Local governments have been enjoined to take active part in the orientation course of corps members posted to Oyo state.

The State Coordinator, NYSC, Mr. Abel Odoba made the call at the swearing in ceremony of 2023 Batch B Stream 2 corps members held at the permanent orientation camp Iseyin, Oyo state.

Mr. Odoba, who explained that the orientation programme played pivotal role in introducing corps members to the scheme and the host state, said invitation had been sent to the chairmen of the thirty three local governments in the state to showcase the opportunities and areas of needs during the twenty-one day exercise.

“Engaging the youth for one year in the task of nation building is quite a laudable programme that the Scheme has been running for the past fifty (50) years. The three weeks duration of the Orientation programme will play host to various activities designed to ensure the accomplishment of the objectives of the NYSC Scheme.

These include paramilitary drills; physical training, citizenship and leadership grooming, lectures on skill acquisition for self-reliance. It is from this crucible that development, discipline, unity, self reliance and more are brewed.

For a country like ours to attain greatness, youths must be transformed by using a vision based approach i.e focus must be placed on building young people’s strength and skills. That is the whole essence of youth development.”

Declaring the orientation course open, the Oyo State Governor Engineer Seyi Makinde, represented by Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Prof. Saliu Adelabu, reiterated his support for security and welfare of corps members serving the state.

“Let me also use this occasion to assure you that the State Government under my leadership has left no stone unturned in ensuring that you are safe and secured in Oyo state. The multi-agency security network in the State has all it requires to provide water tight security. This gives an assurance to the citizens, residents, and by extension corps members in the state to be able to sleep with their two eyes closed.”

Two thousand four hundred and forty-four comprising one thousand six hundred and seventy-three females and seven hundred and seventy-one males took the oath of allegiance led by the Chief Judge of Oyo State, Mrs Iyabo Yerima in the presence of signatories and representatives of heads of security agencies in the state.
