The death last Sunday of a versatile reporter with Radio Nigeria, Ibadan Sunday Ogunyemi still remains a shock to family, friends, colleagues and relatives. 

Our correspondent spoke with colleagues on the life and times of Sunday Ogunyemi. 

The Holy Bible in Ecclesiastes 3:2 has given mankind a clue of life, time and season, telling us that there is time for everything, including time to be born and a time to die. 

Perhaps, one of the times the scripture was referring to, represents a time like this, when friends, families, brethren and professional colleagues of late FRCN Judiciary reporter Sunday Ogunyemi find it difficult to accept the news of the death of their beloved colleague.

Sunday Olaolu Ogunyemi was born on the 11th of May 1980 to the family of Elder and Mrs John Ogunyemi of Ogbere Oloba, Ibadan, in Ona Ara Local Government of Oyo State. 

Sunday Ogunyemi joined the services of the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria, FRCN, Ibadan, Zonal Station on 12th april, 2010 and rose through the ranks from reporter II on grade level 8 to become a principal reporter on grade level 12 which he held until his sudden death. 

Ogunyemi was a dedicated, intelligent and creative staff of Radio Nigeria who had bagged many professional awards and commendations as a result of his impressive ability to deliver on the job including facilitation of 200 KVA generator to one of the FRCN, Ibadan FM stations. 

Apart from the fact that late Sunday Ogunyemi was a core professional in news writing, commentary and the use of new media, he also co-hosted a weekly 30 minutes Yoruba programme tagged “Ni le Afrika” on Premier 93.5 FM. 

No doubt, the death of the promising young man is still a shock to the co- presenter of Ni le Afrika, who is the Head of News, Premier FM, Mrs Olutola Daramola

“SUNDAY was extremely hardworking, a goal getter, a team player, Sunday was never wont to grumble, no matter the assignment, no matter the timing, you could count on him to give you whatever you desire” She said. 

The case is not different for late Ogunyemi’s direct supervisor and Chairman, Nigeria Union of Journalists, FRCN Chapel, Alhaji Nafiu Busari who described his death as a blow to members of the pen profession. 

“Initially I thought it was not true, until I called his wife and she confirmed it that Sunday was gone. Death has done devastating blow to me, Radio Nigeria, NUJ. He was a hardworking guy, disciplined and straight forward” He said. 

Some colleagues of late Sunday Ogunyemi who said his death was devastating, still find it difficult to put their colleague in the past. 

In her reaction, Oyo State Chairperson, National Judicial Correspondents, Mrs Yejide Ogundare described the deceased as a bridge builder who sacrificed a lot as the Secretary of the association. 

Deputy Director News and Current Affairs Ibadan Zonal Station, Elder Adenrele Ajisefini said late Sunday Ogunyemi was a diligent and committed staff whose death has created a vacuum difficult to fill. 

Sunday Ogunyemi was horn on a Sunday in 1980 and exited on Easter Sunday, when Christians were celebrating the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

He is survived by wife, two children; Rock and Yaris, and aged father.
