Political stakeholders have identified sports as a unifying factor that can strengthen peaceful coexistence irrespective of differences in socio-cultural and party affiliations.
They made the submission in Awe, at the commissioning of Afijio Sports Centre which was established to discover talents at the grassroots.
The lawmaker representing Afijio State Constituency in the Oyo State House of Assembly, OYHA, Mr. Seyi Adisa said sports is a sector that bridges the gap between the political divide, describing it as a tool for rapid development if properly harnessed.
Mr. Adisa who facilitated the sports facility through a public-private partnership stressed the need to intensify efforts at discovering talents at the grassroots.
Oyo State Commissioner for Youths and Sports, Mr. Seun Fakorede said the present administration in the state understands the importance of sports development to boost the socioeconomic of the people and foster peace among residents.
Also speaking, the wife of a former governor of Oyo State, Mrs. Florence Ajimobi, who described sports as a platform for the mental and physical development of children, challenged the government, individuals and private organizations to partner towards encouraging more people to participate.
Dignitaries at the commissioning included traditional rulers, some members of the Oyo State House of Assembly, House of Representatives Committee Chairman on diaspora, Mrs. Tolulope Akande-Sadipe, sports administrators and other top government functionaries.
The Sports Centre is equipped with a mini-football pitch, basketball, volleyball and tennis courts, surrounded by solar-powered lights for proper lighting at night.
