Stakeholders at the public hearing on the Ogun State Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Commission Bill have unanimously backed the proposed law, saying it will strengthen social justice, ensure equitable representation, and protect vulnerable groups across sectors.

Representatives of various organisations said the bill would institutionalize fair practices and widen protection mechanisms for marginalized individuals and communities.

They urged closer collaboration between the executive and legislature to secure early gubernatorial assent and recommended that global DEI obligations cited in the bill be clearly outlined.

Declaring the forum open, the Speaker of the Ogun State House of Assembly, OGHA, Mr Oludaisi Elemide, said the bill was introduced to promote public orientation, equity, and inclusion for peaceful coexistence.

The bill’s sponsor and Deputy Speaker, Mrs Bolanle Ajayi, said it would entrench fairness, enhance representation, and prohibit discrimination in all spheres.

Also speaking, the Ogun State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Mrs Adijat Adeleye, said the DEI bill remains a priority for both arms of government, noting ongoing efforts to ensure state facilities comply with accessibility standards.

Earlier, the Chairman of the House Committee on Women Affairs and Chief Whip, Mrs Omolola Bakare, said the commission would create a structured platform for marginalized groups to participate in governance, economic development, and social life.

Ondo State House of Assembly has appointed Mr Ololade Gbegudu representing Okitipupa constituency 2, as the new Deputy Speaker.

This followed the resignation of the former Deputy Speaker, Prince Abayomi Akinruntan.

In the resignation letter addressed to speaker and read at plenary, Prince Akinruntan said he took the decision in order to align with the power sharing formula in the state.

The House also appointed Mr Olatunji Oshati, member representing Ose constituency as the House Majority Leader to replace Mr Oluwole Ogunmolasuyi representing Owo constituency 1 who had been occupying that position since the 9th assembly.

Addressing the parliament the new Deputy Speaker , Mr Gbegudu appreciated members for the confidence reposed in him and promised to carry out his duties to bring dividends of democracy to the people of Ondo State.

In an address , the Speaker, Mr Olamide Oladiji congratulated the new appointees and charged them to bring in their vast experiences in piloting the affairs of the parliament.

The Deputy Speaker, House of Representatives, Mr. Benjamin Kalu has described as reprehensible and repugnant the murder of Abia-born businessman, Emmanuel Okocha by a police officer in Aba on Saturday.

Mr. Okocha, a native of Abiriba in Ohafia Local Government Area of the state was allegedly gunned down on his way to the village by a police corporal, Obagi Njok attached to the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) within the Aba Division for refusing to give bribe after the officers went through his vehicle papers on demand at a checkpoint along Aba-Owerri road.

Incidentally, the Abia State Police Command has since announced the arrest of Njok.
Reacting to the development, Mr. Kalu in a statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Levinus Nwabughiogu said the police authorities must ensure that justice is served in the matter.

He said the officer involved must be brought to face the law and the corresponding punishment if found culpable, wondering why he jettisoned professionalism and the proper rules of engagement.

The Deputy Speaker said the Nigerian laws are against the twin offenses of bribe and murder alleged to have been committed by the police officer while on duty.

Commiserating with the family of the deceased over the irreparable and irreplaceable loss, Mr. Kalu, urged them to have faith in the authorities, assuring of his determination to see that the course of justice is not perverted.

The Deputy Speaker also appealed to Aba residents to remain calm and wait for the outcome of the investigations, stressing that the consequences of taking laws into their hands could be grave.

He called on the police hierarchy to update his office with the proceedings of the investigations.

Ogun State House of Assembly has confirmed the nomination of Justice Adebisi Femi-Segun for appointment as the President of the Customary Court of Appeal in the state, saying she is fit and worthy to occupy the office. 

The confirmation followed a motion moved by the majority leader, Mr Yusuf Sheriff, seconded by the minority leader, Mr Lukman Adeleye and supported by the whole House through a voice vote.

The confirmation was done shortly after the adoption of the report on the confirmation of the nominee of the governor for appointment as the President of the Customary Court of Appeal, Ogun State.

The report was earlier presented by the Deputy Speaker, Mrs Bolanle Ajayi, while the majority leader, Mr Yusuf Sheriff moved a motion for its adoption, which was seconded by Mr Lukmon Atobatele and supported by the entire House through a unanimous voice vote.

The Osun State House of Assembly, OSHA, has held a public hearing on the Osun State Disability Protection Bill as part of the process of enacting a law for persons living with disabilities.

The bill would go a long way in guaranteeing the fundamental rights of Persons with Disabilities amongst other numerous benefits.

Speaking the Deputy Speaker, Mr. Akinyode Oyewusi stated this during the public hearing on the bill, held at the Assembly Complex, Osogbo.

Mr. Oyewusi emphasized the need for the state to have a law which would protect persons with disabilities noting that they are equally members of the society and should be protected.

The deputy speaker who recalled that the National Assembly enacted an act, “Discrimination against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act” in 2018, said domesticating it in the state would go a long way to guarantee the fundamental rights of persons with disabilities in Osun State.

In their separate royal messages, the monarch of Oke-Ila town, Oba Adedokun Abolarin, the Owamiran of Esa-Oke, Oba Adeyemi Adediran and the Kabiyesi of Ibokun, Oba Festus Awogboro represented by the Saaba the town described the bill as timely and suggested the establishment of an institution to do a thorough research on ways to further improve the lives of persons with disabilities.

Responding on their behalf, the state chairman, Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities, JONAPID, Mr. Stephen Oluwafemi appreciated the sponsor of the bill and other legislators of the 8th Assembly for deeming it fit to design the bill.

Following his emergence as the Chairman of Conference of Speakers on Saturday, the Deputy Governor of Oyo State, Barrister Bayo Lawal has led other top government functionary to give the Oyo State House of Assembly, OYHA Speaker, Honourable Adebo Ogundoyin a hero’s welcome.

The Deputy Governor was joined by the Chief Justice of Oyo State, Justice Iyawo Yerima, Secretary to the State Government, SSG, Professor Olajumoke Adeyemo, Deputy Speaker, Honourable Muhammed Fadeyi, former Deputy Speaker, Abdul-wasi Musah, commissioners and other members of the House of Assembly.

Honourable Adebo Ogundoyin, who was hosted to the reception at Western Hall of the Parliament Building, House of Assembly Complex, Secretariat on Monday, was celebrated by loyalists from Ibarapa East and Oyo State as a whole.

In his goodwill message, the Deputy Governor, Barrister Bayo Lawal, assured that the Governor Seyi Makinde’s led administration will continue to cooperate with the legislative and the judiciary arms of government to keep moving the state forward.

“Once again, under the leadership of Governor Seyi Makinde, we will continue to cooperate with the legislature and judiciary to keep moving the state forward”.

“Oyo State is coming stronger and is going to be the best state in Nigeria. From what we have been doing together, we are well focused in such a way that the primary assignment of each arm of government is for Oyo State to prosper and grow”.

Barr Lawal described the leadership qualities of the speaker as a unique one that is worthy of emulation.

He said that Ogundoyin’s humility and leadership style paved way for his emergence as the Chairman of Conference of Speakers.

“It’s not ordinary that young people are occupying position of authority, they can only come out stronger with their initiatives and resourcefulness. And I am happy that you are endowed with these,” Barr Lawal said.

“We will continue to pray for the speaker, encourage him, and continue to seek for the support of the 10th House of Assembly in all ramifications,” the Deputy Governor said.

Speaking separately, the Secretary to the State Government, SSG, Professor Olanike Adeyemo and Chief Justice of Oyo State, commended the leadership style and administrative acumen of the speaker.

They, therefore, wished him a successful tenure in office.

In his address, Honourable Adebo Ogundoyin, expressed gratitude to Governor Seyi Makinde, supporters, and members of the Oyo State House of Assembly for providing him the opportunity to become the House speaker.

While attributing the achievement to the track records of successes achieved by the Governor Seyi Makinde’s led administration in the state, the Speaker disclosed that it is God that is working to bring Oyo State back to the Pacesetter.

Mr Ogundoyin reiterated his commitment to Oyo State as his first constituency, promising that he will not compromise it to ensure that it function optimally.

Ogun State government is collaborating with the United Kingdom and the South African Government to create a Forest Reserve in Ijebu-East Local Government Area of the State. 

Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun who made this known while addressing the people of Ijebu-East local government, said his administration would also work with Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, towards reviving the Olokola Liquefied Natural Gas, OKLNG, project.

While pointing out that Ijebu-East was blessed with natural resources, the governor gave the assurance that his administration would urgently rehabilitate all the roads in the local government area which were in a deplorable state.

Governor Abiodun who also maintained that his administration would continue to give priority to local government areas while implementing developmental projects, pointed out that the state government would revive numerous rubber plantations across the state.

Also, the Deputy Speaker, Ogun State House of Assembly, OGHA, Mr. Akeem Balogun, commended the state government for keeping its promise of giving equal attention to all parts of the state.

The Ondo State House of Assembly, ODHA, has passed into laws, a bill for the establishment of the State Security Trust Fund and a law to provide for the establishment of Ondo State House of Assembly Service Commission.

The passage of the two bills was done at a plenary following submission of reports by committees’ chairmen, the Deputy Speaker, Reverend Samuel Aderoboye and Chairman House committee on Security, Mr. Ololade Gbegudu for consideration and approval.

Presenting the report, Reverend Aderoboye noted that the bill would regulate the activities of the House and the commission with regards to appointment, promotion of members of staff among others.

On Security Trust Fund, Mr. Gbegudu explained that the bill would provide alternative source of funding for security operations in the state towards helping them carry out their constitutional functions efficiently.

The Majority Leader, Mr. Oluwole Ogunmolasuyi then moved the motion for the bills to be passed into law and was seconded by Mr. Gbenga Omole.

The speaker, Mr. Bamidele Oleyelogun commended the committees for jobs well done in an efforts to align with best practiced democratic tenets.

Ogun State House of Assembly has constituted a 5- man ad-hoc Committee to investigate allegations levelled against the Deputy Speaker, Mr. Dare Kadiri on alleged gross misconduct with a directive to the committee to submit its findings within 72 hours.

The Speaker of the house,Mr  Olakunle Oluomo,  announced the membership of the Committee at the plenary session held in the Assembly Complex, Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.

The members includes:Mr Yusuf Sheriff, to serve as the Chairman, Mr Abdul Bashir Oladunjoye,  Mrs Bolanle Ajayi, Mr Adeyemi Ademuyiwa, Mrs Modupe Mujota  as members while the Director of Committee of the Assembly, Mr. Temitope Hokon, would serve as Secretary.

The Constitution of the Committee followed the adoption of the Report on the Notice for Removal of the Deputy Speaker, Mr. Dare Kadiri from Office for Gross Misconduct as presented by the Clerk and Head of Legislative Services, Mr. Deji Adeyemo.

In another development, the Assembly has confirmed the appointment of Governor Dapo Abiodun’s nominees for the post of Chairman and members of the State Independent Electoral Commission,OGSIEC having found them eligible and suitable to assume the offices 

The approval was sequel to the adoption of the report of the Committee of the Whole House chaired by Speaker Oluomo, as presented by the Majority Leader, Mr. Yusuf Sheriff, who also moved the motion for its adoption and seconded by Mrs Bolanle Ajayi.

The nominees are: Mr. Babatunde  Osibodu Chairman and other members including Mr. Olatunji  Akoni, Mr. Tajudeen  Omolaja, Mr. Ayodele . Bankole and Mrs. Gbemi Onasanya.

The Ogun State Police Command says the arrest of the Deputy Speaker, of the Ogun State House of Assembly, OGHA, Mr Oludare Kadiri is to aid investigation into the allegations of misconduct leveled against him.

The Command’s Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Mr Abimbola Oyeyemi confirmed the lawmaker’s arrest to Radio Nigeria in Abeokuta. 

Mr Oyeyemi said the Deputy Speaker was accused of leading thugs to the house of a former lawmaker where they allegedly attacked the man and vandalised his house.

Meanwhile, a document bearing the purported signature of twenty out of twenty-six lawmakers at the Assembly calling for the removal of the deputy speaker, Mr Oludare Kadiri, over alleged gross misconduct has gone viral. 

The document dated 23rd February, 2021 and addressed to the Clerk of the House, had alleged Mr Kadiri of insubordination, involvement of external bodies in the assembly’s affairs and abuse of office by engaging in conducts likely to cause a breach of the peace. 

Radio Nigeria gathered that there had been lingering disagreements among stalwarts of the ruling party, All Progressives Congress, APC, in Ijebu North Local Government Area, where the Deputy Speaker hails from. 

The recent incident was attributed to issues bordering on supremacy battle amongst political leaders in the local government over the control of machinery for the party’s registration and revaluation exercise in the council area.

The Ekiti State House of Assembly, EKHA, has screened and confirmed seven commissioner nominees recently forwarded to it by Governor Kayode Fayemi.

The exercise took place at the Assembly complex in Ado Ekiti where the Deputy Speaker, Mr Akeem Jamiu and Mr Aribasoye from Ikole Constituency I as well as few other lawmakers asked questions from the nominees on their areas of specialization.

After the questions, the House unanimously confirmed the appointments of the nominees, urging them to justify the confidence reposed in them.

Those confirmed were a former Deputy Governorship candidate of the Labour Party in Ekiti state, Alhaja Maryam Ogunlade from Emure, a former chairman of Labour party, Mr Akin Omole from Oye and a former commissioner, Otunba Diran Adesua – Ekiti East local government.

Others are Prince Olabode Adetoyi – Moba, Dr. Mrs Olabimpe Aderiye – Ido Osi, Dr. Oye Filani – Ikole and Princess Iyabo Fakunle from Ilejemeje.

In their brief remarks, some of the nominees, including, Mr Akin Omole, Mr Oye Filani and Otunba Duran Adesua expressed their determination to add value to the policies and programmes of the Governor Fayemi – led administration.

The House also confirmed the nomination of the present Commissioner for Land and Housing, Mr Febisola Adewale as chairman Local Government Service Commission and Professor FEMI Akinwumi as Chairman, Ekiti state Universal Basic Education Board SUBEB as well as seven special Advisers.

The Osun State House of Assembly, OSHA, has confirmed the appointment of Mr. Salman Adebayo as Commissioner, Judiciary Service Commission, Osun State.

The lawmakers after careful review of the screening and his pedigree as a legal luminary of repute and having found out that no petition followed his appointment, the speaker, Mr. Timothy Owoeye announced his confirmation.

Mr. Adebayo was confirmed after the motion moved by majority leader, Mr. Maroof Olanrewaju and seconded by Deputy Speaker, Mr. Simeon Popoola.

The speaker, Mr. Owoeye advised the new commissioner to discharge his duties without fear or favour and should through his service bring sanity into the Judiciary Service Commission in the state.

The speaker said the state governor could proceed with the swearing in of the new commissioner.

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State inaugurated the ninth State House of Assembly on the 10th of June last year which led to the emergence of Mr Adebo Ogundoyin as the speaker.

One year down the line, how has the assembly faired in its constitutional roles and responsibilities as the second tier of government?

After the inauguration, the lawmakers, who are 32 in number, elected among themselves eight principal officers and later inaugurated twenty-five standing committees for the purpose of effective legislative performance.

Some of the activities of the assembly during the year under review, border around making laws and provision of community services to the constituents.

The legislators also embarked on familiarization tours and courtesy calls on some corporate organizations and security agencies in the state. 

Aside discharging its statutory responsibility of screening and confirming nominees into the state political offices, the present assembly in Oyo state has passed thirty-four bills, thirty-seven motions while eighty-two resolutions were adopted.

One of the important bills passed so far by the assembly was a legal framework for the much talked about Oyo State Security Network Agency Bill, codenamed “Amotekun Corps” which is in tandem with the southwest Governors’ initiative to create a regional security outfit for the protection of lives and property. 

Other significant bills included the Open Rearing and Grazing Regulation Bill 2019, Investment Promotion Agency Bill 2019, and Oyo State Anti-Graft Agency Bill 2019.

Some of the notable events in the present assembly during the year under review were the passage of the 2020 State Appropriation Bill of 208 billion naira into law, the approval of seven point six billion naira loan to boost farm settlements in Akufo and Eruwa areas of Oyo state in October 2019 and the recent approval for the executive to access twenty billion naira contractor-financing-loan-facility as well as the two point five billion naira CBN credit-support-intervention-fund for the health sector in the state.

Just like other spheres of life, the Oyo State 9th assembly is also affected by the effects of the Novel Coronavirus pandemic as the lawmakers unanimously agreed to a thirty percent cut in its monthly allocation from the executive.

Events in the assembly cannot be said to be complete without mentioning the recent controversies among the lawmakers occasioned by a supposed rumour of impeachment of the speaker, Mr Adebo Ogundoyin and that of the governor and his deputy which the leadership of the house denied and passed a vote of confidence on the governor during its plenary.

Speaking on the activities of the assembly in its first legislative year, chairman House Committee on Media and Information, Mr Kazeem Olayanju said though many of the lawmakers are first time members, they have been able to surmount their challenges through their commitment to repositioning Oyo state to greater heights. 

Reacting on the delay in the implementation of a number of laws passed and motions adopted, especially the Amotekun and the anti-grazing laws, chairman, House Committee on Legislative Compliance, Mr Adeola Bamidele claimed that the dichotomy between the federal and state governments as well as little or no commitment from relevant agencies were responsible for the non-implementation of some of the house resolutions.

In a chat with radio Nigeria, the deputy speaker, Mr Abiodun Fadeyi who believed that the recent signing of executive order for financial autonomy for state legislatures will bring about quality legislation at the state level, advised the Nigerian Governors Forum, NGF, to look into the workability of the order considering the present economic downturn occasioned by coronavirus pandemic.

In his opinion, a public affairs analyst and political scientist, Dr Babatunde Oyedeji commended the lawmakers saying the achievement of the Governor Seyi Makinde administration shows the understanding between the executive and the legislative arms.

As the 9th assembly begins another journey of 365 days, it is hoped that the lawmakers will prioritise quality legislations and people-oriented laws and also sustain its harmonious relationship for the progress of Oyo state.

The Osun State House of Assembly, OSHA, says it will organize a public hearing on Osun Kidnapping Prohibition Bill 2019.

The Speaker, Mr. Timothy Owoeye, who stated this during plenary session, said the hearing would give stakeholders the opportunity to contribute their opinion to the bill before passage.

The bill sponsored by the Speaker, seeks to address the issue of kidnapping in the state, proffer solution as well as decide sanctions for punishing kidnappers.

Also, the Speaker announced to the House the constitution of Adhoc committee to address the public petitions sent to the House pending the substantive inauguration of House Committee Chairmen.

The committee to be headed by the Deputy Speaker, Mr. Olufemi Popoola has five other members with the Director of Legal Services as Secretary.
