remarked that the ongoing vaccination campaign was in line with the federal government COVID-19 protocol, saying it was essential for athletes and coaches representing Delta state at the games to key into the safety guidelines.


Some of the participating athletes reacted to the vaccination campaign after taking their first jab of the injection, by expressing their appreciation to government for taking their safety serious.


Our correspondent reports that the Stephen Keshi Stadium was a beehive of activities by athletes in preparation for the festivities in Benin City next month.

Stakeholders in the sports sector have expressed relief over the return of sporting activities in the nation describing the situation as a welcome development.

They made this known at the Governor Ifeanyi Okowa One-Day Post-COVID-19 Athletics Meet, held at the Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba, the Delta State capital.

The Torch of Unity has landed in Delta State in a tour ahead of the commencement of Edo 2020 National Sports Festival which begins from the 22nd of March.

Delta State Governor, Dr Ifeanyi Okowa who received the flaming torch at the Stephen Keshi Stadium in Asaba, noted his administration was committed to youth empowerment through sports and has built facilities to maintain the state’s dominance in national sporting events.
