Veteran filmmaker and Chief Executive Officer of Wale Adenuga Productions, Wale Adenuga has responded to claims by actor Abiodun Ayoyinka, popularly known as Papa Ajasco, that he is broke.

Ayoyinka sparked online reactions after alleging financial hardship despite his long-standing role in the popular TV series Papa Ajasco and Company.

In a statement released on Wednesday, Adenuga dismissed insinuations of neglect and described the narrative as “false and misleading,” while providing details about his relationship with the actor and the structure of their professional engagement.

“My first impression when I watched the Papa Ajasco video now trending on the internet and local TV channels was: ‘Okay, so this guy has taken Papa Ajasco comedy into the public space!’ It is all well and good. I am happy for him, as his money-making strategy using social media has apparently worked for him,” Adenuga said.

The media executive described Ayoyinka as a “versatile actor” who closely resembles the original character he created in 1976, adding that there had been no irreconcilable differences between them.

He said, “Candidly, I want to address the wave of misinformation, emotional commentary, and uninformed public intervention that has followed his recent media interview. I am doing this not with malice, but in the interest of truth, transparency, and the integrity of a legacy that has entertained millions of Nigerians for decades.

“I am doing this not with malice, but in the interest of truth, transparency, and the integrity of a legacy that has entertained millions of Nigerians for decades. Abiodun Ayoyinka was a civil servant with the Lagos State Government for over three decades. He was even the face of the state’s cultural troupe, which endeared him to the likes of Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu during his time as governor, as well as his successors. He retired not too long ago. In fact, we used to seek permission from his office anytime we needed him on location.

“He bears the closest resemblance to the cartoon version of the Papa Ajasco character, which I created on my dining table in 1976 during my publishing days. He is very close to me, and so far, there has been no irreconcilable difference between us.”

Addressing claims of neglect, Adenuga stated that the production company had supported the actor over the years.

On the car issue, we once gave him a car — and Pa James as well. He has also used at least five cars, including a Mercedes-Benz, at different times. And to the best of my knowledge, he has a house in Ogun State,” he said.

He explained that the restriction on the use of the “Papa Ajasco” brand name for personal ventures was necessary to protect its integrity, but clarified that actors were free to take on other jobs.

Also, he has not been barred from accepting advert jobs. As he himself stated, all that is required is to seek official approval from a TV station. This is part of brand protection,” Adenuga said.

Questioning Ayoyinka’s claim of financial hardship, he added, “Now, the question is: why is Abiodun Ayoyinka claiming to be broke? Where are the investments from his over 30 years of meritorious service with the Lagos State Government? What happened to his gratuities?”

Adenuga further noted that other cast members, such as Pa James, Mama Ajasco, Boy Alinco, Miss Pepeiye, Akpan and Oduma regularly feature in other productions, indicating that the company does not restrict artistes from external engagements.

He added that actors typically spend only six weeks annually on set, allowing time for other pursuits.

“The organisation pays according to industry standards and ensures all financial obligations are fulfilled as and when due. Therefore, any narrative suggesting financial abandonment or exploitation by our organisation is entirely false and misleading,” he said.

Adenuga reaffirmed the company’s commitment to maintaining professional relationships and thanked the public for its concern and support.

The Confederation of African Football, (CAF) Appeal Board has overturned the outcome of the final match of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) between hosts, Morocco and Senegal.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the CAF Appeal Board ruled that, in accordance with Article 84 of the AFCON regulations, the match is to be recorded as a 3–0 victory in favour of the Atlas Lions of Morocco.

The decision followed an appeal lodged by the Moroccan football federation challenging earlier rulings by the CAF Disciplinary Board.

The Appeal Board set aside the initial decision and upheld Morocco’s protest, finding that the conduct of the Senegal team breached Articles 82 and 84 of the competition regulations.

According to the ruling, the actions of the Senegal side, under the authority of the Fédération Sénégalaise de Football (FSF), constituted an infringement warranting forfeiture of the final match.

In addition to the main decision, the Appeal Board also issued several related rulings.

Morocco’s player, Ismaël Saibari, was found guilty of misconduct.

However, his punishment was reduced to a two-match suspension, with one match suspended, while an earlier fine of 100,000 US dollars imposed on him was cancelled.

The board also held the Moroccan federation responsible for misconduct involving ball boys during the match, reducing the fine in that regard to 50,000 US dollars.

A separate fine of 100,000 US dollars related to interference around the VAR review area was upheld.

Furthermore, a penalty imposed over a laser incident was reduced to 10,000 US dollars.

CAF stated that all other motions and requests for relief by the parties involved were dismissed.

The ruling brings a dramatic conclusion to one of the most contentious finals in AFCON history, with Morocco now officially recognised as winners of the 2025 tournament following the administrative decision.

Iran has asked FIFA to move its 2026 World Cup games from the United States to Mexico due to the conflict in the Middle East, Iran’s embassy in Mexico.

Iran’s participation at this summer’s finals in the United States, Canada, and Mexico has been thrown into doubt since the war began late last month.

“When US President Donald Trump has explicitly stated that he cannot ensure the security of the Iranian national team, we will certainly not travel to America,” Iranian football Chief Mehdi Taj said in remarks posted on the embassies X account.

“We are currently negotiating with FIFA to hold Iran’s matches in the World Cup in Mexico.”

Iran are scheduled to face New Zealand and Belgium in Los Angeles, followed by Egypt in Seattle.

The team’s base camp for the tournament is currently slated to be located in Tucson, Arizona.

Abolfazl Pasandideh, Iran’s ambassador to Mexico, on Monday denounced “the US government’s lack of cooperation regarding visa issuance and the provision of logistical support” for the Iranian delegation ahead of the World Cup, in a statement published on the embassy’s website.

He added that he had also “suggested to FIFA that Iran’s matches be moved from the United States to Mexico.”

FIFA did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Trump triggered uproar last week after stating that while Iran’s football team would be “welcome” in the United States, they should not travel to the tournament “for their own life and safety.”

Trump’s comments came after FIFA president Gianni Infantino had given assurances that Trump had promised him that the Iranian team would be welcome.

Iran hit back at Trump’s comments saying “no one can exclude Iran’s national team from the World Cup.”

Iran’s place at the tournament was thrown into question after the United States and Israel launched a massive offensive against the Islamic Republic, which responded with waves of missiles and drones targeting Israeli territory and American targets across the Middle East.

Britain and Ukraine are set to sign a defence partnership aimed at addressing the threat of low-cost drones, Downing Street announced ahead of a visit from Ukraine’s leader.

Since the start of the US-Israeli war with Iran late last month, Tehran has mainly used ballistic missiles to attack Israel but has relied on drones to strike targets in Gulf States.

The UK-Ukraine agreement will “boost global defensive capability against the proliferation of low-cost, high-tech military hardware, including drones”, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer’s office said in a statement.

It seeks to leverage Ukraine’s “expertise” in fending off drones from its years-long war with Russia, as well as Britain’s industrial base, “to manufacture and supply drones and innovative capabilities”.

“Drones, electronic warfare and rapid battlefield innovation are now central to national and economic security, and that has only been further magnified by the conflict in the Middle East,” Starmer said in the statement.

“By deepening our defence partnerships, we are strengthening Ukraine’s ability to defend itself from Russia’s brutal, ongoing attacks, while ensuring the UK and our allies are better prepared to meet the threats of the future.”

The deal would also provide 500,000 pounds ($670,000) to fund an “AI Centre of Excellence” to be integrated into the Ukrainian Ministry of Defence.

Two people have died following an outbreak of “invasive” meningitis, including one student at the University of Kent.

BBC South East understands that a further 11 people from the Canterbury area are currently in hospital and reported to be seriously ill. It is understood that most are aged between 18 and 21 and a number are students at the university.

Both persons who have died are believed to be aged between 18 and 21, while a University of Kent spokesperson confirmed one of the two was a student at the university.

More than 30,000 students, staff and their families are being contacted by the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) to inform them of the situation.

Meningitis is an infection of the protective membranes that surround the brain and spinal cord and can be serious if not treated promptly.

A UKHSA spokesperson said it was arranging antibiotics for some students in the Canterbury area following the outbreak, and that the specific strain of the disease has not been identified.

A letter from the UKHSA to University of Kent students and staff, seen by the BBC, said people living and working in certain blocks in the campus should receive antibiotics “without delay”.

In a statement, the university said: “The safety of our students and staff remains our highest priority.

“We are working closely with public health teams and are in touch with staff and students to ensure they get the advice and support they need.”

The BBC understands the outbreak is thought to be linked to a social event in Canterbury, which some of those who fell ill attended.

Specialists at the UKHSA are interviewing those affected to identify close contacts, a spokesperson said.

Symptoms of meningitis include a high fever, being sick and a severe and worsening headache, but can also cause life-threatening sepsis.

Other characteristic symptoms include a rash which does not fade when a glass is rolled over it.

Trish Mannes, UKHSA regional deputy director for the South East, said students can be at risk of missing symptoms due to being “easily confused with other illnesses such as a bad cold, flu or even a hangover”.

She added: “Students and staff will understandably be feeling worried about the risk of further cases; however, we would like to reassure them that close contacts of cases have been given antibiotics as a precautionary measure.”

Anyone becoming unwell with symptoms of meningitis and septicaemia is urged to go to their closest A&E department or call 999.

Meningitis can affect anyone but is most common in babies, young children, teenagers and young adults.

Dr Tom Nutt, chief executive of Meningitis Now, said: “Meningitis can progress very quickly and its impact is devastating, particularly for young people and their loved ones.

“University students and young adults are among the groups at increased risk because meningitis bacteria can spread more easily in settings where people live, study and socialise closely together.

“We urge students, staff and families to remain vigilant for the signs and symptoms of meningitis.”

There are numerous strains of the meningococcal infection.

Canterbury MP Rosie Duffield said in a statement on X that the deaths were “really tragic” and she was “thinking very much” of those close to them.

The wife of the Venerable Ope Oredein, Professor Afolakemi Oredein, has emphasized the importance of mothers behaving wisely in all their undertakings.

She delivered the message during a sermon at St. Anne’s Church, Molete, Ibadan, on the occasion of the 2026 Mothering Sunday celebration.

Professor Oredein noted that with the end times near, only mothers who act wisely would prevail.

She added that women who fail to exercise wisdom would struggle to raise godly children.

Highlighting the role of spiritual insight, she urged mothers to understand God’s will in their lives as a key to upholding their homes.

She also advised cultivating a positive mindset in all dealings.

Mothering Sunday, which originated in the Western Church, particularly in England during the Middle Ages, grew out of liturgical practices.

Celebrated on the fourth Sunday in Lent, it was traditionally a day for relaxation during the Lenten period.

The name “Mothering Sunday” comes from the custom of servants, apprentices, and young workers traveling long distances to attend services at their “mother” churches.

The service featured fathers presenting gifts to mothers and mothers leading the proceedings.

Before devoting herself fully to music ministry, Soetan trained and worked as a teacher, first for 16 years at Oritamefa Baptist School, Total Garden, Ibadan.

She later became co-proprietress of Pathfinder College, a school founded by her husband.

Her passion for music, however, found expression in church choirs and worship gatherings, where her distinctive voice and ministry began attracting wider attention.

As invitations to minister at Christian programmes and revivals increased, she gradually transitioned from teaching into full-time gospel music ministry.

Marriage and Family Life

Toun Soetan was married to Titus Soetan for over 40 years, who supported her ministry and educational initiatives.

Their partnership extended beyond family life into ministry and education.

Friends and colleagues often described their marriage as one built on faith, mutual respect, and dedication to service.

Despite her public ministry, she maintained a relatively private family life.

Rise in Gospel Music

Mama Soetan gained recognition through recordings and worship ministrations that resonated with churches across Nigeria.

Some of her widely known songs, Iye Re,” “Ke Pe Jesu” and “darling Jesus,” became a popular chorus in Christian worship gatherings.

She later founded Trinity World Evangelical Ministries and established the Trinity School of Worship (TRISOW) in Bodija, Ibadan, where she trained aspiring gospel singers and worship leaders.

Contemporaries in Gospel Music

Evangelist Soetan belonged to a generation of gospel ministers who helped shape the Nigerian gospel music landscape from the late 1970s through the 1990s.

Her contemporaries included notable gospel figures such as Dr Bola Are, Panam Percy Paul, Evangelist Dupe Olulana and Dr Funmi Aragbaye.

Together, they contributed significantly to the growth of gospel music in Nigeria, blending scripture-based lyrics with indigenous musical styles that resonated deeply with Christian audiences.

Ministry and Mentorship

Beyond her music recordings, Evangelist Soetan was widely respected for mentoring younger gospel artists and church music ministers.

Through TRISOW and her ministry platforms, she raised and trained several worship leaders.

She consistently emphasised that gospel music should remain a spiritual calling centred on worship, discipleship and evangelism rather than purely commercial pursuits.

Legacy

For many in the Nigerian Christian community, Evangelist Soetan was regarded as a trailblazer whose songs and teachings helped shape worship culture in churches across the country.

Her death at 73 marks the passing of a revered gospel minister, but her songs, teachings and the many lives she mentored continue to testify to her enduring legacy.

Tributes have continued to pour in following the death of Nigerian gospel music icon, Evangelist Toun Soetan, who died on Friday at the age of 73.

Clerics and gospel ministers who knew her described her as a trailblazer whose life and ministry left a lasting impact on worship and gospel music in Nigeria.

The Presiding Pastor of A-Plus Church, Sunday Ayilara, said the late singer’s legacy would continue to inspire generations of worshippers.

“Undisputably, you blazed the gospel music trail, raised worshippers and the worship standard! Your life, voice, impact and legacy are too authentic, effective, extensive and eternal! They will forever speak the glory of Christ till eternity.”

Similarly, the Senior Pastor of His Pavilion Christian Centre, Debbie Dahunsi, described Evangelist Soetan as a spiritual mother and mentor whose humility, courage and generosity touched many lives.

Pastor Dahunsi recalled first meeting the late gospel singer at her music school, TRISOW, in Bodija, Ibadan, where their relationship later developed into a close ministerial partnership.

Also reacting, the Senior Pastor of Vantage Church, Ibadan, Reverend Yinka Adeleke said Evangelist Soetan’s life was a blessing, and her memory would remain cherished.

According to him, her footprints would “forever remain on the sands of time and the precious places of our hearts,” adding that “the memory of the righteous is blessed.”

Evangelist Toun Soetan was widely regarded as one of the pioneers of contemporary gospel music in southwestern Nigeria, mentoring several gospel ministers and establishing a music training platform that nurtured many young talents.

The United States Department of Defense has released the names of six crew members killed when a US military refuelling aircraft crashed in Iraq.

According to the Pentagon, the airmen aboard the Boeing KC-135 Stratotanker were John Klinner, 33, from Alabama; Ariana Savino, 31, from Washington; Ashley Pruitt, 34, from Kentucky; Seth Koval, 38, from Indiana; Curtis Angst, 30, from Ohio; and Tyler Simmons, 28, also from Ohio.

The Pentagon said Klinner, Savino and Pruitt served in the United States Air Force, while Koval, Angst and Simmons were members of the US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth.

Military officials had earlier stated that the aircraft went down in western Iraq on Thursday and that the crash was not caused by either hostile action or friendly fire.

The aircraft was conducting a combat mission as part of ongoing US operations against Iran.

It was one of two planes involved in the mission, while the second aircraft landed safely.

US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth described the fallen crew members as “American heroes.”

At least 62 people have died in Kenya over the past week after heavy rains triggered widespread flooding across the country.

Authorities say the latest figure marks an increase from the previous death toll of 42 reported a week earlier.

Emergency responders carried out several rescue operations overnight in the capital, Nairobi.

According to the Kenya Red Cross, 11 passengers were rescued after a minibus taxi, locally known as a matatu, became trapped in rising floodwaters, while two children were also saved from a flooded house.

The heavy rainfall has caused flash floods in several parts of the country, with rivers bursting their banks and inundating homes, roads, and electricity and water infrastructure.

Kenya Interior Ministry warned that many regions are still experiencing heavy rains, raising the risk of further flooding.

Authorities have urged residents in low-lying areas to relocate to safer ground, while more than 2,000 people have already been displaced and are seeking temporary shelter.

Police say search and rescue operations are ongoing following what they described as “torrential rain and subsequent devastating flooding” affecting various parts of the country.

More than half of the fatalities — 33 — have been recorded in Nairobi, where poor drainage systems and blocked waterways caused by unregulated development have worsened the flooding.

President William Ruto said emergency food supplies and medical assistance were being delivered to affected communities, while authorities were also working to clear blocked drainage systems.

The flooding has also affected neighbouring Ethiopia, where more than 100 people have died following floods and landslides in the southern part of the country.

Experts say climate change is increasing the likelihood of extreme rainfall events.

Global temperatures have already risen by about 1.1°C since the industrial era, and scientists warn that temperatures will continue to climb unless countries significantly cut greenhouse gas emissions.
