Women journalists and other professional women need to engage in intense advocacy for gender equality and women’s rights to enable them to perform actively with their male counterparts.

Special Adviser to Governor Dapo Abiodun on Investment Promotion and Facilitation Agency, Ms Sola Arobieke gave the advice at the International Women’s Day organized by the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists, NAWOJ, Ogun State Chapter. 

Ms Arobieke said by mobilizing more support for the women’s rights movement and initiative women could create a powerful force for change in society.

Also, the Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Mr Sesan Fagbayi who was the father day emphasized that it was important to examine the challenges that women face and explore ways stakeholders could better their lots.

Earlier, the chairperson, Ogun State NAWOJ, Mrs Sekinat Salam-Opebiyi, who explained that the purpose of the Women’s Day celebration had great significance for gender equality and women’s rights, added that such an occasion would serve as a platform to raise awareness about women’s rights across sectors including social, economic, cultural and political achievements.

The highlight of the programme was the decoration of the Mother of the Day,  Alhaji Sakirat Ejide Adeyanju as NAWOJ matron

Meanwhile, the commemoration of the 2024 International Women’s Day by the Women’s wing of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, Ogun State Chapter, turned into a solemn celebration due to the death of the state treasurer of the union, Mr Abiodun Akinola.

Mr Akinola, who was the immediate past Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Teachers, NUT in the state, passed away on Thursday in a ghastly motor accident.

In separate remarks, the NLC Women’s Wing Chairperson, Comrade Omolara Olaiya, and the Secretary, Comrade Mariam Nurudeen explained that the day was set aside to celebrate the women in Ogun state but the death of the NLC state Treasurer could not enable the celebration to hold as planned.

 The Chairman of Obafemi Owode Local Government, Mr Adesina Ogunsola, who was represented by his vice, Mr Olusesi Babatunde urged the union members to emulate the virtues of the deceased and stand by what he fought for.

The union members, who took turns to eulogize the late NLC Treasurer described him as a responsible, friendly, and selfless leader.
