The Oyo State Government has condemned the deliberate attack on Oyo State Sports Council Chairman, Honourable Gbenga Adewusi by hoodlums on Sunday.

During a visit to the victim at an undisclosed Hospital, Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Mr. Seun Fakorede described the incident as unfortunate and a threat to the peaceful atmosphere already being enjoying at the Pacesetter State.

He further declared that all the culprits will be brought to book and made to pay for their misdeeds.

The State Sport Council Chairman, who was attacked at the Lekan Salami Sports Complex Adamashingba by hoodlums after a match between Shooting Stars football club and Mountain of Fire (MFM) Football Club of Lagos has been receiving treatment, after sustaining severe injuries on different parts of his body.

Hence, Mr. Fakorede urged Shooting Stars fans and the entire citizenry to put their mind at rest, assuring them that mensures have been put in place to ensure the existing peace in different spots and Oyo State at large is not tempered with.

Political stakeholders have identified sports as a unifying factor that can strengthen peaceful coexistence irrespective of differences in socio-cultural and party affiliations.

They made the submission in Awe, at the commissioning of Afijio Sports Centre which was established to discover talents at the grassroots.

The lawmaker representing Afijio State Constituency in the Oyo State House of Assembly, OYHA, Mr. Seyi Adisa said sports is a sector that bridges the gap between the political divide, describing it as a tool for rapid development if properly harnessed.

Mr. Adisa who facilitated the sports facility through a public-private partnership stressed the need to intensify efforts at discovering talents at the grassroots.

Oyo State Commissioner for Youths and Sports, Mr. Seun Fakorede said the present administration in the state understands the importance of sports development to boost the socioeconomic of the people and foster peace among residents.

Also speaking, the wife of a former governor of Oyo State, Mrs. Florence Ajimobi, who described sports as a platform for the mental and physical development of children, challenged the government, individuals and private organizations to partner towards encouraging more people to participate.

Dignitaries at the commissioning included traditional rulers, some members of the Oyo State House of Assembly, House of Representatives Committee Chairman on diaspora, Mrs. Tolulope Akande-Sadipe, sports administrators and other top government functionaries. 

The Sports Centre is equipped with a mini-football pitch, basketball, volleyball and tennis courts, surrounded by solar-powered lights for proper lighting at night.

Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo state has announced reward to the state medalists at the just concluded national sports festival Edo 2020 with N500,000 to each gold medalists.

Other athletes who would receive donation were Silver medalists with the sum of N350,000 each ,bronze medalists, N250,000 each while each coach of every sport would get N500,000 each

He disclosed this when he hosted the athletic team that represented Oyo state at the Governor’s office Secretariat Ibadan.

Governor Makinde said that his administration would continue to prioritise sports development as a strategic means to productively engage youths in the state 

While lauding the Oyo state Contingent at the Edo 2020 competition, Governor Makinde implored all the medalists not to take their career to other states as being insinuated in some quarters saying the state would never disappoint them.

The commissioner for Sports, Mr. Seun Fakorede said the feat recorded by the state contingent was unprecedented.

Earlier, one of the medalists, Babalola  Mumini, made some requests bordering on employment, finance and logistics.

Oyo state government says it will go back to the grassroots to discover sports talents for the state.

The state Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Mr. Seun Fakorede made this known while speaking with Radio Nigeria in his office.

According to Mr. Fakorede, the Ministry of Youth and Sports believes in discovering raw talents for the state’s owned football clubs and there are plans to refine grassroots sports competitions such as Governor’s and Principal’s Cup football competitions to be able to tap the talents in their raw forms.

While recalling the good old days of 3SC, the sports commissioner explained that all the potentials were discovered locally, noting that the present administration had decided to return to the pattern.

“There are times that what we need is around us, so we are going back to the roots to revitalize sports because that is where we will see raw talents and we believe in their potentials” Fakorede told Radio Nigeria.

The youth commissioner who disclosed that the state was not owing any of its Athletes allowances, expressed optimism that the state’s contingent will shine at the forthcoming National Sports Festival coming up next month in Edo State.

On the ongoing remodeling of Lekan Salami stadium, Adamasingba, Ibadan, Mr. Fakorede said the project was well planned to give the state sporting sector a face lift and to attract income generation through sports.

He hinted that modalities had been put in place to ensure proper maintenance of the stadium after completion.

“We are building people in Oyo state that will build sports and facilities, and as much we are spending on the stadium, we are also spending wisely on Institutions that will maintain the stadium the way it ought to be maintained”

The Oyo state sports commissioner disclosed that the completion of the stadium would increase the chances of the state in hosting national and International Sports Competitions.

Oyo State Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Mr Seun Fakorede says the state will surpass previous achievements at the forthcoming National Sports Festival beginning in Edo state next Sunday. 

Mr Fakorede said this in Ibadan while receiving the Torch of Unity of the National Sports Festival, NSF, from the South-West Zonal Coordinator, Federal Ministry of Youth and Sports, Mr Olufemi Ajao.

He explained that adequate incentive packages have been put in place for Oyo state athletes to motivate them at the sports Festival.

The Commissioner noted that camps have been opened for athletes in designated centres across the state. 

Mr Fakorede added that two hundred and thirty-two athletes from Oyo state would be participating in twenty-nine sports at the National sports festival.

20th edition of the National Sports Festival tagged “Edo 2020” will be held between 22nd of this month to 1st of next month.

Oyo state Government has called on Corp members to embark on various programs that will develop their potentials and also boost the socio- economy of the Nation. 

The State Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Mr. Seun Fakorede said this in Ibadan at a Day program organised in his honour by Youth Corp members serving under Oyo State House of Assembly.

According to the Commissioner, Youths should make good use of their smart phones for self development and secure them from the menace of unemployment. 

Mr. Fakorede stressed further for Corp members to have adequate plans for Labour Market during their service years. 

Earlier, the Speaker of Oyo State House of Assembly, Mr. Adebo Ogundoyin enjoined the Corp members to be creative and be productive.
