Former Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Mr Tafa Balogun, has been buried in his Ila-Orangun home town on Saturday.

The burial was held in accordance with Islamic rites in his country home  in Ila-Orangun, Ila Local Government area of Osun State.

The funeral was attended By the Inspector General of Police, Alhaji Alkali Baba Usman who was represented by the Osun State Commissioner of Police, Mr Wale Olokode and representatives of Osun state government.

Before his  remains were buried, prayers led by the Chief of Imam of Ila-Orangun, Dr. Abdulhammed Salahudeen, were held for him inside Ila Eid prayer ground.

The body was later moved to his residence, where it was received by Osun State police Commissioner, Wale Olokode.

The final rites of passage for officer of his status which included gun salute were held for the late ex IGP by a police team, having eight operatives, dressed in their ceremony red over black uniform, before the body, wrapped in all white dress was interred amidst wailings by many that witnessed the ceremony.

In an interview, a former Inspector General of Police, Mr Solomon Arase described the deceased as one of the greatest Nigeria had in terms of policing culture, saying he was “an operational icon, intellectual and cerebral officer”.

Mr Arase said, “if you look around you will see that most of us who have come to honour him, are people who have drunk from the fountain of his knowledge, even in death, he remains, my mentor and benefactor. 
“He was like a big father when it comes to policing difficult issues, you can always go to him for advice, and we will miss him for that.

One of the representatives of Osun state Governor and his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Ismail Omipidan, told Radio Nigeria that the late Balogun was well loved by his kinsmen and many people that came in contact with him as a police officer. 

He said, “Since the announcement of his death, all the shops in our markets had been under lock and key. If you notice as you are coming here, no trader is out to display or sell. All is being done to honour the late ex IGP Tafa Balogun. He is well loved by his people.”

Markets and shops across Ila-Orangun, in Osun State were on Saturday shut as a sign of honour for the ex Inspector General of Police.

Many commercial transport operators also did not render service, as residents of the ancient city trooped out in large number to the residence of the late Balogun located along Ila-Arandun road to witness his internment.

Apart from many serving top police personnel that were in attendance, some ex police officers also attended the burial ceremony. 

A long convoy that accompanied the corpse from Lagos to Ila, Osun state had a hectic time accessing his residence. 

Recall that the former IGP, Mr Tafa Balogun died on Thursday, August 4, exactly four days to mark his 75th birthday.

Balogun was born on August 8, 1947, and was named the 21st Inspector-General of Police on March 6, 2002.

He served as Inspector-General of Police between 2002 and 2005.

The burial of a former Inspector General of Police, Mr. Tafa Balogun, has been scheduled for Saturday, as the family awaits his remains.

Balogun died on Thursday in Lagos, at 74.

A younger brother to the late IGP, Alhaji Yekini Lawal, told newsmen that the remains of the police boss were being expected in Ila community of Osun State on Saturday.

Lawal, in an interview on Friday, further said, “We are still expecting our family members living in Ibadan and Lagos. Most likely, his burial may take place on Saturday. We are already making arrangements for that in Ila.”

Meanwhile, the chairman of Ila-Orangun Community Development Council, an umbrella body for all indigenes of the town, Chief Oye Oke, on Friday said it would be hard to fill the vacuum that Balogun’s death has created in the community.

Oke, also the Saloro of Ila, described the ex-IGP as a humble person who treated all religions in the town equally.

He said, “It is highly painful. We are all saddened, all Ila indigenes both at home and in the diaspora. It is a great loss to this community. Not for individuals alone, but for the entire community because he was a prominent indigene. He did well for us in this town. Most of those he took to the police are today in good offices.”

President Muhammadu Buhari has condoled with family, friends, and associates mourning the death of former Inspector General of Police, Mustapha Balogun.

He also mourned with the Nigeria Police Force, an institution he said Balogun spent the better part of his life serving.

Buhari’s condolence message is contained in a statement signed by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, titled ‘President Buhari mourns former IGP, Tafa Balogun.’

Adesina said, “The President recalls that Tafa Balogun, during his tenure as IGP, did his utmost to ensure that the police performed its statutory responsibilities under a democratic dispensation; and his penchant for boosting the morale of officers and men in the Force has been acknowledged by those who served under him.

“President Buhari’s thoughts are with the family, the government and people of Osun State, as well as colleagues and former colleagues of the deceased police chief.”

He, therefore, prayed for the peaceful repose of the soul of the departed.

Osun state governor, Mr Adegboyega Oyetola has mourned the demise of former Inspector General of Police (IGP), Tafa Balogun who died on Thursday at the age of 75. 

This is contained in a statement issued in Osogbo by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr Ismail Omipidan.

Governor Oyetola sends his condolences to the Orangun of Ila, Oba Wahab Oyedotun, former Osun State Governor, Chief Adebisi Akande, the immediate family and friends of Mr Balogun, the Nigeria Police Force and the people of Ila-Orangun where the late IGP hailed from. 

The Governor said the late retired police IG contributed greatly to the nation’s security during his years of meritorious service in the Force including when he served as the IGP between 2002 and 2005. 

He described the late former police boss as a true patriot and respected community leader who made notable contributions to the development of his community and humanity in general.

Governor Oyetola prays that Almighty Allah will overlook his shortcomings, admit him into Aljanah and grant his family and loved ones the grace to bear his demise.

A former Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Tafa Balogun, is dead.

Family sources confirmed his death to newsmen on Thursday.

Details of his passing were however withheld.

Balogun was born on August 8, 1947, at Ila-Orangun in Osun State and was named the 21st Inspector-General of Police on March 6, 2002.

On April 4, 2005, Balogun was arraigned at the Federal High Court, Abuja for stealing and laundering of over $100million in his three years as Inspector General of Police from the Police treasury.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) brought 70 charges against him.

But he made a plea bargain with the court in exchange for returning much of the property and money. He was sentenced to six months in jail.

Popular veteran Actor John Adewumi, popularly known as as Tafa Oloyede is Dead

He was aged 69.

The Ede, Osun State born dude who ventured into acting in 1974 died on Tuesday, 1st February, 2022.

He had his tutelage under late Oyin Adejobi. He has featured in many movies that include ‘Jaiyesimi’, ‘Ayanmo’, ‘Ekuro Oloja’, ‘Orogun’, ‘Akanji Oniposi’ and others.

Tafa Oloyede who was born on 19th November, 1952 is hardly seen in movies these days; a development that stands as a source of worry to his fans.
