FRCN DG Thumbs up Tetfund, UI for Innovative Baby Food Project

Tertiary institutions have been challenged to come up with research proposals on innovations that would reduce the burden of poverty in Nigeria

Speakers at the experiment of Nutri-Active baby food, locally produced through a Tetfund research grant at the University of Ibadan threw the challenge in their various speeches at the event.

The Tetfund principal investigator of the intervention project, Professor Kuta Yahaya, said the initiative aimed to reduce malnutrition, poverty and child mortality in Nigeria. 

Professor Yahaya noted that with the introduction of NutriActive Baby food, mothers can now feed their babies wholesome and nutritious food without breaking the bank on imported foods.

The Director General of Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria, FRCN, Dr. Mohammed Bulama, in a keynote address, said the intervention project was apt in tackling the escalating cost of children’s upbringing, noting that the early years of life were pivotal in shaping the health, growth and development of the Nigerian child.

Represented by the Zonal Director, Radio Nigeria, Ibadan Zonal Station, Mr. Dominic Mokikan, Dr. Bulama urged adults to eat right to prolong their life expectancy.

Our correspondent, Dayo Adu reports that the Nutriactive baby food is a complementary food for infants, an intervention project of the research team from the Department of Agricultural Extension and Rural Development, University of Ibadan.

The baby food is formulated through the combination of plant-based local grains with 23 nutrients capable of enhancing the rapid development of babies from six to twenty-four months displayed in different combinations of rice, soya beans, orange, fresh potato, banana and dates with no preservatives and additives.

The infants accepted the food, prepared and tested on babies by their mothers at the maternity unit of the University of Ibadan Health Services.

Two mothers, who relayed their experiences while feeding their babies with the food, lauded the initiative by the University’s research team.

Earlier in his speech, while unveiling the Nutriactive baby food, the Vice Chancellor, of the University of Ibadan, Professor Kayode Adebowale, represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, of Administration, Professor Peter Olapegba stated that the university was focusing its research on solving national multi-sectoral problems, calling on the government to invest in the mass production of the baby food for local consumption and export purposes.

Ogun Seals Six Private Health Facilities over Infractions

Six private health facilities have been sealed in Ogun State for various infractions against specified government regulations of medical practice in the State.

The 4 hospitals and 2 medical laboratories were sanctioned for offences, ranging from lack of registration to employment of unqualified personnel, operation beyond the scope of registration and negligence

The State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Tomi Coker told journalists after the enforcement exercise that the aim was to safeguard the lives of residents and prevent the proliferation of quacks from putting the health reforms of the state in jeopardy. 

The Commissioner explained that a special task force on enforcement recently inaugurated by the State had earlier effected the sealing of 10 private medical facilities in the Ado-Odo/Ota Local Government Area through an approach tagged “Operation Stingray”,

Dr Coker listed the newly affected affected facilities to include Ololade Clinic and Maternity Home, Iyana Ilogbo, Mercygate Hospital, Itele, Fehintola Clinic and Maternity Home, Ijako, Ayomide Outpatient Hospital, Itele, Diurnal Medical Laboratory, Itele, and Blizz Medical Laboratory, Abeokuta.

The Commissioner pleaded that the government alone could not win the war against quackery and illegal operation of medical facilities, urging the residents to report those behind such acts to relevant government agencies

Adeleke Calls for Joint Efforts in Tackling Quackery

Osun State Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke has urged medical professionals to support and collaborate with the government in ending the menace of quackery within the medical practice.

Governor Adeleke made the call at the opening ceremony of the National Executive Council meeting of the National Association of Government General Medical and Dental Practitioners, NAGMDP, in Osogbo, Osun State. 

The Governor, represented at the event by his Special Adviser on Public Health, Dr. Akindele Adekunle outlined the responsibilities on the shoulders of doctors in the society, noting that any half-baked professionals or quacks should not be encouraged within the profession. 

He maintained that as professionals backed by laws and ethics, medical professionals have the responsibilities to save lives even with surgical knives in the theatre.

He noted that more often the irreparable damages done to the body of victims of quacks are forced on the qualified medical professionals for repair which calls for collaboration to end quackery in the profession.

The Governor urged the council, on behalf of our people and as patients would always beckon on their physicians, to do everything within their professional reach to combat the menace of quackery in the system. 

Governor Adeleke appreciated members of the association for the support his administration has enjoyed in offering their services during the Imole Free Medical Outreach his administration has embarked upon in giving life to people of the state that may be distressed with one ailment or the other.

Maternal Mortality: Ibidero Comes to the Rescue

Fifteen thousand Pregnant women are to benefit from the Ogun State government free delivery programme tagged “Ibidero” as part of measures put in place to improve the state’s maternal mortality index. 

Commissioner for Health, Dr. Tomi Coker disclosed this in Abeokuta, the state capital, while speaking to newsmen on the new scheme.

Dr Coker noted that the initiative was a health insurance scheme targeted at vulnerable indigent pregnant women across the 20 local government areas of the state.

She noted that through the programme, the enrolled expectant mothers would have access to free maternal health services at their assigned health centres, which would reduce the risk of complications during or after pregnancy.

The Commissioner added that “Ibidero” was designed to include a conditional cash transfer whereby the pregnant women captured on the programme get a stipend after delivering their babies at their assigned health facility. 

She however reiterated the present administration’s commitment to providing affordable, qualitative, and accessible healthcare for all.

Include persons living with disabilities in policy making – Professor Osisanya

Government at all levels have been urged to include persons living with disabilities, PLWDs, in policy making in the country.

A lecturer at the Department of Special Education University Of Ibadan, Professor Ayo Osisanya, made the call at a seminar organized by the Down Syndrome Foundation Nigeria held at Western Hall, Agodi Secretariat, Ibadan.

Speaking on the theme, “Embrace Inclusion -Transform Lives”, for the Down Syndrome Awareness Month, Professor Osisanya explained that individuals with special needs needed to be given rehabilitation and education for them to become self dependent in future and not to be a burden to their parents and care givers.

Chairman, Community Chest Council, Oyo State, Dr Olusola Olaganju who said disability should not be seen as a death sentence, urged government to give regard to people with disability for them to contribute to the gross domestic product Of the country.

Also, a Consultant Paediatric Endocrinologist at the University College Hospital, Ibadan, Dr Oluwakemi Ashubu advised parents of children living with down syndrome to always bring them to the hospital for routine health checks as part of efforts to keep them healthy, saying such children should not be labelled as outcasts.

In a goodwill message, the Chief Medical Director, University College Hospital, Professor Jessie Otegbayo represented by Head Of Department Of Paediatrics, Dr Adanze Asinqbi appreciated the president and management of the Down Syndrome Foundation, Nigeria for their impact over the years in the service of humanity, in advocacy and inclusion, Professor Otegbayo encouraged parents to enrol their children in the National Health Insurance Scheme, NHIS, to help them get proper medication and treatments for several diseases.

A parent of a child living with Down Syndrome, Dr Princess Nwakwo, who noted that such children were gifts from God that should be loved and embraced, enjoined parents not to discriminate and withhold education from them to also have potentials.

Earlier in an address of welcome, the president of the Down Syndrome Foundation Nigeria , Mrs Rose Mordi explained that the aim of the seminar was to create awareness on Down Syndrome and to advocate for total inclusion of children living with the disease and the change of mind-set of people from the misconceptions, ignorance and superstitions regarding disability.

The event had in attendance, children living with Down syndrome, students from the University Of Ibadan, parents and caregivers.

FG Approves Strategies for Enhanced Healthcare Delivery

The Federal Government has approved the implementation of sector-wide strategies aimed at enhancing the healthcare systems across the country.

The Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Ali Pate, who announced this in Ado Ekiti at the 64th National Council on Health with the theme: “Building a Resilient and Inclusive Healthcare System for a Healthy Nigeria,” highlighted President Bola Tinubu’s efforts to transform the health sector. 

He said the President’s commitment has paved the way for opportunities and established essential structures for effectively coordinating endeavours to address broader health determinants.

Professor Pate emphasized the imperative to tackle health sector deficits, prompting key figures such as state governors, commissioners, and development partners to discuss strategic measures to reshape Nigeria’s healthcare delivery system.

The Minister underscored the complexity of the healthcare ecosystem, stressing the need for innovation and coordination across the spectrum so as to foster an environment where healthcare providers collaborate to share resources, data, and knowledge.

He also stressed the necessity for governments at all levels to formulate and enforce policies prioritizing health and well-being, adding that there is the need for inclusion of both public and private sectors to ensure effective service delivery.

In his contributions, the Minister of State for Health, Dr. Adetunji Alausa, urged states to build on Federal efforts by allocating more funds to the sector to facilitate the collective achievement of the Universal Health Coverage scheme.

Ekiti State Governor, Mr. Biodun Oyebanji, called on stakeholders to deliver a robust, resilient, and inclusive healthcare system that would guarantee adequate access to quality health services without financial constraints for every citizen.

The Ekiti State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Oyebanji Filani, on his part emphasized the significance of the 64th National Council on Health and highlighted various achievements by the state government in the health sector.

NGO Organises Charity Walk to Raise Awareness on Down Syndrome

President of a nongovernmental organization, Down Syndrome Foundation of Nigeria, Mrs Rose Mordi has called for empowerment of people with Down Syndrome and other forms of intellectual disabilities.

Mrs Mordi stated this during a charity walk organised by the NGO in Ibadan, Oyo state.

She said the charity walk became necessary to raise awareness about the challenges of people with Down Syndrome, maintaining that there is ability in disability.

Head of Educational and Social Services, Down Syndrome Foundation of Nigeria, Mr Sunday Ojo advocated government partnership in their various programmes for people with disability

The Executive Assistant to Oyo State Governor on disabilities matters, Mr Timothy Olufemi,who was part of the event, explained that the present administration in the state remained committed to the welfare of people with disabilities.

Radio Nigeria reports that during the charity walk, people with Down Syndrome carried placards with inscriptions such as save a life, embrace inclusion, persons with disabilities are not liabilities.

Cholera: Ogun Ready for Showdown with Erring Table, Sachet Water Producers

Ogun state government is to conduct compliance exercise on all table and sachet water factories in the state as part of measures to ascertain the causes of the recent cholera outbreak and to forestall re-occurrence.

Commissioner for Environment, Mr Ola Oresanya made the announcement during a stakeholders meeting in Abeokuta.

Mr Oresanya said the compliance exercise became necessary to address the environmental and hygienic negligence detected in the production processes which was in variance to their earlier certification by the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC.

The Commissioner noted that the compliance exercise was meant to reinforce and domesticate NAFDAC certification in all the twenty local government areas of the state, as the team would move to all water producing factories for on the spot assessment of their production processes. 

He called on the sachet water producers to support the compliance exercise as the state government was not out to witch hunt anyone, but safeguard the health of the residents from preventable water borne diseases as well set a healthy standard .

Responding, the Chairman of the Table Water And Beverages Producers Association of Nigeria, Ogun State Chapter, Mr Femi Olukoga pledged his members’ support for the exercise.

Ogun Residents Solicit FG’s Support on Primary Healthcare Centre

Residents of a community in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital have solicited the federal government’s intervention to activate an abandoned primary healthcare centre which has become a subject of controversy between the contractor and local government authorities. 

The residents who spoke with Radio Nigeria lamented that the contractor handling the project had abandoned the site for the past 11 years, only to show up recently with a consignment of supply to the facility and asking the council authorities to take responsibility for the delivery. 

The recent delivery of medical equipment which ought to elicit joy among the residents turned out to be a source of concern to the people due to the circumstances surrounding the project. 

The abandoned multimillion naira primary health care centre, located at the Olomore Federal Housing Estate in Abeokuta North local government area of Ogun State was said to have been abandoned since 2012. 

Some of the residents who spoke with Radio Nigeria said it was a sheer waste of public resources that the facility, attractively structured with hospital wards, offices and quarters for resident doctors had been neglected for so long at the detriment of the residents. 

They complained that the project which was overtaken by thick bushes was renovated in 2021 but was abandoned again before the sudden arrival of the truck conveying a consignment of medical equipment to be deposited at the abandoned site. 

In a reaction, the Public Relations Officer, of Abeokuta North Community Development Council, Mr Kabir Ayoola who said the abandoned structure was discovered to have been vandalized several times while the contractor was nowhere to be found also complained that much of the equipment being supplied was obsolete. 

Also, a community leader, Mr Ademola Oladosu said people of the area were in great need of a functional hospital, hence the need for the relevant authorities to rise to the challenge of ensuring prompt completion of the project. 

Representative of the contractor handling the project Mr Ayodele Adeyinka, who lamented that some fittings, including the cables earlier installed at the health centre, had gone missing called for measures to keep the new batch of equipment safe. 

Responding, the Chairman Abeokuta North Local government, Prince Samson Ayorinde who accused the contractor of handling the project with levity, said the local government had made arrangements with the state-owned security outfits, the So Safe Corps and Amotekun to deploy their personnel to the centre. 

The Stakeholders later took the inventory of the items supplied to the abandoned health centre, including an industrial generator, hospital beds, stretchers, wheelchairs, furniture and other medical essentials.

HPV Vaccine is Safe – Minister

Consequent upon the rumour making rounds that some vaccines are killing people, the Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare, Dr Tunji Alausa, has given Nigerians assurance that the Human PapillomaVirus, HPV vaccine, aimed at preventing cervical cancer is safe.

Dr Alausa gave the assurance while speaking with newsmen after a courtesy call on Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, at the Lagos House, Marina, on Wednesday.

“HPV vaccine is 100 per cent safe,” the minister said, adding, “This is a vaccine that has been in existence for about 18 years now, and Nigeria is late to adopt this vaccine.”

He noted that Nigeria had about 8,000 women “dying from cervical cancer” today, stressing that “this vaccine will prevent cervical cancer by 95 per cent.”

He appealed that girls between the ages of 9 and 15 years should be encouraged to take the vaccine, adding that some countries are already administering the vaccine to women up to 45 years old.

“It is a safe vaccine. We should encourage all our young girls between the ages of nine and 15 years to get this vaccine. In fact, in other parts of the world, the HPV vaccine has been expanded to be administered to women as old as 45 years.

“It saves lives, it prevents cancer. This is one of the preventive things we could do to help our healthcare system,” he said.

Alausa added, “So, let me emphatically say it again: HPV vaccine, the Human PapillomaVirus vaccine is 100 per cent safe. I’m a physician. I’m a father. I have a daughter and she got the vaccine when she was 13 years old and that was about 13 years ago.

“So, I’m putting my mouth where my money is; HPV vaccine is safe. Please, discount any ignorant, uneducated social media information you get. HPV vaccine is safe.”

The Human Papilloma Virus, HPV Vaccine, was rolled out IN Abuja on Tuesday by the wife of the President, Senator Oluremi Tinubu.

Meanwhile, schoolgirls aged 9 to 14 years on Thursday received the Human Papillomavirus vaccine at the Junior Secondary School, Asokoro, Abuja.

The vaccination targets over seven million girls, which is the largest number in a single round of HPV vaccination in the African region.

The  girls aged 9 to 14 years will receive a single dose of the vaccine, which prevents HPV types 16 and 18, known to cause at least 70 per cent of cervical cancers.

Hundreds of Fiditi Residents Benefit from NMA Free Medical Outreach

Over One hundred residents of Fiditi and its environs have benefited from a free Medical Outreach Organized by Nigerian Medical Association of Nigeria, NMA, Oyo State Chapter.


The  outreach, which was held at Bethel  American International School Clinic, Fiditi, as part of activities to Mark 2023 NMA Physician Week included Blood Pressure, Blood Glucose, Ear , Dentistry and eye test.

Chairman, OYO NMA, Dr Wale Lasisi who led the team of medical personnel, said the Association undertook the exercise to give back to the society.

In an interview with Radio Nigeria, Vice Chairman Of the Association, Dr Olufemi Aworinde said the aim of free medical outreach was to ease hardship of people in the community who do not have access to  medication by giving them treatment noted that Health is Weath.

A member of the Association, Dr Olugbenga Akintunde, in a health talk, advised the beneficiaries, most of whom were elderly, to avoid high intake of salt, cholesterol, sugar content, which are risk factors for diseases including diabetes and hypertension.


Dr Akintunde implored them to always consume vegetables, fresh fruits and ensure they go for regular medical checkup.

Some of the beneficiaries appreciated Nigerian Medical Association Oyo State Chapter for the free medical test, and called on other Associations to emulate the Association gesture.

The Principal of Bethel American International School, Fiditi Oyo town, Mrs Funmi Omoseyimi Commended NMA Oyo State Chapter for adopting the School to Facilitate the Free Medical Outreach.

NMA Urges Govt to Employ 600L Med Students, Pay CONMESS, CONHESS

Nigerian Medical Association, NMA, Oyo State Chapter Chairman, Dr Wale Lasisi has advised Federal Government to consider employing 600 Level medical students that will be paid stipends to address brain drain in the country. 

Dr Lasisi stated this while speaking to newsmen as parts of activities marking Physician Week in the State.

He explained that the stipends would be a form of bond that would not allow medical students to relocate abroad for a period of time instead of giving liberty to hospitals to employ the services of retired medical doctors to Bridge the syndrome of travelling massively.

He expressed reservation on the widely reported cases of organ harvesting in the country, called for more investigation on the practice in the country.

The NMA 2023 Physician Week activities include opening ceremony, free medical outreach and physician heal thyself.

In a related development, NMA has called on government to immediately commence the payment of the recently CONMESS and CONHESS salary structures with arrears to medical workers.

President of NMA, Dr Uche Ojinmah made the call at a news Conference organised to commence the 2023 physicians week held at NMA House, Total Garden, Ibadan.

The NMA President whose message was read by Chairman, NMA , Oyo State Chapter, Dr. Wale Lasisibsaid the call became imperative to ensure non interference of health care delivery appealed to Oyo State Government to approve and immediately implement the upward review of hazard allowances for State Doctors and other health care workers in the State as applicable in most states.

Dr. Ojinmah expressed dissatisfaction over the Persistent attempt by certain individuals especially as it relates to board licensing of foreign trained medical graduates, calling on National Assembly to resist being used under any guise to compromise the quality of health care delivery in Nigeria.

The NMA President implored Doctors to always take care of their health in other to deliver care of the highest standard to patients and be more patient with their patients saying Nigerians are passing through trying times.

Two Hospitals Sealed in Oyo over Quackery, Illegalities

Oyo State Government has sealed two private hospitals in Oyo town over quackery and other illegalities.

The hospitals sealed by the State Hospital Monitoring Task Force were Wise and Pearl Hospital Limited, Akeetan-Tuntun and Living Stone Clinic and Maternity, Idi-Ose, Alaafin High School, Oyo.

The Coordinator of the Task Force, Dr. Wale Falana, while speaking shortly after the exercise, said the move was part of the efforts of the Oyo state government to get rid of quackery and other atrocities done by some individuals in the health sector.

Dr. Falana, who is also the Director of Secondary Health Care, Ministry of Health, revealed that the government will continue to wage war against all forms of illegalities in private hospitals and clinics to ensure residents have access to quality health care. 

He explained that Governor Seyi Makinde-led administration is passionate about the well-being of every individual; hence, there is a need for private health facilities to comply with best practices and abide by the rules laid down by the Oyo state government.

Dr. Falana warned proprietors of health facilities in the state that are yet to get approval from the government to do what is necessary without further delay or face sanction.

He expressed displeasure over irregularities in the conduct of the concerned hospitals, noting that patients under their care were at high risk. 

Dr. Falana urged residents of the state to be mindful and conscious of the health facilities they patronize for treatment to prevent unforeseen circumstances.

His words, “Quackery is a serious issue. These people are doing surgeries, some are even in training, have accommodation for trainees, and you can see the owner of one of the places visited ran away. “

“This monitoring is part of efforts Ministry of Health and the government to get rid of quackery, we are going to continue, and it will be regularly.”

“The present administration is trying to correct the wrongs perpetrated by some people. Therefore, we appeal to medical practitioners to put their licences in their facilities. “

“Residents are also advised to ask for annual practising licenses collected from the government by health facilities, if they are to go to private clinics or hospitals for treatment”.

“Residents can key into the Oyo State Health Insurance Scheme, it doesn’t cost much and it is safe.”

“There is a normal standard for the opening of hospitals, they can come to the ministry of health for enquiries on this, but we don’t have room for quackery practices in Oyo state”, he added.

The hospital monitoring team found two other private hospitals worthwhile, while the remaining two out of the six health facilities visited during the tour were advised to work on identified issues within the shortest possible time.

Cholera : Ogun Govt. Takes Step on Outbreak

Ogun state government has commenced chlorinating wells in some parts of the state following the recent outbreak of cholera in Ijebu-North and Abeokuta North Local Government areas of the state.

The Commissioner for Health, Dr. Tomi Coker, who made this known during a stakeholders’ meeting in Abeokuta, explained that the step was to curtail the spread of disease.

Dr Coker disclosed that 217 cases of the disease were recorded in Ijebu-North LGA, with a few cases reported in Abeokuta North last week, pointing out that two cases of cholera were also recorded in Abeokuta South council area. 

Attributing the cause of the outbreak to open defecation, poor waste management, and inadequate water sources in the affected local government areas, the health commissioner identified adoption of s multi-sectoral strategy as key to eliminating cholera.

Dr Coker advised residents of the State to avoid open defecation, construct affordable toilets and sanitary wells in their homes, and warned that the government might seal houses without toilets in the interest of public health.

She noted that Ministry of Health was working  with the Ministry of Environment and other relevant Ministries, Departments, and Agencies to contain the spread of the disease, adding that officials from the State Public Health Department would continue to educate residents on essential hygiene practices to prevent cholera.

We Remain committed to improving healthcare system – Osun Speaker

The Speaker of Osun State House of Assembly, OSHA, Prince Adewale Egbedun has pledged the commitment of the Assembly to improve the healthcare system of the state. 

Prince Egbedun gave the assurance while receiving the Advocacy and Sensitization Team for Human Papillomavirus Vaccine, HPV, in his office at the Assembly Complex, Osogbo.

The team was led by the Director of Medical Service and Disease Control of the State Primary Healthcare Board, Doctor Oluyemi Ogundun.

In her remarks, Doctor Ogundun said the team came to the House of Assembly to solicit for their support as representatives of the people across the state towards embracing the HPV vaccination exercise aimed to protect girls aged 9-14 years against cervical cancer, slated to commence on 24th of this month in communities, schools and health facilities.

Also, in the course of the sensitization lecture, the State Health Promotion Officer of Osun State Primary Health Care Board, Mrs. Adeniyi Taiwo said the Humanpapilloma virus can infect many parts of the body of both men and women.

In his response, the Speaker of the House, Prince Adewale Egbedun who appreciated the team for their commitment towards eradicating cervical cancer in the State expressed the readiness of the Assembly to champion the campaign for the vaccine, its advocacy and vaccination exercise.

The sensitisation lecture, which took place at the Parliamentary Hall of the House of Assembly, had the principal officers and other members in attendance.

Also in the advocacy and sensitisation team are Mr. Solomon Israel Olakanmi (UNICEF VSL for Osun State), Mr Olantunji A. Ogunsemide (Clinton Health Access Initiative TA on HPVVI in Osun State), Mrs. Adeleke Rebecca Odunola (NPHCDA Osun State Coordinator) and Mrs. Grace Omolola Adeniyi (UNICEF Adolescent Health HPVV Consultant).

Doctors Highlight Threats of Early Marriage for Girl Child

Early marriage is inimical to the overall well-being of the girl-child, hence the unwholesome practice must be stopped.

Medical Women Association of Nigeria, MWAN Oyo State  Chapter, expressed this displeasure at a sensitization programme held at Peoples’ Girls Grammar School, Molete Ibadan in Commemoration  of International  Day of the Girl Child

In a presentation entitled ‘Dangers of Early Child Marriage’, President of MWAN, Dr Oyindamola Adeyemi, described the girl child as a nation builder, pointing out that early marriage could occur as a result of unwanted pregnancy, which could affect the education, depression and mental illness to the child.

Dr Adeyemi enjoined the girl-child to see themselves as talented, urging them to avoid other acts that could disrupt their education.

In a presentation on Menstrual Disorder, the General Secretary of the association, Dr Simibiat Oseghe, said Mensural disorder in girl-child is curable, advising them to visit medical facilities and not to allow Male gender to abuse them sexually as a belief that it cures the menstrual disorder

Also, a Pediatrician, Dr Amarachi Bayo said the girl child has a promising future cautioning them to desist from unwanted pregnancy.

Some of the students at the event appreciated MWAN, Oyo State Chapter for the sensitization and promised to work hard in their education pursuit.

The high point of the event was the cultural dance, quiz and presentation of gifts.

Experts Advise Against Stigmatising People with Mental Health Issues

The founder Of a Non-Governmental Organisation, Asido Foundation, Dr Jibril Abdul Malik says people should stop discriminating, neglecting and Stigmatizing people with mental illness.


Dr Abdul Malik made the call during a street sensitization campaign Organized by the Asido Foundation held at the University of Ibadan’s first gate.

Dr Abdul Malik who is an Associate professor at the Department of Psychiatry, University Of Ibadan decried the rate at which people with mental illness suffer bullying, physical abuse, sexual abuse and roam the street in society noting that the illness could be curable and not supernatural as belief.

“ In some cases, supernatural beliefs lead individuals to seek traditional or faith-based healing, and they may end in a situation where they experience physical abuse starvation and sexual abuse”

Dr Abdul Malik said Mental Health was a Universal Health right regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, religion and socioeconomic status which should not be denied.

 “many are deprived of their liberties, withdrawn from school, lose their jobs, marriages or assets and are denied opportunities to actualize their potentials”

“Mental illness could happen to anyone and Dementia could occur when they grow old he said Dr AbdulMalik said Asido Foundation,  a non-profit Organization was dedicated to improving mental health and had impacted positively in lives of some persons with mental illness for them to be productive in the society, urged all stakeholders to collaborate with governments in reshaping the narrative around mental health.

“I want to call on the media, educational institutions, religious leaders, community figures, and more, to join hands to sensitize the public “he added.

The Founder Of Asido Foundation appealed to employers of labour not to Stigmatize people who were cured of mental illness, but to encourage and support them.


On her part, President Medical Women Association Of Nigeria Oyo State Chapter, Dr Oyindamola Adeyemi, enjoined mothers to be with their children, mentor and interact with them to enable them to speak up to address cases of bullying, harassment, depression and sexual abuse.

“as a mother we need to play a major role, be a model and  a mentor to our  children we need to be very close to them from when they are babies, let them be our friends, they will tell us what happened, you know mental health starts from schools when they are been bully or a teacher is terrorizing them and can’t say and they become depressed as well, when you pick them at school right in the car you should interact or at home with them, ask them what happens in school and as the child grow up he or she becomes confident  “

Mental Health Coordinator, Oyo State Primary Health Care Board, Mrs Funmilayo Abodunrin who said tackling mental illness should be a collective effort by all, advised people to visit health centres for diagnosis and medications.

“the economic situation could lead to depression when they can’t make ends meet “.
“People should help those that have mental health issues people should speak out  when they detect any signs and avoid committing suicide “

Ogun Set to Vaccinate Girls Against HPV

Ogun State Government, through the State Primary Healthcare Development Board, has announced plans to vaccinate more than five hundred thousand girls in the State against the Human Papilloma Virus, HPV.

The Executive Secretary of the board, Dr Elijah Ogunsola who stated this at a media parley in Abeokuta said those to be covered were girls between the ages of nine and fourteen years

Dr Ogunsola who explained that the Human Papilloma Virus remained one of the major causes of cervical cancer among women, with twelve thousand and seventy-five new cases recorded in Nigeria, urged the people to embrace the vaccine, with a view to checking the spread of the virus.

The Executive Secretary of the State Primary Healthcare Development Board said the 5-day campaign for the vaccine would commence on Tuesday 24th  October, 2023 and would be available in all State-owned facilities, public and private schools, religious houses and marketplaces among others.

He pointed out that the vaccine was targeted at young adults and pre-teens yet to be sexually active, expressing assurance that the move would serve as a preventive measure against cervical cancer.

Similarly, the State Coordinator, the National Primary Health Care Development Agency, Mrs Victoria Adebiyi affirmed that the vaccine remained safe, effective and free, contrary to the myths and rumours being peddled in some quarters.

She appealed to all stakeholders including, traditional rulers, parents, Religious groups and market women to encourage the acceptance of the vaccine among the people, especially in the rural areas.

FG Approves Appointment of Retired Medical Personnel as Contract Staff

The Federal Government has approved the appointment of doctors, nurses, and other clinical healthcare workers as contract staff after attaining their compulsory retirement age or years.

The government, however, said the appointed contract staff would be on the same salary scale level that they retired on if they desire and deserve it.

A circular obtained by newsmen, dated October 5, 2023, by the Federal Ministry of Health, directed the Chief Executive Agencies, Chief Medical Directors, Medical Directors, and Heads of Regulatory Bodies and Schools to ensure compliance with the circular earlier issued by the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation to all staff in their institutions.

The office of the OHCSF had in a circular dated August 30, 2023, rejected the upward review of the current retirement age of Medical/Dental Consultants and other health professionals from 60 to 70 and 75 respectively.

The circular titled ‘Re: Review of retirement age to 65 and 70 years for health professionals and medical/dental consultants,’ with reference number HCSF/SPSO/ODD/CND/100/S./145, was addressed to the Permanent Secretary of the FMoH.

The circular signed by the Permanent Secretary, Service Policies and Strategies Office, Olufemi Oloruntoba, for the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation read partly, “I am directed to refer to the above-mentioned memorandum presented at the 44th National Council on Establishment held from 5th-9th December 2022, in Yola, Adamawa State requesting a review of the current retirement age of Medical/Dental Consultants and other health professionals from 60 to 70 and 75 respectively.

“After careful consideration of the memorandum, the council rejected the request based on the following: Professionals in the health sector were leaving the country because of pecuniary consideration and unfavourable conditions of service and not as a result of retirement age.

Some State government had already increased the retirement age of medical doctors and other health workers and this has not addressed the spate of brain drain.”

It also said it was dissatisfied with health workers’ attitude to work, noting that in spite of efforts by the government to encourage health workers, the exodus of health workers had not abated.

“Council, however, approved that clinical health workers who have attained the compulsory retirement age/years may be given contract appointment on the same salary scale level that they retired on if desired and deserved.

“Government should engage the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria, and the Nigerian Medical Association to extract some level of commitment from medical doctors.

“To address the observed dissatisfaction with the attitude of health workers to work, there is a need to institutionalise an effective performance management system in the public service in order to improve the work ethics of the medical officers and consultant, and medical doctors should show more patriotism in the discharge of their duties and avoid holding the system to ransom,” it added.

Consequently, the FMoH in its circular urged all executives of agencies, Chief Medical Directors, Medical Directors, and Heads of Regulatory Bodies and Schools to ensure strict compliance with the directive from the OHCSF.

The circular signed by the Deputy of Appointment, Promotion and Discipline, Daloba Paul Edward for the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Ali Pate, was referenced C.4007/T.2/37.

Ekiti Residents Benefit from World Bank Malaria Project

Residents of Ekiti State will now have access to free anti-malaria drugs as the state government has distributed anti-malaria commodities to two hundred health facilities across the sixteen local government areas of the state.

Speaking at the flag-off of the programme, the state commissioner for Health and Human Services, Dr Oyebanji Filani noted that the distribution of the malaria commodities would help to reduce cases of malaria and would increase patients access to malaria drugs.

Represented by the Permanent Secretary, Mrs Olusola Igotun, the commissioner urged the benefitting health facilities to judiciously make use of the anti-malaria commodities, saying that the present administration would do everything to ensure that residents have access to quality health care services.

Also, the General Manager, Drugs Management Agency, Mr Michael Oyeniran said the drugs would be distributed to residents for free adding that anybody caught selling or hoarding it will be sanctioned accordingly.

In her speech, the Programme Manager, Mrs Helen Bankole noted that in 2019, Ekiti State was selected alongside five states which are Lagos, Abia, Borno, Imo, and Rivers to be funded by the World Bank on the Immunisation Plus and Malaria Progress by Accelerating Coverage and Transforming Services  Project.

She explained that the state promptly complied by setting aside a counterpart funds as part of the project’s requirements while members of the Program Implementation Unit were nominated and duly approved by the World Bank. 

According to her, the State Steering Committee for the project was inaugurated in 2021 with quarterly meetings held till date.

Mr Bankole noted that as part of the project’s implementation steps, a total of 5 Non-State Actors were shortlisted for Ekiti State and they all submitted their proposals to partner with the state in the provision and distribution of malaria commodities.

Following a transparent technical and financial evaluation of the proposals using a Quality-Cost Based Selection approach, Solina Health submission performed favourably over others and thus adjudged the preferred NSA to partner with Ekiti State.

The project manager said Ekiti is the first state on the World Bank-funded Malaria Project to have concluded the NSA-engagement and payment of mobilization fee culminating in the commodities distribution to 200 Health facilities that were selected based on their target population as specified by the project.

Immunization: Osun Targets over 1.5m Babies

Osun State Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke has flagged off the National Immunization Plus Days, NIPDs, programme for babies between ages of 0-59 months in Osogbo, with a charge to nursing mothers to take advantage of the programme to get their children vaccinated.

Governor Ademola Adeleke, who was represented by his deputy, Prince Kola Adewusi at the immunization flag-off, said Osun State has been leading in the previous campaign due to co-operation of parents and caregivers in the State.

The Governor disclosed that one million four hundred and ninety-nine thousand, seven hundred and thirty-four (1,499,734) were immunized in December, 2023, revealing that the target for September campaign is one million five hundred and thirty thousand, two hundred and ninety-five (1,530,295).

Governor Adeleke said that his administration has been supporting the Immunization activities through release of counterpart fund as well as monitoring and supervision of health care services across  the State.

While pointing out that no new case of Polio infection has been recorded in the last few years, the Governor however acknowledged that recent tests have however found traces of the virus in some stools sampled.

In his welcome address the Chairman Osun State Primary Health Care Development Board, Mr. Adisa Tajudeen appreciated the Governor for his commitment to the health and well-being of Osun people.

Mr. Adisa added that the importance of vaccination to children in the State can not be overstated as it has saved countless livers, thereby preventing disability and suffering in our society.

The exercise, aimed at giving two drops of the Novel Oval Polio Vaccine to children within age 0 to 59 months, irrespective of their previous immunization status, is scheduled to hold between 30th September and 2nd October, 2023.

National Immunization Plus Days Flagged Off in Ibadan

It is important for parents and guardians to cooperate with immunization officers as they embark on four day house to house vaccination against polio.

Commissioner for Health in Oyo state Dr Oluwaserimi Ajetunmobi stated this at the flag-off ceremony for the National Immunization Plus Days (NIPDs) campaign held at Ibadan South East Local Government  Primary Health Care Centre, Oranyan.

The Commissioner who was represented by the Permanent Secretary, the Ministry of Health, Mr Olusoji Adeyanju said without the cooperation of parents and caregivers, the aim which is to rid the state off polio, would not be achieved. 

In a remark, the Executive secretary Primary Health Care board, Dr Muyideen Olatunji said the introduction of vaccination in Nigeria has reduced the misconception of  “Abiku” in the society.

On her part, the Medical Officer, Oranyan Health Centre, Dr Dupe Akinyemi, urged mothers in attendance to utilize every immunization opportunity optimally, without discouraging others.

State Coordinator for World Health Organization WHO, Phillip Zonto said children from zero to five years were qualified for the vaccination, as the content of the vaccine have been approved for use.

Also speaking, the Maternal and Child Health Facilitator for United Nations International Children Emergency Fund, UNICEF, in Oyo state, Tari Akpandara said the immunization officers will also seen in the markets, schools and shops for thorough outreach.

The event also had in attendance religious leaders, Ibadan South East Local Government chairman, representative of the Christian Association of Nigeria among others.

Oyo Govt. Begins Anti-Rabies Vaccination Campaign

Oyo State Government has commenced an anti-rabies vaccination campaign to curb the menace of rabies in the state.

The State Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, Barrister Olasunkanmi Olaleye made this known on Friday, saying the campaign is in collaboration with the Nigerian Veterinary Medical Association, Oyo State Branch.

The Commissioner added that it is also part of activities marking the 2023 World Rabies Day in Ibadan.

According to Barrister Olaleye, the vaccination programme demonstrated the Oyo State Government’s resolve to eradicate rabies by increasing the availability and accessibility of anti-rabies vaccines in the state.

Barrister Olasunkanmi added that, it is important humans are protected from diseases that are transmissible from animals, as about 70 percent of infectious diseases affecting humans are of animal origin. 

“We have also improved our surveillance and reporting systems, to monitor anthrax and every zoonotic diseases, to evaluate the impact of our collective interventions,” he said

He however hinted that Oyo State would be ready to partner with any association or group to ensure people of the state are healthy.

In his address, the Chairman, Nigerian Veterinary Medical Association Oyo state branch, Dr. Moses Arokoyo commended the Oyo State Government for being proactive in fighting against zoonotic diseases adding that free anti-rabies vaccination of dogs was part of efforts to celebrate this year’s Wold Rabies Day.

In another development, the Honourable Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Architect Abdulmojeed Mogbonjubola, has engaged owners of companies and industrial facilities in the State over the State Government’s stance on absolute cleanliness and Environmental Law compliance.

Mogbonjubola met various owners of Agro-Allied and chemical industries, Construction companies, Food and Beverages industries, Quarries and other industrial facilities in the State on Thursday.

He called for adequate collaboration in sustaining the environment through healthy ways of evacuation of both solid, liquid or recircled and emitted wastes.

EKSG Suspends CMD over Alleged Gross Misconduct

The Ekiti State Government has suspended the Chief  Medical Director, CMD of State Specialist Hospital, Ikere-Ekiti, Dr Olaolu Olubiyi for alleged gross misconduct .

The State Ministry of Health and Human Services announced the suspension on a statement made available to newsmen in Ado-Ekiti.

According to the statement, Dr Olubiyi was suspended  by the State Hospitals Management Board  following the allegation of gross misconduct  reported against him which established the fact  that he violated Ekiti Public Service Rules.

The statement explains that the Suspended CMD has been prohibited from carrying out his official duties pending further investigation in line with the provisions of the State Public Service Rules 

It further directs him to hand over his duties as CMD of the State Specialist Hospital, Ikere to  Dr Akinsipe Catherine Iyabo with immediate effect .

While  stressing  the commitment of Government  to rewarding excellent performance, diligence  and dedication to duties , the statement however says Government will not look away when Government officials do not abide by the Code of Conduct for Public Officers.
