24-hour Repair of Third Mainland Bridge Ongoing

The Third Mainland Bridge is currently closed for 24-hour for traffic bound from Iyana Oworonshoki to Lagos Island, effective from midnight on Sunday, February 18, until midnight on Monday, February 19.

The Federal Controller of Works in Lagos State, Mrs. Olukorede Kesha, announced this on Saturday.

Mrs Kesha said the aim of the closure is to address critical repairs needed on a section of the bridge.

According to her, motorists travelling from the Island towards Oworonshoki would maintain unrestricted access to the bridge during the entire 24-hour closure period.
“Notification of 24 hours closure of Iyana-Oworonshoki – Lagos Island bound Traffic From 12.00 a.m on Sunday February 18th to 12.00 am on Monday February, 19, 2024.
“The Federal Government through the Federal Ministry of Works wish to inform the motoring public that the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos will not be available for 24 hours for motorists from Iyana Oworonshoki- Lagos Island bound.
“Traffic resumes on Monday by 12.00 a.m on this bound.

“However, motorists coming out of the Island and heading towards Oworonshoki will have full access throughout the 24 hours closure.
“The temporary 24 hours closure of the Iyana Oworonshoki- Adeniji Adele bound traffic is to enable the ministry carry out effective repairs on an important section of the bridge,” Kesha said.

Drivers are encouraged to seek alternative routes, follow instructions from traffic authorities, and remain patient with government officials during the 24-hour closure of the bridge for repairs.

The suggested alternative routes for motorists during the repair period include Ojota-Ikorodu Road-Funsho Williams Avenue-Eko Bridge-Apogbon-CMS, Ojota-Ikorodu Road-Jibowu-Yaba-Oyingbo-Iddo-Carter bridge-CMS, and Gbagada-Anthony-Ikorodu Road-Funsho Williams-Eko Bridge-Apogbon-CMS.

Third Mainland Bridge for Repairs on Saturday

The Federal Government on Thursday announced the closure of the Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos starting from midnight of Saturday, October 21 to midnight of Sunday, October 22 to carry out repairs.

The Federal Controller of Works in Lagos State, Mrs. Olukorede Kesha, in a statement, said the government was ready to begin comprehensive rehabilitation works on the bridge, starting with repairs of the critical portions.

Kesha said the Federal Government wished to inform the motoring public that it was currently working on plans to carry out comprehensive repairs of the Third Mainland Bridge.

“However, in order to alleviate the pains currently being experienced on the bridge, the Ministry would be carrying out palliative works on the most critically failed sections along the Adeniji bound carriageway on Sunday, Oct. 22 preparatory to the comprehensive repair works,” she said.

She advised motorists to cooperate with the traffic management officials by obeying and observing all diversions as directed for seamless movement.

“However, motorists are encouraged to use alternative routes where possible during the period of the palliative works as the Adeniji bound of the bridge will be closed to traffic from Saturday, Oct. 21 to Sunday, 22nd 12.00 midnight,” she said.

Downpour: Lagos Puts 3rd Mainland Bridge Repairs on Hold Indefinitely

Barely 24 hours to the commencement of repair works on the Third Mainland Bridge, Lagos State Government has announced its indefinite postponement.

It was scheduled for tomorrow, Sunday 17th and Sunday 24th September.

The postponement, it was gathered, became necessary due to the heavy downpour experienced in all parts of the metropolis on Saturday.

The Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, in a statement on Saturday, explained that the rain has affected the preliminaries of the planned palliative works on the asphalt pavement of the bridge by the Lagos State Public Works Corporation.

“A later date which will be subject to weather conditions will be duly communicated for the palliative, ” he assured.

Osiyemi, therefore, urged motorists to continue to access the bridge with observance of safety measures.

Recall that the Lagos State Government, through state Public Works Corporation, LPWC, in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing, had concluded plans to embark on palliative works on the failed sections of the Third Mainland Bridge for two consecutive Sundays.

The Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Transportation, Engr. Abdulhafiz Toriola, who announced this on Thursday, added that the work would take place on Sunday 17 and Sunday 24, September 2023, between the hours of 7a.m. to 7p.m., each Sunday.

According to him, “The proposed works will be strictly executed in two phases with phase one focusing on only the most critical sections on the Iyana Oworonshoki inward Adeniji Adele/Lagos Island.”

Toriola explained that the palliative works were scheduled for Sundays to minimise inconveniences for motorists.

Consequently, the state government released travel advisory to ensure seamless movement of traffic.

Recently, motorists and commuters have cried out to relevant authorities to come to their inorder to prevent possible loss of lives and property due to fatal accidents often experience on the bridge occasioned by several potholes sitting the axis.

Residents stranded

Meanwhile, flood took over major areas of the Lagos metropolis following early morning downpour, shutting down vehicular movement as well.

Some residents in affected areas in Alimosho, Agege, Ikeja, were seen bailing out storm water from their houses.The flood later receded as some motorists and commercial buses hit the roads.

Some concerned motorists decried the failed portion of the busy Ikotun Market Road in Igando Ikotun Council Development Area, LCDA, of Lagos.

Some of the motorists said the road which gave way few months ago has been left unattended to despite several complaints to the LCDA authority and the state government.

They, therefore, called on Governor Babajide Sanwo-olu to pay an unscheduled visit to the area and ensure prompt rehabilitation of the failed portion of road to prevent loss of innocent lives on the road.

FG, Lagos Closing Third Mainland Bridge for Repairs

The Lagos State Government, on Friday, announced palliative works to be carried out by its Public Works Corporation and the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing on failed sections of the ever-busy Third Mainland Bridge.

The state Ministry of Transportation, in a statement by its Permanent Secretary, Abdulhafiz Toriola, explained that the repairs would go on for two consecutive Sundays, September 17 and 24, between 7 am to 7 pm on both days.

Disclosing alternative routes, the statement noted that motorists from the Alapere/Ogudu axis of Lagos-Ibadan Expressway en route to Lagos Island would be diverted towards Gbagada-Oshodi Expressway, linking Ikorodu Road/Funsho Williams Avenue to access Eko Bridge and Lagos Island.

Similarly, motorists travelling from Lagos Mainland through Herbert Macaulay Road (Adekunle axis) towards Lagos Island via Third Mainland Bridge would be diverted towards Murtala Muhammed Way to use Carter Bridge to link Lagos Island.

The Lagos State Government through its Public Works Corporation in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Works and Housing has announced a palliative works to be carried out on the failed sections of the 3rd Mainland Bridge for Two consecutive Sundays commences from Sunday 17th and Sunday 24th September, 2023, 7.00am to 7.00pm each Sunday.

The proposed works will be strictly executed in two phases with phase one focusing on only the most critical sections on the Iyana Oworonshoki inward Adeniji Adele/Lagos Island.

The palliative works were scheduled for Sundays to minimize inconveniences for motorists.

The following alternative routes have been made available for use during the rehabilitation works;

Lagos Third Mainland Bridge to be Closed from Friday

The Lagos State Government has announced that there would be total closure of the third mainland bridge from midnight Friday to midnight Saturday.

The Commissioner for Transportation, Dr Frederic Oladeinde who made this known in a statement issued in Lagos on Wednesday, said the bridge would be closed for 24 hours.

Oladeinde said the closure would enable contractors move the equipment used during the rehabilitation process of the bridge completely to allow both the Oworonshoki and Adeniji bound lanes open fully to traffic.

He said the closure was necessary, haven completed the replacement of the 12 expansion joints and to demobilize the superstructure of the bridge.

The commissioner, therefore, advised motorists from Ogudu, Alapere and Gbagada to use Ikorodu Road, Jibowu and Yaba as alternative routes.

 “While Iyana Oworoshoki-bound traffic from Lagos-Island, Iddo, Oyingbo, Adekunle and Yaba are enjoined to use Herbert Macaulay Way, Jibowu and Ikorodu road as alternative routes,” he said.

Oladeinde assured that Traffic Management Personnel would be deployed along the affected routes to minimize and address any traffic impediments during the closure.

He commended the people of Lagos for their cooperation during the prolonged repair works of the bridge, assuring that it was now safe for use by all and sundry.
