Action Democratic Party Governorship Candidate for the 2023 election in Oyo State, Mr. Akim Yusuf says he will declare state of emergency on education sector, if elected as Governor.

Mr. Yusuf stated this while reacting to the recent delist of 50 secondary schools in Oyo State by the West African Examination Council, WAEC over malpractices.

He described the development as embarrassing for the status of the pace setter state which is reputable for recording and hosting first class institutions like the premier University of Ibadan, University College Hospital and International Institute of Tropical Agriculture llTA.

“It is an unfortunate incident that shows the extent of decay in our educational system. We will engage WAEC to get these schools back on board as soon as possible by correcting institution-specific and general challenges.”

Mr. Yusuf, a finance expert, noted that his administration would revisit the regular and continuous measurement of academic standards or performance of students from the Junior Secondary School, JSS1 with a view to identifying individual students’ strengths and weaknesses in a strong guidance & counselling environment to ensure that subject selections were tied to students’ capabilities.

“We will rebuild our education system from scratch by frontally addressing the challenges of dilapidated infrastructure, teaching aid, continuous teacher training and specially incentivising teaching to attract high quality teachers.”

Mr. Yusuf added that his administration would put in place curriculum enrichment measures to expand the intellectual base of the products of various Oyo schools and restore the excellent performance at the external examinations and international competitions.

Oyo State Government says it will sanction Principals and Parents of recently delisted schools by the West Africa Examinations Council (WAEC) for examination malpractices.

The State Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Barr. Abiodun Abdu-Raheem said this on Monday in Ibadan.

Barr. Abdu-Raheem said the state government would sanction both the Principals and Parents found wanting because of its zero tolerance for examination malpractice.

He also warned principals to desist from encouraging examination malpractice which was becoming endemic in both the private and public schools in the state.
“It should be noted that, the Oyo State Government has zero tolerance for examination malpractices, therefore, Principals and Teachers of both Private and Public Schools and parents were earlier warned to desist from any act of collaboration on examination malpractices as sanctions would be meted to concerned staff and parents”, he assured.

The Commissioner disclosed that only the West African Examination Council (WAEC) has the authority to release list of schools that were identified to be involved in examination malpractices and de-recognise such schools accordingly.

He further disclosed that derecognized schools will not be permitted to present candidates for WAEC for a period of two years, saying “however, this does not debar students of such schools from sitting for the West African Examination Certificate (WAEC), as they were mobilised to the nearest school to write the WAEC; only the identified school is derecognized as a WAEC Centre”.

“It should be noted that the Government of Oyo State will waste no time to investigate any such occurrence, while the necessary punishments as enumerated above will be meted to anyone found guilty”, he added.

The Commissioner, however, advised heads of both public and private institutions in the state to desist from any act that could ridicule their schools and portray the image of the state in bad light.

He therefore enjoined the general public to note that no student in the State would be prevented from writing WAEC in the 2022/2023 Academic Session and subsequent years.

Ekiti State Government has described as untrue rumour trending on social media that the failure of the present administration to pay WAEC fee was responsible for the delay in accessing the results of the examination by students in the state.

The Commissioner for Information and Values Orientation, Mr Akin Omole made this clarification while addressing newsmen in Ado Ekiti,

Mr Omole explained that the little delay experienced by the student was as a result of poor internet services on the website of the examination body and not the inability of government to pay WAEC fee as being speculated.

The commissioner appealed to members of the public to disregard such fake news being circulated by the oppositions.

He advised the opposition parties not to always play politics with every issue, saying that there are better things to be done than being petty.

“Issues that are of serious concern to the people of the state should not be politicized. If issues are Political, fine, it can be given political touch and not the ones that are of great concern to the people “, Omole said.

Mr Omole urged members of the public to always get news from credible sources rather than platforms where the news  could plunge the society into confusion and  crisis.

Also reacting, the president, All Nigerian Confederation of Principals of Secondary Schools, ANCOPPS,  Mr Victor Amele said the students have been accessing the results of the examination, saying that any delay being experienced in some quarters can be attributed to network issues.

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP in Ekiti state through its Publicity Secretary Mr Raphael Adeyanju and a former Governor’s aide, Mr Lere Olayinka have recently taken to social media alleging that the inability of the state government to pay WAEC fees of the students was responsible for the delay experienced in accessing their results.

The West African Examinations Council, WAEC, has released the 2022 West African Senior School Certificate Examination results for school and withheld the results of 365,564 candidates in connection with various reported cases of examination malpractice.

Speaking on Monday at the WAEC office, Yaba, Head of Nigeria National Office, Mr Patrick Areghan, while announcing the release of the results, said students’ preparations for the examinations were poor, adding that candidates were no longer ready to learn.

He explained that the 365,564 candidates represented 22.83% of the total number of candidates that sat the examination, saying the number was 11.74% higher than the 10.9% recorded in the WASSCE for School Candidates, 2021.

Areghan said, ‘‘Reasons for this are not far-fetched.  Candidates are no longer ready to learn.  Preparations for examinations are poor.  There is over-reliance on the so-called ‘Expo’, which is actually non-existent.  Candidates simply got frustrated when they got into the examination hall and discovered that all they had celebrated was fake. This has pitiably led to some of them failing the examination, which if they had relied on themselves and studied hard, would have passed like many others.’’

While giving the performance analysis, he revealed that  88.04% of the candidates who sat the 2022 WASSCE obtained credit and above in a minimum of any five subjects (i.e with or without English Language and/ or Mathematics and 76.36% obtained credits and above in a minimum of five subjects, including English Language and Mathematics.

Areghan revealed that a total of 1,607,981 candidates registered for the examination from 20,222 recognised secondary schools in the country, adding that of the number that registered for the examination, 1,601,047 candidates sat the examination.

“The analysis of the statistics of the performance of candidates in the examination shows that out of the 1,601,047 candidates that sat the examination, 1,409,529 candidates, representing 88.04%, obtained credit and above in a minimum of any five subjects (i.e with or without English Language and/ or Mathematics;

Beyond core regulatory roles, Government agencies must always show that they are responsible to the people that they serve and that they hold them in high esteem, according to Vice President, Yemi Osinbajo, SAN.

Prof. Osinbajo stated this on Monday when he received at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, a delegation of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) in town for the Council’s 70th Annual Meeting.

“It is very important that we show respect for our citizens and show that we are concerned about them, that we are not just a regulatory body that feels that its role is just to be a policeman, and all of that. I think we must also show that we are responsible for the people that we serve and that we hold them in high esteem,” the Vice President said.

For instance, Prof. Osinbajo highlighted and praised the prompt response of the examinations body to the issue of some candidates having difficulties regarding the National Identification Number (NIN), where the body responded that due to the challenges with the NIMC portal at the time, the affected candidates could still sit for the exams.

“These kinds of quick responses show respect for citizens,” the Vice President stated, adding that he is also personally happy that the Examinations Council is responsive and aligning with the digital technology age in different areas.

“Just looking at the press reports and what WAEC has done, it has shown that it is very responsive to the needs of society. I was particularly impressed by the new digital certification that was announced some time ago, that if one lost his/her WAEC certificate, you can apply for the digital copy, which means your records are never lost.

“There is no need for the long and hard process of seeking for a certified (physical) copy. I think this is true response to the times. That is very good,” he said.

The VP also congratulated WAEC for its achievement since it was established about 70 years ago.

While highlighting the important role of the Council in the nation’s educational development, Prof. Osinbajo said many Nigerians have benefitted from the WAEC certification over the years.

“It (WAEC certification) is almost like a birth certificate,” the VP stated, underscoring the significance of the Council’s certificate.

“Everyone who has watched WAEC progress over the years would agree that WAEC is a huge part of our history as a nation. WEAC certification has that importance and it has been like that for 70 years. So, I think it is worthy of celebration and commendation, WAEC has done so very well through the years.

“So, I congratulate you, the Nigerian team, and the WAEC Council, not just for being given the special privilege of hosting the 70th anniversary, but also because we are clearly the largest contributor and beneficiary and this has been so for 70 years.”

In her remarks, the leader of the Nigerian members of WAEC, who is also the Director, Senior Secondary Education, Federal Ministry of Education, Hajia Binta Abdulkadir, thanked the Federal Government of Nigeria “for the opportunity to host the 70th Annual Council Meeting, as well as the support to the Council over the years.”

She added that the Council is the highest decision-making body of WAEC with membership drawn from the 5 member countries – Nigeria, the Gambia, Sierra Leone, Liberia, and Ghana.

She also disclosed that the Annual Council Meeting is used to deliberate on providing qualitative and educational assessment, encouraging academic and moral excellence, promoting human resource development, and promoting international cooperation among the five-member countries.
