More facts have unveiled the tragic details of last Friday’s stray elephant attack in the Oke Ogun Area of Oyo State, with affected residents now counting their losses.

Radio Nigeria gathered that the Vigilante Group of Nigeria, VGN, is currently mourning the loss of one of its members, Alhaji Muhammad Binge, who died when the animal attacked him while he was on surveillance duty.

The Commander of the VGN Oyo State Command, Comrade Sunday Olajide, confirmed that the late vigilante received burial at the exact spot of the attack, following tradition.

A senior member of the VGN in Itesiwaju Local Government Area, Mr Olami Ogundayo, explained that the elephant also killed two other persons in the Oke Oyan Area of the local government.

After those deaths, some members of the community mobilized and killed the animal to prevent further casualties.

However, reacting to the incident, the Controller of Parks at the Old Oyo National Park, Mr Teslim Kareem, said he could not immediately say much about the incident until the return of his men, whom he had sent on a fact-finding mission.

He added that he was also awaiting an official statement from the park’s headquarters in Abuja.

Conflicting reports about the tragedy by some media organizations (not Radio Nigeria) over the weekend had raised doubts about the authentic number of lives lost in the incident, as previously recalled.
