The University of Ibadan, UI, is set to commercialise its innovation, research outcomes and knowledge for national development.

The Deputy Vice-Chancellor Administration at the University of Ibadan, Professor Peter Olapegba, stated this while receiving a team from the United Kingdom on a courtesy visit to the institution.

Speaking on behalf of the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Kayode Adebowale, Professor Olapegba appreciated the visiting team for coming, noting that given its antecedents, the University of Ibadan was the right choice for collaboration in academic research and innovation in Nigeria.

Professor Olapegba said the institution had set up a committee to commercialise the many patents and intellectual properties of experts and researchers from its different departments and faculties.

He further disclosed that the University of Ibadan, in the past 76 years, had established the nexus to use the generated knowledge for the benefit of communities in Nigeria and globally.

Professor Olapegba reiterated that UI was willing to partner public and private organisations to commercialise its research products to promote more strategic qualitative research.

Leader of the visiting team, Dr Joanna Scales, said their organisation, Innovate UK, is funded by the UK government to support research and innovation in the United Kingdom and internationally.

According to Dr Scales, Innovate UK is in the process of developing a programme; “The Climate-Smart Agricultural Partnership” which would involve collaboration between the UK, Brazil, Ghana and Nigeria with the aim of promoting smart agricultural practices in Africa to improve food production in the two partner African countries.

She added that Innovate UK seeks to build networks, and promote opportunities in the cocoa, oil palm, cassava value chains, pests and disease management, agroforestry, and to also identify challenges and encourage knowledge sharing between the four countries.

A total of 8,451 students have graduated in the 2018/2019 academic session of the University of Ibadan.

Out of the figure, 265 students graduated with first-class honours while 2,160 graduated with second class honours in the upper-division.

4,670 bagged second class lower while 1,069 had third class and pass.

Addressing the graduands, the Vice-Chancellor, University of Ibadan, Professor Kayode Adebowale said the graduating students had demonstrated diligence in the course of their studies at the university.

Professor Adebowale who urged the students to be good ambassadors of the institution encouraged the students to contribute to the socio-economic development of the society.

The Vice-Chancellor added that the convocation held for first-class students on behalf of other graduating students was meant to curtail the spread of Covid-19.

The event held at the International Conference Centre saw the first class students dressed in academic gowns while each of them was made to receive a special congratulatory greeting from the Vice-Chancellor.

Our correspondent observed that each of the faculty best graduating students took a photograph with the Vice-Chancellor.

The convocation continues on Tuesday with the convocation of masters students.

Vice-Chancellor, Ekiti State University, Ado-Ekiti, Professor Edward Olanipekun says the institution is intensifying efforts at using electronic means of Transcript processing for prospective Alumni.

Professor Olanipekun who disclosed this at the 9th National Delegates Convention of the Alumni Association of the institution held at the main Campus, Ado-Ekiti noted that it would make it easy and preferable than the herculean physical processes.

According to him, efforts are in top gear and necessary things are being put in place for the smooth take off of the online means of transcript process.  

The Vice Chancellor urged members of the alumni association to give back to the institution by contributing meaningfully to the advancement of their alma mater. 

The outgoing President of the Association, Dr Oludotun Adetunberu who highlighted his administration’s achievements to include the inauguration of the Alumni Village, commended the robust relationship with the management of the institution and urged the incoming Executive to maintain the standard.

On his part, the Chairman of the Board of Trustees, BOT, Mr Olawale Jegede saluted the Electoral Committee, led by Mr Olajide Akinyemi for the transparent conduct of the election and charged the New Executive members to live up to expectations.

Responding on behalf of the new Executive members, the National President, Engineer Dipo Bamisaye said the committee would not disappoint members and would deliver on its electioneering promises.

The new members of the Executive include Engineer Dipo Bamisaye as President, Oladotun Akinrulie, Vice President 1 and Isaac Akinleye as National Secretary.

Others include Olumide Abudu, National Publicity Secretary, Afolabi Fakayode, Assistant Secretary, Muyiwa Cole, Legal Adviser, Ajayi Babatunde as Financial Secretary while Internal Auditor position was won by Akinyemi Borode.

Helen Olusegun emerged Social Secretary and Sunday Adelokiki as Ex-Officio while the position of the Vice President 2 was declared vacant by the electoral committee Chairman, Mr Olajide Akinyemi as the sole candidate could not meet the required number of assenting votes.

The Vice-Chancellor, Bowen University, Iwo, Professor Joshua Ogunwole, has advocated improved synergy among public and private universities in Nigeria to record breakthroughs in research. 

He maintained that the best way to get a good result in research is to encourage those that have ideas work together. 

Professor Ogunwole spoke on the university Campus in Iwo, while addressing members of the Correspondents’ Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Osun state. 

The don stressed that Nigeria must create a research-friendly structure and imbibe the culture of celebrating research breakthroughs and researchers, while putting such output into use on a national level.

Speaking on contemporary teaching and learning activities in Nigeria Higher Institutions, he pointed out that the societal reality of the present generation had changed the nature of parenting and made children independent learners, hence school curriculum should be designed in such a way that students could learn independently with less pressure of supervision.

The Bowen University Vice Chancellor who said the institution pioneered online classes in Nigeria, called on education planners in the country to design a framework for e-learning to make it part of the country’s educational system.

Responding to questions on national issues, Professor Ogunwale who berated the sharp divisions among Nigerians, noted that the development was a strange phenomenon, whose root causes must be honestly investigated and dealt with, saying that all ethnic groups in Nigeria need one another.
