FG Commences Nationwide Revenue Recovery Exercise

By Web News 21 October 2025 491

To boost inflows into the Federation Account and plug financial leakages across key revenue-generating agencies, the federal government has commenced a nationwide revenue recovery exercise .

This was disclosed at a meeting held on Monday, October 20, 2025, at the headquarters of the Revenue Mobilisation Allocation and Fiscal Commission in Abuja, where its Chairman, Dr. Mohammed Shehu, OFR, hosted the Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service, Zacch Adedeji, for the formal inauguration of consultants engaged for the revenue recovery exercise.

A statement signed by the RMAFC Head of the Information and Public Relations Unit, Maryam Yusuf, on Monday indicated that the initiative is part of efforts to enhance fiscal transparency, strengthen accountability, and ensure that all statutory revenues due to the Federation are duly remitted.

According to report, on Monday an ongoing probe of alleged revenue under remittance of $42.37bn, an equivalent of N12.91tn, to the federation account between 2011 and 2017.

In his remarks, the RMAFC Chairman reaffirmed the Commission’s determination to strengthen Nigeria’s fiscal governance and ensure that all revenues due to the Federation are fully accounted for and remitted into the Federation Account.

According to him, “This exercise is not a routine administrative action but a deliberate, result-orientated innovation designed to strengthen fiscal governance and ensure every recoverable naira due to the Federation is transparently remitted.”

The statement notes, “In line with the constitutional responsibility of the Commission, and with the full support of Mr. President and the Special Advisor to the President on Revenue, as well as the Executive Chairman of the FIRS, this initiative for spatial recovery projects to identify and recover unremitted revenues across sectors of the economy was brought into light.”

The FIRS Chairman, represented by the Coordinating Director of FIRS, Shettima Tamadi, who inaugurated the consultants, commended the RMAFC Chairman for his proactive leadership and also reaffirmed the FIRS’s commitment to effective collaboration with the Commission in realising the objectives of the recovery programme.

He said, “Nigeria has a huge revenue gap, but with stronger collaboration between agencies and partners, we can bridge that gap and achieve sustainable fiscal growth.”

In his speech, the Secretary to the Revenue Commission, Joseph Okechukwu, appreciated all stakeholders for their support and urged the consultants to work diligently to complete the assignment within the stipulated six-month time frame.

He emphasised that the consultants must ensure that all identified recoverable revenues are promptly returned to the Federation Account to support national development priorities.

Delivering his acceptance speech on behalf of the consultants, the lead consultant, Mr Temitayo Ojeleke, described the engagement as a national call to duty and assured the Commission and FIRS of their commitment to professionalism, transparency, and measurable results.

He said, “We accept this assignment as partners in Nigeria’s economic renewal, ready to deliver results that will strengthen the nation’s revenue base.”

The inauguration marks a significant milestone in RMAFC’s ongoing efforts to enhance inter-agency collaboration, improve accountability, and maximise revenue generation for the collective benefit of the federation.

Adeleke Advocates Review of Federation Account Revenue Sharing formula

By Web News 8 March 2024 482

By Funmi Ojo

Osun State Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke has called for the review of the Federation Account Revenue sharing formula as well as the moving of Solid Minerals from Exclusive to Concurrent Legislative list.

The Governor made the call in Lagos at the South West Zonal Public hearing on the new national minimum wage.

Governor Adeleke who represents the South West at the National Tripartite Minimum Wage committee, while addressing labour leaders and other delegates at the hearing, said there was a consensus on the need to increase the minimum wage but noted that a review of the revenue-sharing formula and amendment of the legislative list is necessary to boost the capacity of the states to pay the new minimum wage.

“In all our meetings and various deliberations, one thing that the committee has been able to establish is that the workers in Nigeria are due for an improved welfare package. There is a consensus for an upward review of the National Minimum Wage because the existing one has become unrealistic.

He maintained that the majority of the governments at the Sub−Nationals can hardly sustain improved wages and salaries for their workers without a significant adjustment in some of the narratives in the national economy.

“In tandem with the public outcry for the review of the sharing formula for the federation account, the time has come for the federal government to revisit the matter. There is an urgent need for the review of existing sharing formulas in favour of states and local governments.

“I call on the National Assembly through the Revenue Mobilization Allocation and Fiscal Commission (RMAFC) to urgently take decisive action to look at the ratio objectively and realistically.

Governor Adeleke noted that every state in Nigeria has been blessed with one form of natural resources or the other, appealing for the move of solid minerals from exclusive to concurrent legislative list.

On the new minimum wage, the Governor posited that workers in Osun State deserve improved wages and salaries, just as the state government is in support of a new and realistic minimum wage for all workers within the limit of the available resources.

“While it would be desirable to see that a uniform minimum wage is agreed on a national basis, it would amount to self-deceit to assume that states have equal ability to pay.

He, however, pointed out that individual states would have to negotiate with their workers and agree to a realistic and sustainable minimum wage in line with the available resources.
