The wife of Delta State Governor, Dame Edith Okowa, has stressed the important roles women play in the development of the family and the society.

Dame Edith Okowa stated this in Asaba, while delivering a message at an event to celebrate the 2022 International Women’s Day.

Mrs Okowa also noted that the group has a role to play to address the declining moral values in the society.


On the challenges of gender bias and inequality, the State Commissioner for Women Affairs, Mrs. Flora Alanta, urged the folk to mobilize and support women agenda to effect the desired change.


Women professionals and traditional rulers including the Omu of Anioma, Obi Martha Dukwu, and the State Chairperson Society of Women Accountants, Lucy Okena, also gave goodwill messages at the occasion.

The event was celebrated with the theme: Break the Bias.

The wife of Delta State Governor Dame Edith Okowa, has called for increased national spiritual consciousness in light of recent challenges facing the nation.

Mrs. Okowa stated this at the Government House in Asaba, during the 6th edition of the Annual Mothers Arise Programme with the theme Faith for all Season.

She urge the citizenry to make decisions with eternity in view, while asserting that a spiritual awakening was needed to attain life-long victories.

On the COVID-19 pandemic the Governor’s wife admonished people to observe the protocols, noting despite the deadly nature of the virus it could be defeated if the citizenry follow the rules such as physical distancing and regular washing of hands.

Meanwhile, in a sermon, the Guest Speaker Pastor Blessing Ameachi, stressed that people need to exercise faith to overcome challenges bedeviling the nation, nothing with faith everything is possible as a Christian.

The annual event which attracted women dignitaries, was characterized by prayers for the family, the church and the nation.

Crime

The wife of Delta State Governor Dame Edith Okowa has urged victims of rape to promptly report such incidents to the authorities for the appropriate punishment for offenders and to deter potential perpetrators of the crime.

Mrs. Okowa stated this at the Government House Asaba, during an event to celebrate children with the theme: Access to Child Friendly Justice System.

The governor’s wife also decried the practice where parents of victims of abuse fails to report such cases to the police due to pressure from family of the rapist or fear of stigmatization.

Meanwhile, Delta State Commissioner for Women Affairs, Community and Social Development Mrs. Flora Alatan, condemned the rise in cases of child molestation, while advocating improvements in implementation of the nation’s child justice system to protect children from abuse.

The commissioner also appealed for easy access to legal provisions aim to guarantee the right of children.

The event featured a debate competition and art exhibition, where school children from the three senatorial districts of the state won laptops and cash prizes.

Dame Okowa stated this at the 2020 Mothers Arise Prayer Conference at the Government House in Asaba, held with the theme: The Enemies Within.

The governor’s wife who recalled the program was initiated by her predecessor, Mrs. Roli Uduaghan thirteen years ago, noted the annual prayer sessions has become a veritable platform for women in the state to address societal challenges through prayers.

Wife of Delta State Governor, Dame Edith Okowa says orphans are a special group of people who require special attention from well-meaning individuals to achieve their full potentials.

Dame Okowa stated this at the Government House Asaba during an event to celebrate World Orphans Day, where she donated food items to forty-seven orphanage homes under her pet project known as “05 Initiative”.

Radio Nigeria’s Oghenero Eghweree reports that the beneficiaries included a set of all-girls quintuplets who lost their mother at birth.
