Governments at all levels have been encouraged to come to the rescue of students and staff of the Federal Polytechnic, Ilaro who are recently affected by flood.

The Rector of the Institution, Dr Mukail Akinde made the call during an on-the-spot assessment of flood ravaged areas of the ancient town largely inhabited by students after the weekend’s heavy downpour.

Dr Akinde who advised the Students and Staff of the institution to stay away from flood prone areas of the town to avoid loss of lives and property noted that the step became imperative in view of the impending heavy rainfall in the coming months as predicted by Nigeria Meteorological Agency, NIMET and National Emergency Management Agency, NEMA.

While commiserating with those who lost valuable goods and properties to the unfortunate incident, the Rector implored the students to desist from renting houses in areas prone to flooding such as Riverside, advising those who still reside in such areas to relocate to safer places.

Following the growing concerns that tertiary institutions might increase tuition fees on the heels of the recently passed Students Loan Act, the House of Representatives has warned against such a move.

It also resolved to convene a legislative summit on student loans and access to higher education with all stakeholders in the education sector.

This resolution followed the consideration of a motion moved at plenary by Terseer Ugbor, the member representing the Kwande/Ushongo federal constituency of Benue State.

Presenting the motion, Ugbor said the aim of the act was to enable students to borrow to fund their education, away from the traditional parental provision.

He said: “The use of students loans and educational credit schemes in most countries of the world is often justified on the grounds that it guarantees greater access to higher education for the less privileged citizens

“It is further predicated on the notion that education is an investment in human capital, which in turn promote individual development, economic growth and national productivity.

“After several years of unsuccessful attempts by successive administrations to introduce students loans, scholarships and other educational credit schemes, the 9th National Assembly passed the Students Loans (Access to Higher Education) Bill, 2023, which was recently signed into law by the president to provide the legal and institutional framework for implementation of a Students Loan Scheme in the country.

“While the objectives and intendment of the Students Loans (Access to Higher Education) Act, 2023 are patriotic and would impact positive access to higher education in Nigeria, especially among underprivileged citizens, there are several critical omissions and identifiable bottlenecks that would stultify or frustrate the successful implementation of the Act if immediate further legislative action is not taken to ensure its efficient implementation.

“The intendment of the Students Loans (Access to Higher Education) Act, 2023 is highly commendable and its enactment has been well received by a large segment of the general public, particularly Nigerian youths, the identified and observable lapses have the potential to frustrate its smooth implementation for the overall benefit of Nigerian students.

“There’s urgent need to convene a legislative summit with all key stakeholders to develop a strategy to ensure the smooth implementation of the Act for the benefit of the indigent Nigerian students.”

The motion when put to voice vote, received the support of the majority of lawmakers.

The Nigeria Union of Teachers, NUT, has described Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board’s allegation that the University and Tertiary Matriculation Examination result presented by Mmesoma Ejikeme is fake as disgraceful and embarrassing.

The NUT National President, Mr Titus Amba, in an interview with newsmen on Wednesday, said for Mmesoma and other candidates to have access to upgrade and present fake UTME results showed that JAMB had not fully secured its systems and the process of conducting its exam.

“It is quite unfortunate that this came up as a national issue, it is quite embarrassing. Embarrassing in the sense that it shows that JAMB has not truly secured its own system in terms of examination.

“If the result published or advertised by the girl who already received scholarships was not the real result that came out from their portal, then, we should question the security of the process of the UTME examination.”

He advised JAMB “What I will advise as an educationist is for JAMB to see how best they can secure their examination process so that these things won’t come up again. I advise that they should look inwardly at the examination process. Somebody within them is aiding and abetting all these things that are happening.”

Amba also called on the government to fund the examination boards in the country so as to prevent such future occurrences.

“Government should be able to fund these examination bodies very well and make sure if anything like this happens, they should be held responsible, because UTME is not something you joke with. There are situations where if The West African Senior School Certificate Examination is taking place at 9 am by 7 am you will see questions flying online. How did these questions leak out when it’s yet to be written? Government should rethink. It is quite unfortunate that someone will sit under his closet and manufacture results and scores. I know the JAMB registrar to be a very strong person and a no-nonsense professor. He should look inwardly.”

Also speaking, National President, Association of Tutorial School Operators, Mr Dotun Sodunke, complained that there were different syndicates online posting advertisements on how they could assist candidates to upgrade their results.

“Unfortunately, the government is aware of all these adverts and nothing is been done to all these small boys that are into education or academic yahoo and soiling our names.

“If I want to sit for WAEC now, all you need is N2,000, subscribe online, and you will get these questions, including essay writing and everything,” he said.

A former Minister of Education, Oby Ezekwesili has called for an independent investigation into the claims made by Ejikeme Mmesoma, an Anambra candidate who was accused of forging her 2023 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination result by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board.

The former minister in a post made via her official Twitter handle @obyezeks said, “This saga between Mmesoma Ejikeme and @JAMBHQ requires an Independent Tech investigation to unearth all facts. Listening to her in this video, it is reasonable to request a forensic investigation to help reveal what really happened. I have reached out to the Registrar of JAMB.

An Independent investigation would turn this curious episode into a Learning Opportunity for @JAMBHQ and everyone, especially students. I frankly see no downsides in asking a team of Independent Technology folks to investigate and publicly share their findings. Let’s do it.”

It would be recalled that JAMB in a statement on Sunday evening noted that Ejikeme manually inflated her UTME result from 249 to 362 and used her manually inflated score to attract a N3m scholarship from Innoson Motors and was set to be awarded by the Anambra State government before she was exposed.

But Ejikeme in a video released on Monday evening claimed she printed the “fake” result from the JAMB portal.

The leadership of the National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, on Tuesday, visited President Bola Tinubu over the student loan bill that he signed into law on Monday.

The NANS delegation was led by the body’s National President, Umar Barambu.

Speaking to State House Correspondents after engagements with the President, Barambu revealed that they urged him to review the constitution of the special committee that will oversee the new Nigerian Education Loan Fund to include student representatives.

The NANS President said: “We thank the President for the Students Loan Bill.

“We have outlined the clauses that we are not too comfortable with. And part of them is the issue of that board that we mentioned to the President, which we said at least students’ representatives should be captured and there are some organisations that they put there, which to us, they don’t need to be there.

“We gave him an example, most especially the Nigerian Bar Association, ASUU. ASUU has its own microfinance bank running their own affairs without students on their board. So, I don’t think it’s wise for us to allow them to be inside our own board because it is purely students.

“We are the major stakeholders of that bank. So I don’t think allowing them to be there is good. Not only them, we mentioned a lot of people that they should remove and put more of student-oriented organisation.”

In response, the President promised to consider the requests of the NANS leaders but urged the students’ body to ensure unity among its members across the country to achieve more.  “You have to promote unity and stability among each other. You have to employ democratic means in your programmes and elections. I have to say anyone who is unable to accept and celebrate a free and fair election, does not deserve the joy of victory,” Tinubu said.

The President stressed that poverty should not prevent any Nigerian from obtaining quality education at the highest levels.

The 2023 Direct Entry e-PIN registration sales will close on Saturday, 26th May 2023, while registration of those who obtained the e-PIN ends on Tuesday, 30th May 2023.

A statement on Tuesday by the Acting Director of Public Affairs JAMB, Dr Fabian Benjamin says the 2023 DE registration, which commenced in February 2023, was extended for all desiring candidates to register and was, at a point, suspended to facilitate the incorporation of certain safeguards designed to enhance the sanctity of the exercise.

It says the 2023 DE registration is unique among many others as it came with some features meant to enhance the Board’s capacity to permanently address those loopholes hitherto being exploited by some vested interests.

According to the statement, the Board is restating its determination to always innovate means and ways of checkmating all acts of infractions and at the same time would not hesitate to impose appropriate sanctions on any A’level awarding institutions found wanting.

‘’All A’level institutions are enjoined to be vigilant as there are deliberate intentions by desperate candidates to compromise their operations.

All genuine aspiring DE candidates, who are yet to register for the exercise are, therefore, urged to come out now to register as the Board would not entertain any further extension’’.
