Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun has inaugurated the chairmen of the governing councils of the state-owned tertiary institutions with an appeal to the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, to find a lasting solution to the protracted strike by the university lecturers.

Inaugurating the Governing Councils and Members of the Library Board at June 12 Cultural Centre, Abeokuta, Governor Abiodun said the strike had left a huge gap not only in the education sector but in other sectors of the nation’s economy.

While urging the governing councils to ensure that the management of the institutions were in tandem with the developmental needs of the state, the governor stressed the need for governing councils to always offer quality advice to the government.

Governor Abiodun who pointed out that the Teaching Service Commission had started compiling the names of the state’s teaching and non-teaching staff for the year 2021/2022 promotion exercises, announced that his administration had also approved Education Intervention Fund.

Responding on behalf of the governing councils, the Pro-Chancellor of the Olabisi Onabanjo University, Professor Toyin Ashiru, promised that the governing councils would justify the confidence reposed in them.

Professor Ashiru also gave the assurance that the governing councils would reinvigorate internally generated revenue in all state-owned tertiary institutions to reduce the financial burden on the government.

Ogun State Governor, Prince Dapo Abiodun has called on the Federal Government to promote Adire fabric at the National level and adopt the attire for National events.

Prince Dapo Abiodun who made the call at the official launching of the Adire Ogun Digital Market Place held at the June 12 Cultural Center, Kuto Abeokuta, also announced that  plans were underway to make Adire fabric part of the school uniforms in the state  next year.

Governor Dapo Abiodun explained that adoption of the attire by the Federal government would go a long way in promoting the local contents in the country.

While pointing out that Federal Ministry of Youths and Sports could also make use of Adire as ceremonial dress for the athletes, the governor called on stakeholders in the information, culture and tourism sector to partner the state towards promoting national heritage.

The governor also said that the plans to use Adire Fabric as school uniform in the state would stimulate economy, empower Adire makers and enrich tailors across the state.

Governor Abiodun said that his administration would extend the Adire revolution across all the nooks and crannies of the state and urged Nigerians to adopt a positive attitude towards continuous use of indigenous fabrics.

In a remark, the Minister of Information, Culture and Tourism, Alhaji Lai Mohammed while commending Ogun State government for the project said that Adire Ogun Digital Marketplace was a confluence of culture and technology.

The minister described the digital market as a great innovation which would go a long way in creating jobs and preserving cultural and traditional heritage in the country. 

Earlier, the Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Dr Oluwatoyin Taiwo had explained that the launching of the Ogun Adire digital marketplace would reposition the industry for effective service delivery.

Ogun State Government says it is ready to host the 21st edition of the National Sports Festival, NSF.

Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Dr Oluwadare Kehinde stated this during an inspection visit by the Evaluation Bid Committee team of the Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports, who were in the State to assess sporting facilities available for hosting of the festival.

Conducting the committee round sporting facilities in Abeokuta, Sagamu and Ijebu-Ode, Dr Kehinde emphasized the state’s readiness to host the biennial sports competition in 2022, pointing out the present administration was passionate about sport development.

Speaking after the inspection, the chairman and leader of the committee, Mr Katmwan Dungse who described facilities available in Ogun State as a top-notch, said they had a better chance of hosting the festival in 2022.

Facilities inspected included MKO Abiola International Stadium, Abeokuta Sports Club, Alake Sports Center, Ijeja, June 12 Cultural Center, Kuto, Abeokuta Grammar School, Gateway International Stadium, Sagamu, NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp, Sagamu, and Dipo Dina Stadium, Ijebu-Ode.

The winning bid to host the 21st National Sports Festival in 2022 would be announced at the closing ceremony of the 20th edition of the Festival, scheduled for Edo State in March 2020.
