Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has commissioned the Awotan Landfill Project and also unveiled the Clean and Green Waste Trucks to improve environmental and social well-being of residents of the state.

Speaking at the official commissioning of the Awotan Landfill and unveiling of Clean and Green Waste Trucks, held at the Awotan Landfill, Akufo Road, Awotan, Ibadan, Governor Makinde said the project would provide job opportunities for self-reliance to 3,000 residents of the community.

He also pledged to fix the Awotan Health Centre for the community to have access to qualitative healthcare delivery.

The governor lauded the immense contribution of late former Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Mr Kehinde Ayoola, and the present Commissioner, Dr Idowu Oyeleke in making the project a reality.

Governor Makinde maintained that the success of the landfill project has led to the creation of massive job opportunities as according to him, 500 private companies have been registered for refuse collection, with each of them expected to recruit at least six people including drivers and refuse packers. 

Earlier, the Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Dr Idowu Oyeleke said the landfill project was a crucial part of the broad plan to reposition Oyo State, especially the state capital, Ibadan as a sustainable and ideal metropolitan city free from dirt and filth. 

Dr Oyeleke appealed to all house owners and facility owners, either private, commercial or industrial in Oyo State to complement the effort of the state government by promptly paying waste bills in order to achieve a safe, clean and healthy environment.

In a remark, the Alawotan of Awotan, Oba Dauda Omotosho appreciated Governor Makinde for making life more meaningful to all the residents of the Awotan community.

….says former Speaker will be giving a befitting legislative burial._

The Speaker, Oyo State House of Assembly, Mr Adebo Ogundoyin, has led a delegation of the House on a condolence visit to the family of the late Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Mr Kehinde Ayoola at their Gbekuba, Apata Ibadan residence.

Mr Ogundoyin, said it was still difficult for members of the entire 9th Oyo Assembly to believe that one of their political and legislative mentors, who was a former Speaker in the Assembly and a vibrant political actor in the present dispensation in had died.

While presenting the condolence of the Assembly to the family members at the residence as the wife and the children of the former Commissioner were said to be having a meeting with Governor Seyi Makinde, Mr Ogundoyin described the deceased as a selfless politician who would be missed for his integrity, honesty, dedication and political sagacity.

He used the medium to inform the family that the 9th Oyo Assembly will participate fully in the funeral for the late former Speaker in order to pay him their last respect and to accord him a befitting legislative honor.

Oyo State Commissioner for Environment and former Speaker House of Assembly, Mr Kehinde Ayoola is dead.

Mr Ayoola died this morning during a brief illness.

Mr Ayoola was also the Director General, Seyi Makinde Campaign Organization under the umbrella of Social Democratic Party in 2015.

Oyo state government has birthed a new waste management system that would ensure proper collection, disposal and management of waste in the state.

The state also has no plans to demolish buildings which have encroached on Awotan dumpsite. 

The Commissioner of Environment and Natural Resources, Mr. Kehinde Ayoola revealed this during a town-hall meeting held with host Communities and residents of Awotan/Akufo in Ibadan on the heels of fears nursed that houses which encroached on the space of the dumpsite might be demolished.

The commissioner who was represented by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Dr. Bashir Olanrewaju said government has put in place, proper measures to upscale the solid waste management that would solve the problem of urban solid waste management in the state.  

He added that to achieve the largely private-sector driven system, Oyo State Government has brought on board a waste management and recycling company.

He noted that the company, with over 20 years’ experience in the environment sector would assist the state in reducing pollution at Ajakanga and Awotan dumpsites and manage Oyo state’s waste management system effectively.

Mr Ayoola called for co-operation in ending the menace caused by the dumpsite. 

Responding, the Osi Baale Awotan-Adaba, Chief Amusa Akangbe and the Chairman, Awotan-Araro-Akufo Community Association, Elder Ayoade Fajimi appreciated the state government for fulfilling its promises to bring development to Awotan community.

Oyo State Government has sealed a filling station, under construction in Ibadan, based on negative impact the facility portends for a nearby Primary school and persons living within the premises.   

Commissioner of Environment and Natural Resources, Mr. Kehinde Ayoola, revealed that Oyo state government issued the directive, following petitions received from residents and business owners in the area.

The filling station, which is under construction at Apata area within Ibadan metropolis is situated very close to St. Michael’s Primary school, Apata, Ibadan and other business facilities.

According to the commissioner during a visit to the site, the development became imperative as the facility does not have environmental impact assessment report and some other necessary permit that regulates environmental activities of the state. 

Mr. Ayoola reiterated that the action was to correct the unfriendly habits of degrading the environment which might be injurious to people’s health.

The commissioner who explained that Oyo state encourages myriad of business opportunities and entrepreneurship development, said such business activities should not be carried out at the detriment of the people.

Oyo State Government has revoked its contractual agreement with West Africa Energy, due to breach of the contractual terms.

The Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Mr. Kehinde Ayoola said the company has failed in its performance under the contract it signed with Oyo State Government, which is significant enough for the state to terminate the contract.

The Commissioner cited instances where the state capital, Ibadan, has experienced unbearable heaps of refuse in the last four weeks, saying the company has not lived up to expectation in cleaning the city.

Mr. Ayoola said, being the main employer of the contractor, Oyo State Government has deemed it fit to relieve West Africa Energy of its duties, so as to ensure efficient waste management in the state.

He assured residents that the state government was taking holistic measures to ensure the state experiences a turn-around in the environmental sector, as well as, creating wealth from waste.
