The Joint Admission and Matriculations Board, JAMB, says Persons Living With Disabilities, PLWDs, who wish to sit for the 2024/2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination can register at no cost.

The JAMB Registrar, Ishaq Oloyede, made this known while rolling out the registration process for interested candidates across the country.

While announcing that registration for the 2024 matriculation examination will commence on Monday, 15th January 2024, Oloyede said JAMB will issue free application documents to all categories of Persons Living With Disability as a form of support.

“To support the PLWD, JAMB will issue free application documents to all categories of Persons Living with Disabilities in the advertisement for the 2024 UTME/DE,” he said.

Oloyede noted that measures have been put in place to ensure a smooth exercise for all candidates and audio books will be provided for all blind candidates.

The registrar said the development was a digital adaptation of the traditional reading book, noting that it will come in popular audio formats such as MP3, WMV, and WMA which will be compatible with all devices that can stream audio records.

He said the suggestion for the provision of audiobooks was made at the first National Conference on Equal Opportunity of Access to Higher Education in Nigeria.

Apart from the blind candidates, other groups to benefit from the free registration according to the examination body are people with Down syndrome, Autism, Dyslexia disorder and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.

“The following categories of candidates will now be listed under the disability group: Down syndrome, Autism, Dyslexia disorder and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity disorder (ADHD),” he said.

No fewer than 175, 000 candidates, on Saturday, participated in mock examination organized by Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), ahead of the 2022 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) scheduled to start on May 6th.

In 2016, JAMB introduced UTME mock examinations. The aim was to use the opportunity to get candidates acquainted with the Computer Based Test (CBT), neutralize their fears and anxiety, and prepare them better for the examination proper.

The mock examinations was also an opportunity for JAMB to test-run its facilities and other innovations that might have been introduced to improve efficiency, effectiveness and credibility of the examination system.

JAMB Registrar, Professor Ishaq Oloyede who monitored the exercise in some locations confirmed that mock examination held across different CBT centres in the country, and was successful.

He said: “I did sample inspections in Lagos and Ogun State, and the turnout was impressive. We are satisfied with the level of performance. In the process, a CBT Centre, Brain Point CBT Centre in Oko-Oba, Lagos State, that could not sustain their generator was automatically delisted. I gave instructions that the candidates in the Centre should be refunded their full money.

“We had assured CBT Centres of our support, and that was why we allowed the Centres to collect up to N1,000 instead on the earlier N700, so they can continue to give their best to the candidates. Some of the institutions especially tertiary institutions need to keep up and maintain their facilities because some of them are substandard.

“But we are happy with the general performance of the examination and we urge all students to make sure that they learn from the lesson of the mock examination which is to test their ability. In the two states I visited, the Centres worked very well. We only urged stakeholders to learn from the mock examination.

“175, 000 candidates sat for the examination. We limited the number because we do not want to do more than one session across the country.”

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB, has warned operators of cybercafes, tutorial centres and other entities against the use of its logo.

A statement by the Head Public Affairs and Protocols of JAMB Dr Fabian Benjamin says fraudulent operators of cybercafes, tutorial centres and other entities have formed the habit of deceiving helpless candidates through using the Board’s logo and name to defraud and extort them.

The statement explains that its Registrar, Professor Ishaq Oloyede gave the warning “in Ilorin, Kwara State, while handing over some operators of cybercafes, tutorial centres and other such operators to security agents.

The Registrar, during the engagement, warned that the Board would no longer tolerate the antics of such platforms, which, he said, are used as incubators for grooming examination infractions who use the name and logo of the Board to lend credence to their unwholesome activities.

According to him, anybody not licensed by the Board to register candidates and who goes ahead to print banners advertising the Board’s services would be arrested and prosecuted.

The Registrar further disclosed that, henceforth, the Board and the various security agencies would be combing the streets across the country to ensure that the untoward activities of fraudulent elements are curtailed.
