The Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) has called on the Muslim ummah to search for the crescent of Shawwal 1444 A.H, immediately after sunset on Thursday, 29 Ramadan 1444 A.H., which is equivalent to 20 April, 2023.

A statement by the Director of Administration, Zubairu Haruna Usman-Ugwu, indicates that the NSCIA President-General and Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, gave directive following the advice of the National Moon-Sighting Committee (NMSC).

According to the statement, if the crescent is sighted by Muslims in accordance with the moon sighting and verification standards, then Sultan Abubakar will declare Friday, 21 April, 2023, as the first day of Shawwal and the day of ‘Idul Fitr.

It said, however, that if the crescent is not sighted that day, then Saturday, 22, April 2023, automatically becomes the day of ‘Idul Fitr.

In the statement, the phone numbers of  members of the NMSC, in addition to the traditional Islamic leaders in each locality, are provided for contact and report of any credible and positive sighting of the crescent of Shawwal 1444 AH.

In the meantime, the NSCIA reminded Muslims to, in the spirit of Ramadan, give to the less privileged in the society, Zakatul Fitr, a compulsory food-levy imposed on privileged Muslims.

The council, therefore, appealed to all concerned to ensure that they do not only comply but also comply on time.

It said “the stipulated practice is to give out the prescribed measurement to beneficiaries in the last two days of Ramadan and not later than before the ‘Eid prayer.”

The NCIA felicitated the Nigerian Muslims and the entire Muslim world on the occasion of the 1444 A.H. ‘Idul Fitr and beseech Allah to grant everyone the opportunity to witness many more of it.

The council implored Muslims all over the country to be on the lookout for the announcement to be made by the Sultan on Thursday night.

The incoming administration of the President-Elect, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu has been urged to prioritize governance over politics.

Bishop of Ibadan Diocese, Anglican Communion, The Most Reverend Joseph Akinfenwa made the appeal while reading the Bishop’s charge during the first session of the 24th synod of the diocese at the Cathedral of Saint James the Great, Oke Bola, Ibadan.

The Most Reverend Akinfenwa said for the desired change and development Nigerians crave for to become reality, the President-Elect, as well as, other elected political leaders must shun politicking and focus more on governance.

The Most Reverend Akinfenwa appealed to Asiwaju Tinubu to ensure that his cabinet was populated with technocrats rather than career politicians.

“For many years, we have enumerated and reiterated myriad areas of need in our Nation, and made countless suggestions to government. This year, we shall be content to appeal to the incoming administration to give governance priority over politics. Our Nation has suffered a huge setback, and we need to exert ourselves extraordinarily if we are to catch up.”

The Bishop urged Oyo State Governor, Engineer Seyi Makinde to correct the notion that most Governors do not perform during their second term in office.

The Most Reverend Akinfenwa, while congratulating Governor Makinde for his reelection, called on the Governor to change the narrative through the delivery of landmark projects across the state.

“We congratulate the Governor of Oyo state on his re-election for a second term in office. We appreciate and commend him for fulfilling his promises to the electorate (especially teachers and civil servants) over the last four years. We also take good note of the various infrastructural projects that the government has managed to complete within just four years.”

“We appeal to Governor Seyi Makinde to please prove wrong the analysts who argue that second-term Governors are usually a tale of woes. Your Excellency, please let your own second term be a marked improvement over the first term. Our prayers are with you for divine wisdom and good health to steer the ship of our dear Oyo State to a place of greatness in the comity of states.”

The Most Reverend Akinfenwa equally charged Christians not to relent in their service to God and humanity, noting that no good work would go unrewarded.

The Bishop of Ibadan Diocese also harped on the need for people to always create time to rest from their everyday activities in order not to wear out.

He appreciated members of the diocese for their selfless services over the years, which he said had brought tremendous growth to the diocese.

The highlight of the programme was the launching of the Bishop’s Charge.

Earlier on Thursday at the Eucharistic opening service of the synod, held at the Cathedral of Saint James the Great, Oke Bola, The Venerable Timothy Jaiyeoba of Immanuel Anglican Church, Ashi, Ibadan admonished Christians not to despise the days of small beginnings but to put their trust in God for a better future.

The Venerable Jaiyeoba said though things might not be going at the desired pace at the onset, Christians should always keep faith in God and imbibe the virtue of patience.

The Venerable Jaiyeoba also admonished the congregants not to despise the poor, vulnerable or less privileged around them.

He harped on the need for Christians to always wait and rely on God, who alone was capable of turning things around for the better.

Prophet Boyede who was of the view that, if the inmates were not empowered with any skill, they could go back to their old ways when they were released, called for more support from Nigerian citizens and Corporate bodies in giving them a good life.

Expressing gratitude for the kind gesture by PFN, Assistant Controller of Corrections (in-charge, Agodi Correctional Centre), Mr Samuel Ayodele, promised that, the items would judiciously be utilized by the inmates.

” In fact, today’s gesture is a very wonderful one because, in this part of the country, we hardly find people who will be helpful to us, so when we see people who come to show this kind of gesture, we feel appreciated and we are happy.

‘‘At the moment we have inmates who have written NECO and had brilliant results that, they cannot go out to further their education, this made us seek the assistance of an Open University.

One of their conditions was to get about 25 laptops and the prison fellowship of Nigeria has been able to donate ten laptops which they promised to bring the remaining 15 later in the year. ‘‘We say thank u’’.

Mr Ayodele who noted that the correctional centre needed more assistance enjoined Nigerians not to relent in their efforts in making life better, adding that, they should show more love and care for the inmates.

The Vicar, Saint Anne’s Church, Molete Ibadan, The Venerable Adewale Sanda

Ash Wednesday is a solemn reminder of human mortality and the need for reconciliation with God and marks the beginning of the Lenten season.

The Vicar, Saint Anne’s Church, Molete Ibadan, The Venerable Adewale Sanda stated this in a chat with Radio Nigeria Ibadan.

The Venerable Sanda said that the significance of the day is to experience part of the sufferings Jesus Christ went through before he finally died for the sins of humanity.

The clergy explained that the ash sprinkled on the foreheads of believers is to remind Christians that they came from the dust and unto dust, they would return.

The Vicar, therefore, admonished Christians to use the 40 days fasting period to be repentant of their sins and be closer to God through prayers.

He, however, appealed to Nigerians to shun violence before, during and after the General election.

Similarly, the Bishop, the Catholic Diocese of Oyo, Most Rev. Emmanuel Badejo has charged Nigerians to shun thuggery, buying and selling of votes including other acts of criminality during the elections.

Bishop, Catholic Diocese of Oyo, Most Rev. Emmanuel Badejo gave the advice while speaking with Radio Nigeria on the significance of Ash Wednesday and Lent.

Describing ashes received on Wednesday and Lent as a season to knock on Heaven’s door for divine intervention in the affairs of our nation, Bishop Badejo emphasized the mobilization of human, material and spiritual resources to attract God’s mercy for a successful election.

The Cleric who also called Nigerians to repentance, humility and love said the three pillars of lent which are prayer, fasting and almsgiving must go together to secure heaven’s attention.

Bishop Badejo maintained that since God is supreme over the affairs of any nation, Nigeria will be healed, peaceful and become great again if people could humble themselves, pray and depart from their evil ways.

Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent, occurring six and a half weeks before Easter.
