The Federal Government’s Joint Border Patrol Team says it has intercepted a foreigner trying to smuggle locally made pistol into the country and has seized a consignment of detonators meant for the production of explosives.

Coordinator of the Joint Border Patrol Team, Sector 2, South West Zone, Lagos, a Comptroller of Customs, Mr Muhammed Hassan announced this to newsmen at the Abeokuta Headquarters of the Nigeria Customs Service, Ogun Area 2 Command.

Mr Hassan who disclosed that the suspect was a citizen of the Republic of Benin explained that Team’s effort to contain trans – national crimes had helped to suppress smuggling of contraband, including arms and ammunition, dangerous raw materials for the production of Improvised Explosive Devices, IEDs.

The Comptroller of Customs also explained that the Team confiscated other smuggled items worth about 870 million naira within the areas around its Abeokuta warehouse while other seizures were recorded across the South West states.

Mr Hassan solicited the support of Nigerians, particularly border residents to enhance the war against cross border crimes while stressing that the team would not relent in promoting effective collaborations with relevant stakeholders to check all forms of violations across the borders.

He explained that the Joint Border Patrol team was established in 2019 with operatives drawn from the Nigeria Customs Service, the Nigerian Army, The Police, Department of Security Service and the Nigerian Immigration Service to operate in different parts of Osun, Ekiti, Ondo and Lagos as well as Ogun, Oyo and Kwara States.
