Oyo State Commissioner for Health, Dr Oluwaserimi Ajetomobi, wants the stakeholders in the education sector to provide an enabling environment for girls to ease the difficulties faced in disposing of a used sanitary pad.
Dr Ajetomobi made the call at a programme commemorating this year’s World Menstrual Hygiene Day, organised by the office of the wife of the state’s governor, Mrs Tamunominini Makinde.
Dr Ajetomobi noted that a used sanitary pad, which was not changed at the normal time, could breed bacteria, which would affect the girl child later in life.
In a speech, the Oyo state Commissioner for Health, Mr Olusegun Olayiwola, advised the girls to seek knowledge to counter the myth and misconceptions about menstruation.
The wife of the state governor, Mrs Makinde, called on the teachers to be friendly with the students, for them to open up to them whenever they faced any challenge during menstruation, especially during school hours
Highlights of the programme were a visual presentation of a playlet on menstrual hygiene and confidence during menstruation.
Sanitary pads, hand sanitiser and underwear were presented to the students who were drawn from the 33 local government areas of the state.

The Ondo State government has celebrated forty women as champions of immunisation and family planning having stuck to the life-saving procedures for a long period of time.
The programme was launched in Ifedore and Odigbo Local Government Areas of the state, with twenty women in each of the council area benefiting from the gift items which included foodstuffs, cash of ten thousand naira, plaques (inscribed with their names and pictures) and other items.
Speaking at the event in Igbaraoke, Ifedore Council area, the Commissioner for Health, Dr Banji Ajaka expressed optimism that the initiative would spur more women to embrace family planning and also present their babies for immunisation regularly.
Dr Ajaka who was represented by the Special Adviser to the Governor, Professor Simi Odimayo restated the commitment of Governor Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa to the wellbeing of mothers and children in Ondo State, using all available strategies.
The commissioner congratulated the champions for their commitment to family planning and immunisation in the bid to keep a healthy family, assuring them that government would regularly come up with programmes and policies that would make life more meaningful for women and children in the state.
He said,“the government is really in love with the people and wants to showcase the love at all times that’s why these women are being appreciated today. The government is not only appreciating the women but making family planning and immunisation commodities available and the teams supported. Family planning will help women to be in good form to take their children for immunisation, so I congratulate the champions and urge them to become advocates of immunisation and family planning in their communities”.
The Permanent Secretary, Ondo State Primary Health Care Development Agency, ODPHCDA, Dr Francis Akanbiemu said the idea of the programme was conceived by the award winning agency to encourage mothers who had shown great commitment to matters of immunisation and family planning being propagated by government to enhance maternal and child health in the state.
Dr Akanbiemu noted, “We tell our mothers, take your children for immunisation, ensure you space your children through family planning, but not all of them take to this, so the government under the leadership of Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa considered it worthwhile to reward those mothers who listened to and acted on the government’s advice so that they will serve as role models for others”.
He said even though, the immunisation coverage of the state was currently at over eighty-four percent, the programme, “rewarding the champions” would be held in all the local government areas in the state to ensure one hundred percent coverage of both mothers and children in terms of family planning and immunization”.
“By the time we are done taking this programme round all the eighteen local government areas of Ondo State, our immunisation data must have gone up and also improve service delivery. The champions emerged through rigorous selection processes and we are hopeful that for every ten persons motivated, one thousand other mothers would join the train”.
The Director of Disease Control and Immunisation in the agency, Dr Victor Adefesoye while congratulating the champions stressed the need for other women to embrace family planning so they could avoid unplanned pregnancies which he noted was dangerous to their health while also ensuring that their children do not miss any immunisation schedule.
Also speaking, the Director of Medical Services, ODPHCDA, Dr Paulinus Omode admonished mothers generally to embrace preventive health care system by making sure that their children live in a clean environment, eat good diet and are immunised against child-killer diseases.
In their goodwill messages, representatives of World Health Organisation, WHO, Mrs Modupe Dosumu and that of United Nations Population Fund, UNPF, Mrs Opeyemi Agunbiade commended Ondo State government for the innovation.
Primary Health Care Coordinator in Ifedore Council Area, Dr Adedayo Fayanju described the strategy as a step towards boosting the health of women and children.
A royal father, the Adapogun of Ipogun, Oba Rapheal Ojo expressed delight that the exercise started in his domain especially at this time when economic challenges were compelling families to have only children they could cater for.
Responding on behalf of the beneficiaries, Mrs Ebunoluwa Charles, and Hajia Mariam Yusuf appreciated Ondo State government for the gesture, promising to be advocates of family planning and immunisation in their various localities.
According to them, “this is one honour we will appreciate in a long time to come, we appreciate the gifts, the foodstuff and other items the government has given us today, we will definitely continue in this line and convince more women to be part of be committed to immunisation and family planning”.
At Odigbo Local Government Area, the ODPHCDA train landed in Ore Town where another set of twenty champions were celebrated.
At the event, the Commissioner for Health, Dr Banji Ajaka also congratulated the lucky mothers for emerging champions of immunisation and family planning and charged them to always key into government’s programmes and policies aimed at improving their child and maternal health.
On his part, the Permanent Secretary, ODPHCDA, Dr Francis Akanbiemu hinted that women who adhere to all medical procedures on maternal and child health would continue to receive motivation from government.
The Ondo State Immunisation Officer, Mrs Comfort Olagundoye while enumerating the criteria used in selecting the champions noted that those considered were found to have completed all immunisation schedules for their children right from birth and also encouraged other women to keep immunisation appointments for them to have healthy children.
Two of the champions from Ore, Mrs Ajoke Ikumawoyi, Deborah Ige Imisioluwa Akintunde also hailed the Ondo State government for the encouragement with a pledge not to renege.
In all, 40 women were decorated as immunisation and family planning champions in both Ifedore and Odigbo Council areas with each of them going home with foodstuff, ten thousand naira cash, plaques and other items.
The event was witnessed by the Director of Public Health, Ondo State Ministry of Health, Dr Stephen Fagbemi, who represented the Permanent Secretary, Dr Niran Ikuomola, top officials of the Ondo State Primary Healthcare Development Agency which include Director Planning, Research and Statistics, Dr Yetunde Olagbuji, Director Medical Services, Dr Paulinus Omode, Director, Health System Development, Dr Olajide, Dr Isreal Adeyemi, Director of Finance and Administration, Mrs Folasade Ale, Dr Isreal Adeyemi, and Director Pharmaceutical Services.
Oyo State government has called on residents of the state to remain calm over the reported cases of Lassa Fever in Iwajowa Local Government Area of the state.
The Commissioner for Health, Dr. Bode Ladipo, made this known in a statement issued by the ministry and made available to newsmen in Ibadan.
The statement read in part: “The attention of the Ministry was drawn to reported cases of deaths at Iwajowa Local Government Area of Oyo State on Wednesday, 12th January, 2022. The deaths were said to have been associated with fever, gastrointestinal symptoms and some neck swelling.
“This warranted a high-level investigating team led by the Honourable Commissioner for Health to visit the LGA on Thursday, 13th January, 2022 to assess the situation and provide necessary support to abate any further transmission of the illness.
“The team comprised of senior officials of the Ministry, the State Primary Healthcare Board and the World Health Organization (WHO)
“An initial visit to the State General Hospital at Iwere lle revealed the fact that there was an increase in number of cases brought from the Gaa Agbaruru settlement with confirmation of two (2) deaths at the facility. The team was then led to Gaa Agbaruru, a Fulani settlement in Iwere ward of the LGA where victims of the illness came from.
“It was observed that there were cases with symptoms mentioned above but were recuperating. It was also confirmed that there was indeed high degree of contact between the inhabitants, rodents and bats. In addition, the challenge of having potable water was noted.
“Blood samples were taken from the recuperating individuals with sample of water also taken. These samples were sent to the National Reference Laboratory for Haemorrhagic Fever in Abuja for analysis and confirmation”.
Dr Ladipo noted that the state government was doing everything possible to check further spread of the virus.
He said, government had already set up surveillance system across Local governments in the state to abate further transmission of the virus.
According to the commissioner, the Ministry of Health has repositioned doses of antiviral agents for treatment of the reported cases, while personal protective devices have been provided for health workers at Iwere Ile and Iganna.
Dr Ladipo therefore, enjoined the general public to refer similar cases to the nearest government hospitals for free and quality care.

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State is taking proactive steps in the prevention of visual impairment and treatment of other eye challenges.
The new Commissioner For Health in the State, Dr. Taiwo Ladipo, made the disclosure at a news conference held in ibadan, the state capital in commemoration of the 2021 world sight day, with the theme “love your eyes”.
The Programme was also used to flag off-world sight day walk and free screening, with the provision of glasses for civil servants, in collaboration with the ophthalmological society of Nigeria, lions club international district 404b, Rotary Club International, and global vision support international.
According to Dr. Ladipo, ‘the present administration is working to ensure all citizens across the state enjoys good health. We should all note that we all need to join hands in reducing the global burden of people living with eye defects. Getting involved in world sight day is by making a commitment to “love your eyes” pledge to have a sight test or care for your eyes and encourage others to do the same by making a pledge too.’
He stated that in a bid to address the bigger picture of eye health in Nigeria and the global level, ‘there is need to encourage awareness of eye health, get a sight test, and recommend others to do same. Other involvements include being involved in encouraging elders, children, friends, and family members about getting eye checks, sponsor an eye check and glasses donations for employees, which the government of Oyo State is doing today.
Dr. Ladipo, who noted that billions of people around the globe are functionally blind because they don’t have access to eye examination and care, stated that if the population of Nigeria is 180 million, it means 1.8million people are functionally blind based on the international acceptable percentage.
He explained that Governor Makinde had supported a series of free eye screening and treatment across different local government areas in collaboration with different partners, saying ‘free eye surgeries were carried out at ring road state hospital and different local government areas. ‘Today, we are here to help create awareness on prevention of visual impairment and treatment of other eye challenges.’
Radio Nigeria gathered that at least 360 persons have benefitted from free cataract operations in 2021 alone, under the Omituntun free health mission of Governor Makinde, apart from the distribution of more than 3,000 eyeglasses, and eye treatment for more than 1,000 persons with the provision of free medications.
Ogun State Government says it is determined to sustain the empowerment of women of reproductive age and families through the provision of quality family planning services to further improve the health indices of the state.
Commissioner for Health, Dr. Tomi Coker made this known in Abeokuta, at the “End of Project Dissemination” put together by a development partner on reproductive health.
Dr. Coker said the state was poised to provide affordable, qualitative, and efficient healthcare delivery for the people.
The Health Commissioner noted that the Primary Healthcare Centres, PHCs, across the state had been renovated, equipped, and staffed to meet the daily health needs of people in various communities with the availability of human and material resources for family planning services.
Also, the Executive Secretary, Primary Health Care Development Board, Dr. Elijah Ogunsola said the state had drawn a strategic plan to enhance family planning programs, adding that support received from the partner over the four-year period would assist in improving the welfare of women of reproductive age.
Earlier, the Director, the Challenge Initiative, TCI, Nigeria, Dr. Victor Igharo who commended the government for showing interest in improving its family planning indices, gave the assurance that the organisation would continue to give technical backing to stimulate demand for family planning uptake.
Stakeholders in the health sector have been urged to support and take ownership of the Basic Health Care Provision Fund, as a key intervention and innovation to ensure accountability and sustainability of qualitative healthcare delivery for people at the grassroots.
Commissioner for Health, Dr. Tomi Coker made the call in Abeokuta, during a stakeholders’ meeting on COVID-19 Vaccination Response, BHCPF and other Primary Health Care Centres, PHCs, activities.
Dr. Coker explained that BHCPF is a Federal and State Government-funded initiative, to provide free minimum basic health care to the poorest and most vulnerable Nigerians through accredited PHCs in each of the 36 States and the Federal Capital Territory.
The Ogun health commissioner who attributed some avoidable deaths to poor quality medications as a result of varying sources of supply, reaffirmed the present administration’s determination to avoid preventable deaths in the state.
The Executive Secretary, Primary Health Care Development Board, Dr. Elijah Ogunsola noted that successful implementation of the programme would depend on strategic planning, effective monitoring and transparency.
In their separate contributions, the Ogun State Coordinator, World Health Organisation, WHO, Dr. Dele Sunday, Ogun State Representative, National Primary Health Care Development Agency, Mrs. Olatunde Adebiyi and her counterpart from the United Nations Children Emergency Fund, Hajia Aishatu Zango encouraged the people to support government’s effort at ensuring the wellbeing of citizens, especially children, through active engagement and participation in various PHC activities in their localities.
Government at all levels and members of the public have been advised to create conducive environment for people with physical impairments to allow them to live meaningful lives.
A don in the department of Physiotherapy, College of Medicine, University of Ibadan, Professor Kolapo Hamzat, gave the advise while delivering a keynote address at an event marking this year’s Physiotherapy Day.
Professor Hamzat said the call became necessary for everyone to prepare for any eventuality that might in the future lead to disability, especially impairment associated with old age.
While speaking on the topic, “Creating an environment to improve quality of Life For People With Disabilities”, Professor Hamzat said everyone that wish long life would become permanently disabled at some point in life, hence the need to prepare for the future.
The don who highlighted some of the effects of Covid-19 on its survivors to include partial memory loss and difficulty in mobility due to fatigue, said physiotherapists have been trained to help the survivors cope.
Also speaking, Oyo State Commissioner for Health, Dr. Bashir Bello who highlighted the importance of physiotherapists in human health, said the state was planning to establish a physiotherapy unit in all its hospitals across the state.
Early in an address, Oyo State chairperson, Nigeria Society of Physiotherapy, Dr. Olubukola Olaleye said the World Physiotherapy Day which is celebrated on the eighth of September every year, was to raise awareness on the impact of the profession on the medical system.
The programme was attended by physiotherapists across the state, political office holders and students of Command Secondary School, Mokola, Ibadan.

The Presiding Judge, National Industrial Court, Ibadan, Justice J. D Peters has ordered the management of Ladoke Akintola Teaching Hospital, Ogbomoso, to immediately grant autonomy to Medical Laboratory Scientists in the hospital and separate it from other professionals.
The court’s order sequel to a suit filed by the Association of Medical Laboratory Scientists of Nigeria, LAUTECH Teaching Hospital, Ogbomoso Chapter, against the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice in Oyo State, Commissioner for Health, LAUTECH Teaching Hospital Management Board, Chief Medical Director, LAUTECH Teaching Hospital and four others seeking for the establishment of the Department of Medical Laboratory Science in the hospital.
Declaring the judgment, Justice Peters noted that it was not appropriate to put various professional together and expect them to perform optimally.
The judge said members of the Association of Medical Laboratories Scientists were professionals and qualified to operate as directorate without any outside intervention.
He therefore ordered that the service of Laboratory Science should be recognized as Directorate and be separated from other departments in the area of duties and administration.
The court also declared that the claimant should not be victimized for the suit.
Ekiti state government has shifted the date for the reopening of worship centres from today July 17 to August 4.
Governor Kayode Fayemi had during his recent broadcast announced that worship centres would be allowed to reopen as from today for Muslims, Saturday and Sunday for Christians.
In a statement in Ado Ekiti, the Commissioner for Health and Human Services, Dr Mojisola Yaya-Kolade made it clear that the shifting of the dates was to enable worship centres to meet the conditions set out by government.
She directed all the worship centres to fumigate their premises which would be ascertained by the Environmental Health and Sanitation Departments of various councils before they would be issued certificates of fumigation by the Ministry of Environment at no cost.
Dr Yaya-Kolade stated that worship centres would only be allowed to open once in a week for maximum of two hours while each place of worship must provide an infrared thermometer for the checking of the temperatures of members at the entrance.
The Commissioner for Health however said government had exempted children between one and twelve years as well as people above the age of sixty five from worship centres.
She noted that government took all these steps to prevent worshippers from contracting Coronavirus in Ekiti state.
Another case of coronavirus disease has been confirmed in Ondo state.
Commissioner for Health, Dr Wahab Adegbenro while confirming the latest case to Radio Nigeria said the patient, a woman was reported by a private hospital as a suspected case after which necessary test was conducted and it turned out positive.
Dr Adegbenro hinted that the patient had since been moved to the Infectious Disease Hospital along Igbatoro Road, Akure for treatment.
He said there was no plan to quarantine the private hospital but contact tracing had commenced to reduce the spread of the disease in Oke-Aro Community where the facility was situated.
Dr Adegbenro appreciated the private hospital for alerting government promptly urging other private health facilities in the state to emulate such step.
The latest infection now brings to twenty the total number of coronavirus in Ondo state out of which there are six active cases, thirteen discharges and one death.
Health workers at the Ogun State COVID-19 Testing Centres have commenced the use of protective glass box instead of the usual disposable Personal Protective Equipment, PPEs, while collecting samples for screening.
The State Ministry of Health, had recently announced that the unique Protective Glass Box was more reliable against infection compared with the PPE which could expose the user to risk at the point of removal.
The Ministry said in a statement in Abeokuta that health workers operating behind the glass box only had to extend their arms through the built-in hand gloves compartment to take samples of persons at the other side of the box.
It noted that trained hygienists would ensure the disinfection of hand gloves compartment after each use to enhance the safety of health officers collecting samples for screening.
The statement indicated that a number of suspected patients who presented themselves for testing at the centre on reasonable grounds were given their results promptly.
It added that a state government delegation led by the Deputy Governor, Engineer Noimot Salako-Oyedele and the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Tomi Coker had recently visited the newly unveiled Walk-in and Drive-through Testing Centre at the Ijamido Town Hall, Ota for assessment.
Oyo state government has warned
prospective applicants into the state Post Primary School Teaching Service Commission
as teaching and non-teaching staff to refrain from paying anyone for
employment.
The Commissioner for Education,
Science and Technology, Mr Olasunkanmi Olaleye disclosed this while briefing
newsmen shortly after an Executive Council Meeting.
Mr Olaleye assured that the recruitment would be based strictly on merit, noting that about one hundred and fifty-six applicants had applied and that the date for a Computer Based Test (CBT) would be next month.
Also speaking, the Attorney General
and Commissioner for Justice in the state, Professor Oyelowo Oyewo hinted that
a bill for the establishment of the office of public defender that would assist
indigent citizens with free legal services would soon be transmitted to the
house.
On the employment for Operation
Amotekun, Professor Oyewo said recruitment into the security outfit would
commence as soon as institutional framework and command network was fully
established.
The Commissioner for Health, Dr Bashir Bello also disclosed that the state executive council had approved the purchase of ten ambulances to be distributed across all zones of the state.
