Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo state says his administration considers education as one of the cardinal agenda that government at all levels must give to this generation for prosperity.

He stated this at the 17th convocation ceremony of the Oyo State College of Health Science and Technology, Eleyele, Ibadan.
Governor Makinde who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government,Mrs Olubamiwo Adeosun explained that his administration’s poise for education has accounted for the huge investment in the education sector.
Earlier, the Provost of the institution, Muritala Ayansiji noted that through Governor Makinde’s political will and huge financial commitment, the college had secured accreditation for some courses to the existing ones.
The event had in attendance Commissioner for Health, Dr Bashir Bello and Commissioner for Education Science and Technology, Mr Olasunkanmi Olaleye.

Oyo State government has advocated an aggressive awareness creation and case finding to end the scourge of tuberculosis in the state.


The state Commissioner for Health, Dr Bashir Bello stated this in Ibadan during a news briefing to commemorate this year’s World Tuberculosis Day in collaboration with Breakthrough Action Nigeria and other partners.


Dr Bello pointed out that treatment for Tuberculosis in Oyo State is free, hence the need for people to go for screening when there is persistent coughing for two weeks or more.


The commissioner revealed that there are 539 health facilities offering direct observed treatment for tuberculosis and ten laboratories across the state.

The Oyo State Coordinator, Breakthrough Action Nigeria, Mrs Oluwatoyin Afachung, explained that myths and misconceptions about Tuberculosis was one of the major challenges affecting the treatment of the disease.


Mrs Afachung enjoined people to go screening in order to prevent the disease from spreading.


The theme for this year’s World Tuberculosis day is “The Clock is Ticking”.

Female Genital Mutilation, FGM, which is the cutting or total removal of the external female genitals, has been described as a violation of human rights, health and integrity of girls and women.

This was stated by the wife of the governor of Oyo state, Mrs Tamunominini Makinde at a program to commemorate this year’s International Day of Zero Tolerance for FGM.

Mrs Makinde who called for collaborative effort to end the practice said the act had cause physical torture to girls and women, thereby leading to emotional pains.

The Oyo State female genital mutilation coordinator, Mrs Balqis Olawoyin said the practice was due to a cultural belief which was age-long thereby making it difficult to eradicate the practice totally especially in the grassroots areas.

Mrs Olawoyin who said the state government had employed the assistance of local surveillance officers to monitor those still carrying out the activities noted that a particular local government in Oyo state had the highest number of FGM cases according to report.

In a reaction, the national grand patron of circumcisers, Chief Abiola Ogundokun advised government to empower them by setting them up economically as this step of eradicating FGM will make them jobless.

The state’s Commissioner for Health, Dr Bashir Bello said FGM usually leaves a permanent scar on the victim, hence the need to stop it.

The program had in attendance traditional birth attendants, local circumcisors, mothers and religious organizations.

Commissioner for Health in Oyo State, Dr Bashir Bello, has assured residents of the state of continued efforts at curtailing the spread of COVID-19 which has entered its second wave.

The commissioner stated this in an interview with Radio Nigeria in Ibadan.

Dr Bello noted that the present administration has pledged to make the wellbeing of the residents its top priority.

The health commissioner noted that as the Pacesetter State, different approaches will continue to be used to reduce the spread of coronavirus.

Dr Bello, however, urged residents to continue to support the government’s effort by adhering to all COVID-19 protocols as reeled out by the Nigerian Centre for Disease Control, NCDC.

Oyo State Commissioner for Health, Dr Bashir Bello says there is no evidence to back recent claims of a cholera outbreak in Lagun Village of Lagelu Local Government area of the State.

A report by the ministry’s technical committee which investigated the matter signed by the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Bashir Bello indicates that the claims of cholera outbreak are unfounded.

Dr Bello said the investigation by the technical team did not show any fresh grave or fresh burial ground to ascertain claims of mass death.

According to the report, the Ministry has placed pre-positioned antibiotics and intravenous fluids at the state’s health facility in Lagun to prevent an outbreak of cholera in the area.

The Commissioner added that the state has also begun an active case search in affected communities and neighbouring states as well as community engagement and enlightenment on the prevention of diarrheal diseases including cholera.

He maintained that the ailment could be ascribed to poor hygienic conditions, adding that the Ministry also suspected cases of gastroenteritis or likely food poisoning.

“The Ministry has also embarked on community engagement and enlightenment on prevention of diarrheal diseases including cholera”.

Oyo State Governor, Engineer Seyi Makinde has commissioned another Covid-19 Isolation Centre in Awe, Afijio Local Government Area of the state where he declared that his administration’s goal of revamping the health sector remains unshaken.

The governor who was represented by the Deputy Governor,Engineer Rauf Olaniyan stated that the current administration in Oyo was set to remodel health facilities in all the nooks and crannies of the state.

A statement by the Chief Press Secretary to Governor Makinde, Mr. Taiwo Adisa says the commissioned Awe Isolation Centre was a testament to the government’s commitment to mitigating the impact of COVID 19.

According to the statement, the centre will cater for the well-being of the citizens and residents of all the four local government areas in Oyo town.

The governor called on all relevant stakeholders to collaborate with the government to ensure a world class service in healthcare delivery. 

Earlier, the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Bashir Bello, said that plans were ongoing to site isolation centres in all parts of the state, especially in Ogbomoso, Oke-Ogun and Ibarapa. 

According to him, after the first confirmed case of the virus in the state, the Olodo Infectious Disease Centre and the Agbami Isolation Centre have both been commissioned to aid the state’s Covid-19 containment efforts. 

The member representing Afijio State Constituency in the Oyo State House of Assembly, OYHA, Mr Seyi Adisa, who also spoke at the event, appreciated the efforts of the Seyi Makinde-led administration for not leaving the place to lay waste because according to him, the structure has been deserted for years since it was built in 2004.

The high intake of narcotics and other psychotropic substances has been listed as the major factor responsible for the increased rate of criminality in society.

National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA Commander in Oyo state, Mrs Josephine Obi stated this while celebrating this year’s International Day against Drug and Trafficking at the Secretariat, Ibadan.

Mrs Obi noted that though, the command was working effectively against drug abuse and trafficking but the support of community tradition and religious leaders would go a long way in eradicating the act.

Mrs Obi added that NDLEA had embarked on series of campaigns through media and visits to schools, markets and rural areas to bring home the message about the negative effects of drugs on individual and the nation at large.

Corroborating this, Commissioner for Health in Oyo state, Dr Bashir Bello said with the Covid-19 pandemic, the wrong usage or overdose of drugs may trigger severe conditions on people’s health.

Dr Bello noted that the state government had partnered different stakeholders to ensure that the issue of drug abuse, especially among youths, became a thing of the past.

The health commissioner therefore called on parents and guardians to always monitor the movements of their wards and kids to support the government in the fight against drug abuse.
