The Ekiti State Government has dismissed a surgeon at the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital, EKSUTH, Ado-Ekiti, for illegally removing the two kidneys of a teacher, Mr. Joshua Afolayan, during surgery.The dismissal takes immediate effect.

The action followed the approval and implementation of recommendations by a seven-member Panel of Enquiry chaired by Professor Francis Faduyile, set up to investigate the incident.

In a statement, the Commissioner for Health, Dr. Oyebanji Filani, said all members of the surgical team present in the theatre on the day of the operation have been suspended for one month, pending further administrative review.

Dr. Filani announced that the Ekiti State Government will fully fund a new kidney transplant for Mr. Afolayan.

He added that the government will also cover the cost of post-transplant care and transplant-related medical maintenance for a period of two years.

According to the Health Commissioner, the government will carry out a comprehensive reorganisation of relevant departments within EKSUTH to strengthen clinical governance, accountability, and patient safety.

He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to protecting patients, enforcing ethical and professional standards, and restoring public confidence in the Ekiti State health system.

Ekiti State Governor, Dr Kayode Fayemi wants residents across the state to always seek early medical attention to their health challenges in government hospitals to prevent untimely death.

The Governor gave the advice today In Ado Ekiti while inaugurating four ambulances recently purchased to strengthen the newly launched Ekiti State Ambulances Services, EKSAMS.

Dr Fayemi noted that the current death rate through illnesses and accidents were on the increase as a result of the uncared and nonchalant attitude of residents to their health status.

He said the ambulances would be deployed to hospitals in the three senatorial districts in addition to the existing ones to cater for the needs of the people during emergencies.

The Governor gave assurance that government would continue to work with relevant stakeholders and development partners to enable Ekiti to lead in the health service providers.

Earlier, the state commissioner for health and human services, Dr Oyebanji Filani said the ministry was prepared more than ever before to respond quickly to any health need of the people.

In furtherance to commitment to adequate health care services, the Ekiti State government has invested more in its medical facilities.

To this end, the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital internal road network was rehabilitated while a new oxygen plant, opthalmological centre and Dentistry were built.

At the inauguration of the facilities at the Hospital premises in Ado Ekiti, the wife of the State Governor, Erelu Bisi Fayemi appealed to residents not to abandon them but make judicious use of the infrastructure for their health benefit.

“This hospital is not the same as we have met it, the present government cannot afford to toy with the health of the citizens because if people are not healthy they cannot go to farms, offices, schools and other places, She said.

Earlier, the State Commissioner for Health and Human Services, Dr Oyebanji Filani emphasized that the development was to show how critical and significant the health needs of people to government and also urged people to take advantage of it.

The Chief Medical Director of the Teaching Hospital, Professor Kayode Olabanji noted that the new facilities would contribute in no small measure to accreditation of some programmes in the university teaching hospital, place staff and patients in a more conducive environment for better output.

He maintained that all the projects inaugurated at the Hospital premises would add to improved health service delivery and in turn boost the internally Generated Revenue of the State.

Professor Olabanji encouraged the government never to relent in empowering the Teaching Hospital which serves as an apical referral centre for all hospitals in the state so as to be able to fulfil the role of salvaging the lives of the teeming population beyond the capacity of primary and secondary level care facilities.

The Chief Medical Director also advised all adults to seek services at the dental centre at least twice a year.
