The Vice Chancellor of the University of Benin, Prof. Lilian Salami, has ordered reopening of the university barely 24hours after management shut down the school following protest by students over introduction of N20,000 late registration fee.
Prof. Salami also apologized to the protesting students, saying the institution acted on security report to have ordered closure of academic activities.
The apology was contained in an internal circular signed by University’s Registrar, Ademola Bobola.
According to the circular, the management urged the students to disregard the closure order issued on Tuesday.
Top officials of the institution confirmed the development under strict condition of anonymity on Wednesday.
The two-page paragraph statement reads; “After due consultation, and in the overall interest of the general students’ body, the Vice Chancellor has, on behalf of Senate, apologized to our dear students.
“This is based on security reports from the Department of State Security (DSS) to avoid the students’ action being hijacked by hoodlums; and thereby prevent any form of breakdown of law and order within and outside the campuses of the University.”
It was, however, not clear if the institution has rescinded the N20,000 extra charges imposed on late payment of school fees by the new directive.

The protesting students had defied the University’s management’s order to vacate their hostels before they received the institution’s directive.

Vice Chancellor of the University of Benin (UNIBEN), Professor Lilian Salami has announced the immediate closure of the University, following the protest that rocked the institution on Tuesday.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that students of the institution blocked the ever-busy Benin-Lagos Expressway and the Ekheuan Road over a N20,000 late registration fee imposed by the school authority.

In a statement issued by the Registrar of the institution, Mr Ademola Bobola, Salami ordered all students to vacate their hostels and the University premises not later than noon on Wednesday.

“The Vice-Chancellor has reviewed the agitation by a section of the students’ body on Tuesday.

“After due consultation and in the overall interest of the general students’ body, the Vice Chancellor has, on behalf of Senate, approved the closure of the University with immediate effect.

“This is based on security reports to avoid the students’ action being hijacked by hoodlums; and thereby prevent any form of breakdown of law and order within and outside the campuses of the University,’’ She said.

The University resumed for the 2020 to 2021 academic session on Wednesday.

The agitated students in their argument said it was quite difficult to cough up the required N14, 000, but the school had added extra N6,000 to it.

The management of UNIBEN had earlier announced that students who did not pay school fees within the stipulated time will have to pay extra charges and may likely have their studentship withdrawn.

The increment is for late payment only, it said, but according to the students late payment is supposed to commence in the 2nd semester and not the 1st semester. They also argued that some 100 level students are yet to be cleared and wouldn’t be able to pay their school fees until they are cleared.

According to our reporter who witnessed the protest, parts of the Uniben Main Gate were blocked, causing a traffic gridlock for vehicles traveling along the Benin-Lagos Expressway in Benin.
