The Obafemi Awolowo University, OAU, Ile-Ife will host the 2023 edition of the West African Universities Games, WAUG in December 2023.

The Vice-Chancellor of the institution, Professor Simeon Bamire disclosed this at a news conference in Ile-Ife.

Professor Bamire said the university was prepared for the sporting fiesta, explaining that necessary arrangements have been put in place to make the stay of all officials, participants and their handlers worthwhile, particularly in terms of accommodation and medical facilities.

He noted that the minister of interior, Doctor Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo will be the special guest of honour at the opening and closing ceremonies of the event.

According to the Vice-Chancellor, the competition, which comprises table tennis, basketball and athletics, will feature sportsmen and women from universities in Nigeria and countries within the West Africa sub-region.

Professor Bamire commended Osun State Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke and his Oyo state counterpart, Engineer Seyi Makinde for their assistance and commitment towards the hosting of the sporting events.

The Vice-Chancellor appealed to spirited individuals, corporate organisations, captains of industries, members of the diplomatic corps, seasoned administrators and sports enthusiasts to assist the university financially and materially to foster unique hosting of the championship.
