The University of Ibadan, UI, will have a new Vice-Chancellor from November 1, 2026, after the Governing Council appointed the current Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Administration, Professor Peter Olamakinde Olapegba, as the institution’s 14th Vice-Chancellor.

The Governing Council approved Professor Olapegba’s appointment at its meeting on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, following the recommendation of the Joint Council-Senate Selection Board.

A statement by the Directorate of Public Communication said the Council initiated the selection process in line with the extant rules governing the appointment of a Vice-Chancellor.

The Council interacted with all eight candidates on Tuesday, July 21, and shortlisted five candidates in order of merit for the final interview.

The Joint Council-Senate Selection Board subsequently interviewed the five shortlisted candidates, after which Professor Olapegba emerged as the best candidate for the position.

He will succeed the incumbent Vice-Chancellor when the office becomes vacant on November 1, 2026.
