Breastfeeding week is observed every 1st to 7th August to create awareness about the importance of breast milk to the child’s development, physically, psychologically and emotionality.

This year’s event is coming at a time when Coronavirus is ravaging the world.

This is why the Assistant Director Nursing, the University College Hospital, UCH, Ibadan, Mrs Funke Mosebolatan has allayed fears that Covid-19 patients could infect their babies.

She stressed that adequate precautionary measures be put in place to ensure that babies are protected.

On her part, a Chief Nursing Officer, Mrs Olanike Olawumi identified breast milk as a good foundation for babies, noting that exclusively breastfed babies would have reduced risk of developing non-communicable disease such as hypertension and diabetes.

The experts stressed the need for family support to help mothers sustain the practice.

This year’s theme is “breastfeeding for a healthier nation.
