Ekiti State Governor, Dr Kayode Fayemi has approved the disbursement of about 100 million naira as a scholarship award to 469 students of the state origin in tertiary institutions across the country.

The State’s Commissioner for Education, Science and Technology, Dr. Bimpe Aderiye made this known to newsmen in Ado Ekiti.

Dr Aderiye said the state government had commenced electronic payment to bank accounts of beneficiaries of the awards.

She beneficiaries of the scholarship awards to include 31 physically challenged, 288 undergraduates as well as 150 postgraduate students consisting of 71 Masters and 79 Ph.D. students.

The commissioner explained that undergraduates and physically challenged students were given 60 thousand naira each while Masters students got 250 thousand naira and their Ph.D. counterpart, received 750 thousand naira.

Dr Aderiye said the state government signed an agreement with each awardee to provide them immediate employment for two years after graduation.

She reiterated the commitment of the Fayemi-led administration to the welfare of all students from the state.

Dr Aderiye however urged the beneficiaries to reciprocate government gesture by concentrating on their studies and shunning vices that may be inimical to their success.

The Ekiti State Government has suspended the Principal of Methodist Girls High School, Ifaki Ekiti, Mrs Ogundipe Bolatito Adetutu for alleged dereliction of duty.

The Commissioner for Education, Mr Foluso Daramola announced the suspension in a statement in Ado Ekiti.

Mr Daramola directed the principal to hand over the management of the school to the most Senior Vice-Principal pending disciplinary action by the Teaching Service Commission.

The commissioner explained that the principal was not in the school during an on-the-spot assessment of Governor Kayode Fayemi to public secondary schools ahead of today’s resumption of students in SS3 class.

Mr Daramola noted that non-availability of the principal to receive the governor and his entourage particularly members of COVID-19 Task force affected the visit despite the fact that notice was sent to all public schools on the planned visit.

Ekiti State Government has announced that schools will reopen in the state on August 3 for pupils and students in graduating classes.

The Commissioner for Education, Mr Foluso Daramola made this known to newsmen in Ado Ekiti, said commissioners for Education in the South-West held virtual meeting where each state was told to plan for schools resumption.

Mr Daramola explained that pupils in Primary 6, and students in JSS 3 as well as those in SSS 3 are to resume on the third of August, 2020.

He advised parents and guardians to provide three face masks for their children and wards while government would make available all protective materials needed to fight Covid-19 by the public schools.

Mr Daramola stated that any private school with two gates must close one to control movement in and out of the school, adding that authorities of private primary and secondary schools should make available all materials required to contain the spread of Covid-19 in the state.

He however announced that government had banned the use of school buses by private schools to convey students to their various schools.

The commissioner said the step was part of the government’s effort to check the spread of coronavirus in the state.
