President Muhammadu Buhari will depart Abuja, Sunday, September 18, for New York, United States to attend the annual meeting of world leaders, the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA77).

The theme for the 77th session which opened on Tuesday, September 13 is: “A Watershed Moment: Transformative Solutions to Interlocking Challenges.”

President Buhari will take his turn to deliver the National Statement on the second day of the General Debates on Wednesday, September 21.

Aside his statement, the president will also participate in High Level meetings and side events including the Nigeria International Economic Partnership Forum (NIEPF), convened by Nigeria in partnership with the Business Council for International Understanding (BCIU); Strengthening Coordination through National Humanitarian Development Peace (NHDP) Framework: A practical approach to sustainable durable solutions to ensure no one is left behind, organised by the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development; and the EFCC-NEPAD Programme on combating Illicit Financial Flows.

President Buhari will also hold strategic bilateral meetings with World Leaders, renowned investors and heads of multinational organisations while in New York.

On the entourage of the President are the First Lady, Aisha Buhari, some governors, Ministers and top government officials.

The president is expected back in the country on Monday, September 26.

Banyana Banyana of South Africa have defeated African Champions, Super Falcons of Nigeria by four goals to two to win the maiden edition of Aisha Buhari Tournament.

The final of the competition was played at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Onikan, Lagos.

The game had ended three goals to nothing at half time.

Both countries will now focus on playing qualifying matches for the 2022 Africa’s Women Nations Cup coming in Morocco.

The wife of the President, Aisha Buhari has urge women professionals in the country to harness their experience towards identifying strategies, aimed at addressing the spate of violence against the girl child, women folk and juveniles.

Mrs. Aisha Buhari stated this during a virtual meeting organized by the Medical Women Association of Nigeria, M-WAN.

Mrs. Buhari, who was represented by Dr. Fatima Jibrilla, noted her pet initiative known as Future Assured Project, has spearheaded the wellbeing and empowerment of women against violence and stigmatization.

Speaking on enforcing legislations on harmful traditional practices against women, the President, Medical Women Association of Nigeria Dr. Minnie Oseji, said M-WAN has launched a sixteen days campaign against female genital mutilation and crude widowhood rites across the country.

Professor Adeniike Grange, in a lecture on Challenges of Women in Leadership, advised women professionals to be resolute in their quest to assume leadership roles in order to contribute meaningfully to addressing gender inequality in the country.

Also, international activist Gabriel Casper, observed that inequality and stereotypes are the oxygen upon which gender based violence thrives and called for concerted efforts at eradicating the menace.

The virtual meeting was attended by medical women representatives from Nigeria, the United States of America, Australia and the United Kingdom.

Over one thousand and five hundred women in Osun have been benefited from Wife of the President, Mrs Aisha Buhari palliative programme.

Distributing the palliative on behalf of Mrs Buhari, Osun State First Lady, Mrs Kafayat Oyetola, said the palliative was part of efforts of mitigating the effects of Covid-19 on women in the state.

The First Lady, who doled out empowerment equipment to artisans under Future Assured Programme, FAP, initiated to help the less privileged during this COVID-19 pandemic, said government would continue to design programmes that would have direct impact on the citizens.

In a remark, the South West Zonal Coordinator of the Future Assured Programme, Mrs Adeyinka Bamigbose, urged the beneficiaries to make judicious use of the empowerment equipment effective.

Mrs Bamigbose said the initiative was aimed at reducing poverty among women, especially at this period of economic hardship occasioned by coronavirus.

Some of the beneficiaries lauded the wife of the president for the gesture, saying it would go a long to enhance their economic status.

Items distributed include hair dryers, food items as well as hand washing facilities.

Mrs Aisha Buhari, wife of the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd), has lost a protocol officer, Sani Yekini.

Mrs Buhari, who announced Yekini’s passing via her social media platforms, described him as “very committed, dedicated and courageous”.

According to her, the late staff worked in her office for four years and died of diabetes.

While commiserating with the family of the deceased, she wrote, “On behalf of my family and the entire staff of my office, I wish to condole the family of Mr Sani Yekini, a protocol officer in my office, who died earlier today. May Allah grant him Jannatul Firdaus.

“Mr Yekini served in my office for 4 years, he was down with diabetes and lost the battle today.

“He was a very committed, dedicated, and courageous staff. May God grant the family the fortitude to bear the loss.”
