Residents of Oyo state will tomorrow go to the polls to elect local government chairmen and ward councilors in thirty three local government areas of the state.

The positions of the local government chairmen and councilors have been vacant since May 30, 2019. On the assumption of office by the executive Governor of Oyo state, Engineer Seyi Makinde.

This follows the sack of the incumbent local government chairmen and ward councillors in the state.

Since the sack of the elected local government bosses, appointed caretaker chairmen have been in charge of administration of the third tier of government.

However, last February, the Oyo state Independent Electoral Commission, OYSIEC, released guidelines ahead of the polls stated for May 15, 2021.

The electoral body later postponed the conduct of the exercise by a week due to the Eid-El-Fitri celebration.

To conduct the exercise, the state government has released over 200 million Naira for printing of ballot papers and other materials needed for the election.

In an interview, the chairman, Oyo State Independent Electoral Commission, OYSIEC, Chief Isiak Olagunju said stakeholders including political parties, Community and religious leaders as well as security agencies had been adequately sensitized on the need to contribute their quota to the success of the polls.

Chief Olagunju appealed to the electorate to come out en masse to vote for the candidates of their choice.

Also speaking at a peace pact meeting among participating political parties, OYSIEC and security agencies, the Oyo state commissioner of police, Mrs Ngozi Onadeko pointed out that 9,000 police personnel had been deployed to ensure a hitch-free election.

Leaders of some political parties participating in the local polls expressed confidence in OYSIEC, to conduct a hitch free election.

The state government has announced the restriction of movements between the hours of 8am till 4pm.
