Oyo State Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Mr Seun Fakorede has stated that the present administration would do everything possible to provide basic amenities, welfare and facilities for the promotion of sports and progress in the state.

Mr Fakorede said this while presenting an award to Tawakalitu Yekeen, who won gold at the just concluded 7th Edition of African Continental Track Cycling Championship in Cairo.

While appreciating Tawakalitu for representing the state well at the tournament, Fakorede also appreciated her coaches whom he described as power house that were behind her success. 

He noted that it had become a norm, since the inception of the present administration in Oyo State to recognize and celebrate outstanding athletes publicly, so as to serve as motivation and inspiration to others.

“For you to have achieved so much in just one tournament, it shows that there are more achievements waiting for you and I use this moment to assure Miss Tawakalitu Yekeen here and other youths that are making us proud in the field of sports and other areas in this state of our backing.

“The present administration in Oyo State will not relent in supporting people that will bring sporting glories to the State, facilities are already being turned around to make training and preparations for athletes to succeed,” he assured.

The General Manager, Oyo State Sports Council, Mr. Gboyega Makinde assured that more athletes were being discovered for national and international competitions.

In her response, Tawakalitu thanked those who had contributed to her achievement, most especially her mother who had been her source of inspiration.

Oyo State government has approved the procurement of one hundred and six mass transit buses to enhance intra-city mobility with an estimated cost of 9.3 billion naira. 

This is part of resolutions reached at the weekly State Executive Council meeting. 

Speaking with newsmen after the meeting, the Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Mr Seun Fakorede explained that the rapid transit system would be involved in interstate services, to assist in the mobility of agricultural produces and in turn boost the economy of the state.

Also, the Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning, Barrister Niyi Farinto explained that the council has approved the rehabilitation and construction of two link roads around Akobo, with one beside the NNPC Mega Station and the other at the General Gas axis to reduce traffic in the area. 

Mr Farinto stated that the project which would be completed within two months under direct effort labour from the Oyo State Transport and Road Management Agency (OYTROMA) would gulp an estimated cost of 64 million naira.

Youths have been challenged to brace up to take the task of leadership.

Oyo State Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Mr Seun Fakorede made the call during a press conference to commemorate the 2020 International Youth Day.

Speaking on the theme, “Youth Engagement for Global Action”, Mr Fakorede regretted that most Nigerian youths had been playing second fiddle, hence the need for them to rediscover themselves.

Mr Fakorede urged the youths to embrace programmes formulated for them for overall development.

He expressed confidence that Oyo State Government in collaboration with other bodies to change the narrative for the teeming youths in the state in particular and the country at large.
