Residents of Ilesa, Osun State have advocated stiffer penalty for indiscriminate dumping of refuse to prevent flood.

They were speaking with Gold fm on proper waste management during this rainy season.

An environmentalist and pensioner, Alhaji Tajudeen Adeniji explained that the natural environment was on loan to the present generation of Nigerians, hence the need for government to protect it for future generations.

In her contribution, a housewife, Mrs Veronica Elegbede said water channels along most streets had been taken over by refuse disposed indiscriminately by some residents.

She noted that the attitude of the people might soon resulted in flooding, epidemic and other disasters during this rainy season.

Other residents told Gold fm that the state and local government authorities should employ and deploy additional sanitation and environmental health officers to communities to arrest and prosecute the culprits.

They expressed the hope that the step would serve as a deterrent to those against proper waste management in the communities.
