Equatorial Guinea Stuns Algeria as Defending Champions Face Early Elimination

Equatorial Guinea produced one of the greatest upset in the history of the Africa cup of Nations as they stunned defending champions Algeria by a lone goal victory at the Japoma stadium, Douala, Cameroon.

Algeria, who are yet to register a win in the tournament, created chances and had the ball at the back of the net twice but were correctly ruled out for offside after the intervention of the VAR.

They were however made to rue their missed chances as defender Esteban Fernandez scored in the 70th minute to give Equatorial Guinea a famous win.

It was indeed a day of surprises as underdogs Sierra Leone came from behind twice to play a 2-2 draw with Côte D’Ivoire, while Gambia salvaged a point against Mali to remain unbeaten in the tournament.

The final rounds of the group stages kicks off today as Host Nation Cameroon takes on Cape Verde, while Burkina Faso tackle Ethiopia.
