Nick Kyrgios has revealed that he is ‘heavily asthmatic’ following his complaints that a spectator was smoking weed during US Open second-round win at the Louis Armstrong Stadium.

Nick Kyrgios complained that a spectator in his US Open second-round match was smoking weed.

Although Kyrgios did not quite show the form that got him to the Wimbledon final earlier this year but had enough to win 7-6, (7-3) 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 over Benjamin Bonzi.

Late in the second set, there was a bizarre moment as the Australian complained to the umpire about the smell of weed drifting down from the stands.

At one point, umpire Jaume Campistol had to ask the crowd to refrain from smoking.

“People don’t know [it but] I’m a heavy asthmatic,” he said.

“When I’m running side to side, I’m struggling to breathe, [so it is] probably not something I want to be breathing in between points.”

Kyrgios was full of praise for his rival, though, who pushed him hard right through the match.

“I was literally hanging by a thread. His level today was incredible,” Kyrgios said.

“I’m just happy to get through. It’s been a stressful time. Me and my team have big expectations. Every tournament I play I’m expected to play amazing tennis every time. I feel like I’m playing some of the best tennis of my life.”

Kyrgios will now play American JJ Wolf in the third round of the competition.
