As Catholics and other orthodox churches all over the world commemorate Ash Wednesday, a priest at the Catholic Diocese of Abeokuta, the Reverend father Frederick Alode has called on Christians to adopt the spirit of sincere repentance and put on the garment of righteousness.

Reverend father Alode who made the call while speaking in an interview with Radio Nigeria described the season as an invitation to draw closer to God and find comfort in the face of adversity.

He stressed that the day which usually commences the 40-day Lenten season was characterized by penance, reflection, abstinence and fasting.

The Reverend father Alode emphasised that the season was a period of self-denial, renewal, reconciliation and admonished the faithful to take advantage of the season to seek God’s mercy and shun every act that is not pleasing to God.

He also implored Christians in positions of authority to uphold humility, accountability and prioritise the well-being of the people, saying that Ash Wednesday was a reminder that they would one day give an account of their stewardship to God.
