Vision health has been described as a crucial aspect of health, which is significant to the effective engagement in day to day living.

Wife of the Osun state Governor, Mrs. Kafayat Oyetola stated this at the inaugural of the IleriOluwa Development Initiative Eye Care Program in Osogbo.

Mrs. Oyetola who is also the President of IleriOluwa Development Initiative explained that the IleriOluwa Development Initiative organized the medical intervention as part of its commitment to enhancing the living condition of the people in the State.

Mrs. Oyetola said intervention was put in place in collaboration with Nigeria Ophthalmedic Association to commemorate the 2021 World Sight Day which is celebrated on 14th October every year.

She advised beneficiaries of the Eye Care program take to the advice of the experts as prescribed for them.

In a lecture, an Ophthalmologist, Dr. Olaniyi Ogunniyi identified diabetes, traumas, cataracts and other infection as factors that contribute to reduced or lost vision emphasising the need to constantly seek care for the eyes.

Dr. Ogunniyi said research showed that not less than one billion people suffer from one eye condition or the other worldwide.

Earlier, the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Usamotu advised the public to avoid over exposure to sun and computer or phone screens as it affect the eyes.

Dr. Usamotu while urging the people with eye problems to visit opthalmologist for care stressed the need for individual to eat a well balanced diet rich in vitamin A.

The theme for this year World Sight Day is “Love your Eyes”
