Red Cross Chairman Decries Funding Shortfall, Calls for Support

By Rotimi Famakin

Chairman of the Nigerian Red Cross in Oyo State, Mr. Babalola Famade, has raised concerns over inadequate funding, which he says severely hampers the organisation’s humanitarian projects across the state.

He issued the appeal during the grand finale of Red Cross Day celebrations in Ibadan, marking the end of a week-long series of events.

The Red Cross chairman urged stakeholders and government bodies to bolster support, stressing that timely intervention could enhance the society’s capacity to serve vulnerable communities effectively.

While calling on members of the public for voluntary donations, Mr Famade also appealed to the state governor to assist the society through donations and payment of its workers’ salaries.

He explained that as part of Red Cross Day celebrations, the organisation held Cholera and Monkeypox awareness programmes carried out in seven local governments for the celebration of Red Cross Day, adding that food and relief items were also distributed to three hundred disaster victims in the state.

Chairman on the occasion, Chief Emmanuel Ogunaike, noted that the Red Cross was established by an act of parliament in 1960 with the vision to rescue disaster victims.

Chief Ogunaike called on members of the public to support the society in its vision of rescuing victims.

High point of the event included the installation of Mr Bamidele Samson as the Vice Patron of Red Cross, Oyo State.

Among dignitaries on the occasion was the Otun Balogun of ibadan land, Oba Kolawole Adegbola.

The Red Cross Society was established by Jean Henry Dunant, who was born on May 8, 1828, in Geneva, Switzerland.
