Ogun State governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun says his government will continue with its infrastructural drive, especially in the area of road construction as a catalyst for economic growth and development.
Governor Abiodun spoke at the commissioning of the six-kilometre (first phase) of the Siun-Owode-Ofada Road in the Obafemi Owode Local Government of the state.
Speaking at the event, which was attended by the Kwara State Governor, Alhaji Abdulrahman AbdulRasak, Governor Abiodun emphasized the importance of road construction in the overall development of the state.
The governor described the newly rehabilitated road as an alternative to the ever-busy Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, adding that it would also impact positively on the socio-economic development of communities along the road.
He said the construction of the road was a testimony to the dedication to strategic and methodical development of infrastructure across the state to enhance the socio-economic landscape as enshrined in the “Building our Future Together” agenda of his administration.
“The road represents a vital link between communities to boost local economies and connect all those coming from Abeokuta to Siun, Owode up to Mowe. This local government is where people work in Lagos but reside and commute daily”.
“The road is an alternative for people from Abeokuta to Lagos. It will significantly impact the socio-economy development of the state,” the governor noted.
He added that the road is the first to be commissioned this year, just as the Mowe-Ofada Road has been completed, adding that his administration would soon commission more roads including the Ilaro-Owode Road and the Gateway International Cargo Airport at Ilisan.

He spoke on why some road projects were delayed, blaming the development on the high price of construction materials.
He said: “We have had a slowdown on construction due to the situation of things in the country in the last few months which has not allowed for objective pricing of construction materials”.
“But for us, construction represents a lot. Besides the fact that road construction allows for the movement of goods, services, and people, the construction industry is the largest employer of labour. So, we will continue to prioritize construction.”
He called on the people to take ownership of the road and other infrastructure provided by the government by protecting them as they were commonwealth and taxes were used in providing them.
In a remark, the Kwara State governor, who is also the Chairman, Nigerian Governors’ Forum (NGF), Alhaji Abdulrahman Abdulrasak, praised Governor Abiodun for the infrastructural revolution going on in the state.

He commended the efficient management of little resources to achieve so much by the Oyo State government, noting that South-West Governors are running a competitive race to regain the region’s leading position in good governance.
“The old Western Region was reputed to be the leading zone in the areas of innovations, infrastructure and good governance. We lost that rating for some time now.
“But I want to put it on record that the South West has regained its momentum. The Oyo State governor is a trailblazer. From Lagos to Ekiti, Ondo, Osun and Ogun states, South West is witnessing infrastructure upgrades. Our roads are being fixed, our schools and health centres are undergoing rehabilitation.
“ As a Governor of Osun State, I watched with keen interest the positive development in Oyo State. I do peer review, I must say that Oyo State is lucky to have Governor Makinde at the helm of affairs. We are proud of him” he said.
Earlier, Governor Seyi Makinde said his infrastructural agenda is premised on expanding business opportunities and creating multiple zones of development in Oyo State.

Governor Makinde reiterated his commitment to providing good governance to the people of the state, saying his administration would continue to prioritise projects that would bring the best value to the people of Oyo State.

On January 18th last year, Osun State Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke announced the construction of boreholes in each of the 332 political wards in the state to cushion the effect of water scarcity.
It was one of the cardinal programmes to mark his 100 days in office.
As announced by the Governor in his January speech, on the 27th of March last year, Adeleke told Osun people that boreholes had been constructed in each of the 332 wards in the state with water running satisfactorily from the Boreholes.
On July 3rd, 4 months after government claimed that the boreholes were working well; Governor Adeleke distributed generating set to each of the 332 locations to power the boreholes.
Investigation by Radio Nigeria reveals that the boreholes are functional in some areas, while they do not exist in other locations, and not functional in some other places visited.
At Ward 2 Aruru Balogun Compound as well as ward 5 both in Olorunda local Government, the boreholes had been abandoned by the residents due to its poor state of service and weeds have taken over the place, save for the dry season.
A resident of the Aruru Balogun Compound, Mr Sherif Abideen commended the siting of the borehole in area but maintained that it had never produced a drop of water since then.
Similarly, at Ward 2, 6 and 14 of Osogbo, the state capital water was not running in the facilities despite provision of generating sets to power the boreholes.
Radio Nigeria also visited locations in Boripe, Irewole, Olaoluwa, Ilesa East and West where only few of the boreholes were functioning well.
The borehole overhead tank at Ward 7, Irewole Local Government had collapsed.
One of the residents, who spoke to Radio Nigeria Mr Jamiu Olatunde shared the harrowing experience of people of the area, whom he said had resorted back to the stream in the area.
An Osun based civil society organisation, the Osun masterminds had earlier criticized the 332 borehole project, describing it as lacking in due process, while it observed that many of the boreholes were not functioning.
Consequently, sometimes in October last year, the Osun Masterminds dragged the government before the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission, ICPC over the borehole project as confirmed by the group’s spokesperson, Mr Ayodeji Ologun, who alleged that the Borehole contract was not advertised, bidded and awarded in compliance with the Osun State Public Procurement Law, 2015.
However, the state government maintained that only few of the Boreholes had issue due to insufficient technical appraisal of their locations before construction.
The Osun State commissioner for water resources, Me Sunday Oroniyi explained that only few of the boreholes had issues which are already been addressed.
Mr Oroniyi said government was already working on the phase two of the boreholes across the 332 wards, but would play more emphasis on technical evaluation of the areas to be cited, to avoid challenge faced during the first phase.
The Oyo State Governor, Engineer Seyi Makinde, has sent a request to the Oyo State House of Assembly, OYHA, to access a loan of one hundred and fifty billion naira to finance the ongoing Senator Rashidi Ladoja Circular Road in Ibadan and other infrastructure.

The governor in the letter said the request became necessary to enable the state government to complete the 104km road project and others in the state.
The House, while deliberating on the loan request, directed its committees on Finance, Appropriation and State Economic Planning and that of Works to investigate the loan request.
It urged the two joint committees to come up with a comprehensive report on the loan request and the mode of payment.
The speaker in his submission stressed the need for the committees to get all necessary briefs on the request and report to the House in one week.
“Having 150 billion for Ibadan Circular Road and other infrastructure is a good idea but we have to consider the payback mechanism. I meant the payment procedure. We also want the two committees to get all the necessary details about the proposed loan. We need a holistic report on the request, the economic impacts of the road and other infrastructure when completed among other details.” Oyo Speaker said
Lawmakers in Ogun State have canvassed more funding for the Public Works Agency to carry out routine maintenance of roads across the state.
The House of Assembly members also tasked the Ministry of Works and other relevant agencies to conduct feasibility studies on roads in the three Senatorial Districts of the State and embark on palliative works, where necessary before the end of the dry season.
They appealed at a budget defence session with the State Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Mr Adebowale Akinsanya and the Heads of allied agencies in the sector.
Addressing the House Committee on Finance and Appropriation, led by Mr Musefiu Lamidi, the Commissioner listed the major targets of the Ministry in the next fiscal year as the completion of all ongoing roads as well as river crossings and overhead bridges.
He pointed out that new roads would also be initiated to provide standard roads across the geopolitical zones of the State with a total budget size of 170.6 billion for the next fiscal year.

Oyo State Governor, Engineer Seyi Makinde has disclosed that work will soon begin on Agbowo Shopping Complex, Ibadan noting that the project remains part of his administration’s agenda to resuscitate the state’s assets.
Governor Makinde stated this while unveiling the billboard commemorating the UI @ 75 anniversary on the University Campus.
He said the contractor of the project would move to site in the next few weeks, just as he promised to carry out the Junction Improvement of the University of Ibadan Main Gate with a pedestrian bridge to link Agbowo axis.
The governor solicited for continuous support and cooperation of the University of Ibadan community, urging it to be patient, as according to him, the disruption of free flow of traffic will be inevitable once the projects start.
Governor Makinde while congratulating the school management in achieving milestones, noted that the University of Ibadan was renowned as the intellectual capital of not just Nigeria but the African continent and had produced intelligent personalities beyond the shores of the country.
He, however, charged the management of the University to begin the process of regaining its position as the intellectual capital of the continent by resetting the buttons.
Speaking further, the governor said he deliberately appointed University of Ibadan products into different positions in order to harness the opportunities of sound training provided by the University and unleash them into the governance environment.
He said: “It is an honour for me to be here this afternoon for the unveiling of the University of Ibadan @ 75 anniversary billboard.
“So, what we have done in Oyo State and under this administration, is to look at the lions at our backyard and to unleash them in our environment, and so far so good, it has been working very well.
“Whatever we can do as an administration towards making UI the intellectual capital in the continent, I will be your partner.”
He continued: “The project that the Oyo State government is carrying out, which is the junction improvement at UI will be expanded and we would put a pedestrian bridge so that when students are passing, they don’t have to get knocked down again, that would enhance the refurbishment of the Agbowo Shopping Complex.
“It is a life project, it would happen and you will see the contractor on site within a few weeks. I don’t think it would be more than four weeks, but they must get to that site and this time next year, it would be a typically different story.
“I wanted to make that point and also to solicit for the cooperation of the University Community, because when you are carrying out construction activities, it would disrupt the free flow of traffic. But it’s just for a period of time, at the end of that period, it is something that you all would be proud of.”
Earlier in his welcome address, the Chairman of the UI @ 75 anniversary committee, Professor Peter Olapegba, described the governor as a true partner in progress.
He thanked him for being a wonderful host as demonstrated through positive disposition and significant benefaction to the University of Ibadan.
The Federal Controller of Works in Oyo State, Mr Kayode Ibrahim says the road rehabilitation project in Saki town had been completed.

According to a statement personally signed by him on Saturday in Ibadan, the project, titled “Limited Rehabilitation of Opo Malu Road in Saki Oyo State was a Federal Government intervention project which has been completed.
He described the Budgit Tracka’s publication on the project as erroneous and grossly misleading, declaring that the project was executed as awarded and that any contrary information should be disregarded.
The Federal Controller of works explained that the project was awarded in Jan. 2022 with the Engineer’s order to commence work on March, 2022 and complete it within the period of three months.
“The location of the project, which is generally refer to as Opo Malu area, traverses eleven communities beginning from Opo Malu junction through Orogun road to Isale Adini in Saki.
“It is pertinent to note that prior to the federal government intervention, the road was completely impassable and the communities down the road cut off from the major road in Saki”, he stated.
Mr. Ibrahim added that the contractor completed the limited rehabilitation works on schedule and submitted her certificate which was dully processed.
He noted that the leadership of the 11 communities through which the rehabilitated road traverses had written a letter of satisfactory execution of the project to his office, a confirmation that the project was delivered.
