The Police Command in Oyo State has debunked an alleged invasion of suspected herdsmen in a Community Secondary School in Alaropo Nla in Orire Local Government Area of the state on Thursday.

It would be recalled that reports alleged that suspected herdsmen with their cattle had invaded the school farm on Thursday morning, injuring some of the school teachers and students who wanted to prevent their cattle from grazing.

Debunking the report, the command’s spokesman, Superintendent Adewale Osifeso said that nothing of such incident happened in the school and nobody was injured as being alleged.

He said the herdsmen were peacefully grazing their cattle outside the vicinity of the school and some people began to raise false alarm.

Mr Osifeso said there was peace in the area and the state still enjoyed the peace witnessed during the recently concluded 2023 General elections.

He said the Commissioner of Police in the state, Mr Adebowale Williams had sent the Divisional Police Officer, DPO, in the area to the scene of the alleged invasion, and he confirmed the incident did not happen and the area was peaceful and calm.

Mr Osifeso, then urged the media and public to always scrutinise their source of news in order not to create unnecessary fear in the society.

Suspected herdsmen, on Thursday morning, allegedly invaded one of the public secondary schools in Oyo State, injuring students and teachers.

The herders reportedly invaded the Community Grammar School, Alaropo Nla in the Oriire Local Government Area of the state.

The herdsmen, according to an eyewitness account, numbering over twenty, allegedly invaded the school with their cattle and injured some of the students and teachers.

Some of the students and their teachers, among whom are Mr Paul Olabode, were inflicted with sword and machete cuts, while many others were left with broken legs and hands.

The source disclosed that the school had just finished morning devotion and students were preparing to settle down in their classrooms to continue their second-term examination when the herdsmen invaded the school farm with their cows grazing mindlessly on crops.

Efforts made by the students and the teachers to drive away the herdsmen were met with brutal resistance.

The school principal, Mrs Grace Alamu, who confirmed the incident to Vanguard through a telephone call, said that the incident had been reported to the police.

“I am on my way to the school. Policemen are coming to the school this morning,” she said.

Meanwhile, all efforts to contact the state’s Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Adewale Osifeso, to also confirm the invasion, proved abortive, as several calls placed to him were not answered as of the time of filing this report.

Six weeks after the abduction of Anglican Bishop, his wife and driver in Oyo State, a farm supervisor at late former Governor of the state, Otunba Adebayo Alao Akala has also been kidnapped by gunmen suspected to be Fulani herdsmen.

Recall that the Anglican Bishop of Jebba Diocese in Kwara State, Rev. Oluwaseun Aderogba alongside his wife and driver were abducted on the new Oyo/Ogbomoso expressway on June 13, 2022.

Investigation revealed that the abductee, simply identified as Christopher Bakare was kidnapped on Saturday evening at TDB farms situated at JaVa

The kidnappers are said to have reached out to both the families of the victim and the owner of the farm for a ransom of N100m.

“Yes, they are Fulani herdsmen quite alright but they speak a smattering of Yoruba.

“The victim was kidnapped on the farm amid a staccato of gunshots. We have been trying to negotiate with them even though the police had been informed.” One of the impeccable families’ sources confirmed.

All efforts to get reactions from the state Police Public Relations Officer, PPRO, Adewale Osifeso were not successful as he was not picking up his calls and reply messages sent to him on WhatsApp. When contacted also, the state Commandant of Western Nigeria Security Network, WNSN, codenamed Amotekun, Colonel Olayinka Olayanju, retd, said he was not aware of the incident.

Victor Eden, a seventeen years old student, his mother and a sister were traveling to Ajah from Ibadan on Thursday with the hope of visiting a relative.

The journey however went weird at exactly five minutes past eight, when some gunmen allegedly attacked the commercial Siena bus conveying them.

He shares his experience “At Alomaja, immediately after CRIN, some suspected herdsmen surfaced from the bush and started shooting sporadically. Our driver in a reflex action diverted into the bush, opened the vehicle’s door and fled, the other person sitting in the front also was able to escape.

We were sitting at the back of the Sienna bus, so it was hard for us to escape. Some boys sitting in the middle were equally lucky.

The man carrying my sister was already shot, so they wanted to take my mother and my sister. When I saw my sister crying, I pleaded with the bandits who were in mobile police uniforms to take me and leave my mother and sister.

Though they collected my mummy’s phone, ATM card and purse, they agreed to take me.

They kidnapped five of us and killed two who attempted to escape immediately we entered the bush and left their remains in the bush.

Two of them ushered us into the bush and conveyed us to Osugbo where we arrived at half past four.

I demanded water because I was thirsty and hungry because I had not eaten that day.

We trekked for hours from a destination to the other but I found out that they had marked the routes in the bush before they came to abduct us.

They had cut tree branches to mark each spot. So each time we got to a marked tree, they contacted someone on the phone, speaking their language.

When they contacted my family they demanded ten million naira ransom before we negotiated to five million naira, they told the two other victims they would pay ten and twenty million naira.

One of the abductors told me they buy one million naira worth of bullets for each gun. They queried us to determine our ransom. I must tell you they know all the routes in the bush because they switched off the flashlight in the night and they did not lose the track.

When my dad was bringing the ransom, they kept calling him at intervals  to let him know that they were monitoring him. They told him each bus  stop he was until he got the point where they told him he had arrived.

They asked my father to tell the Okada man that was carrying him to negotiate into the bush, but the rider, an Hausa man insisted that he was not entering bush, my dad called to inform them about the development, they instructed my father to give the phone to the rider and they conversed in a language he (my father) didn’t understand after which the rider took him there.

They instructed my father to be moving towards a direction before three armed bandits surfaced from different locations from the bush.

They paid the rider additional money and took the pain to count the money to ascertain the exact amount.

Thereafter, they told my dad to go that he would see his son.

Back to the bush where we were kept, I didn’t know my family was planning to pay the ransom because I was sure we could not raise such an amount. My father is a security man in a soap making company while my mum is a fashion designer.

I knew some of the bandits left us in the bush so when they returned, they called me “O boy your father has paid your money” with a Fulani accent. I also saw them sharing some money but I didn’t see how huge it was. One of them said you are free now, so two of them escorted me in a journey of about three hours in the bush and when they got to a spot, they stopped and showed me the express. They told me to go that my father was waiting for me. Getting out at Gambari junction near a police check point, I saw my father and ran towards him. We took a motorcycle back to Ibadan and we went to Idi-Ayunre police station where my mother had reported the case.

They are all young people, the oldest among them cannot be up to twenty-seven years of age. I thank God for saving me. I don’t know what could happen to the two people I left with them because they already told them they would kill them if their relatives waste too much time”

All I know is that they had a boss who called to know about their upkeep.

They carved their bags with sacs stocked with Indian hemp and weapons.

Farmers in Oyo State have been assured that all measures are in place to secure their lives as the State government would not allow individuals masquerading as herders to halt the pace of development in the agricultural sector of the State economy.

The Commissioner for Agriculture and Rural Development, Hon Ojemuyiwa Ojekunle, gave this assurance while addressing farmers from Ijaye Farm Settlement, at the Ministry’s conference room after a peaceful demonstration conducted within the State secretariat complex by the aggrieved farmers.

The farmers have protested the destruction of their farms by cattle herders which has led to loss of their investments in the farms within the Ijaye Farm Settlement.

The Commissioner noted that the Engr. Seyi Makinde-led administration is a government of the masses which holds farmers in high esteem, urging farmers to bear in mind that economic expansion through agriculture and its value chain is one of the four point service agenda of the administration.

Hon Ojekunle said the government understood the plights of the farmers and would not leave any stone unturned in ensuring that farmers enjoy the fruits of their labour and secure their lives as well.

Earlier, the Chairman, Ijaye Farm Settlement Farmers’ Association, Dr. Tunde Tairu while stating their grievances, said that herdsmen and their cattle have invaded their farmland and have turned farmers to slaves on government land for which they paid rent yearly.

Tairu said further that the herdsmen could not be challenged because they were armed with sophisticated weapons and farmers were being threatened with guns anytime they challenge the herders.

“In fact two days ago, one of our farmers that challenged them on his own farm got his left arm amputated right in our presence,” Tairu added.

He noted that Fulanis have been terrorizing farmers for a long time but the situation has become precarious, as the herders have continued to rape and kidnap their family and community members.

The protesters requested for massive presence of security personnel on their farmland and also appealed to the government to create an office for Amotekun officials in the community, with the belief that it would scare criminals among the herders away.

Members of Ijaye Farm Settlement Farmers Association thereafter expressed gratitude to the State government for the privilege given them to express their grievances without prejudice, while also commending the Commissioner for the native intelligence he employed in handling the situation, noting that no government has ever given them such listening ears and opportunity for dialogue.

They pleaded with the Commissioner to ensure that action is taken and promises made by the government are fulfilled in earnest.

The peace meeting also had in attendance the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mrs Bolatumi Oloko, Director of Crops and Farm Settlement, Mr. Opawusi, Director Animal Husbandry, Mr. Odedele and other members of the management team.
