Shari’ah: MMWG Warns Against Misinformation, Disinformation

Media Practitioners and opinion leaders have been encouraged to desist from spreading misinformation and disinformation about the Shari’ah Arbitration Panel in the South West.

The coordinator, Muslim Media Watch Group of Nigeria, MMWG, Ogun State Chapter, Alhaji Kamal’deen Akintunde, made the appeal in a statement in Abeokuta.

Expressing concern over the inaccurate reporting of the Shari’ah Arbitration Panel, which he said was mistaken for a Shari’ah Court; Alhaji Akintunde noted that the misconception had led to the spread of hate speech and inflammatory statements against Muslims.

Describing Shari’ah Arbitration Panel as a voluntary initiative that resolves personal matters among Muslims, and had successfully settled several matrimonial cases and personal conflicts he urged media practitioners to provide accurate and balanced information about Islamic issues.

The Muslim Media Watch Group of Nigeria Coordinator also advocated education and training on religious reporting for journalism students, to enhance their understanding of diverse religions and prevent the spread of misinformation.

Alhaji Akintunde said there was the need for media practitioners and opinion leaders to promote cordial interfaith relations, mutual respect, and harmony, rather than perpetuating negative stereotypes and misinformation.

Group Faults Calls for Betta Edu’s Reinstatement

The Muslim Media Watch Group of Nigeria, MMWG, has appealed to President Bola Tinubu not to spare any public office holder found guilty of financial misconduct or economic crimes.

The Group maintained that any form of indulgence or politicisation of criminal offences and economic crimes was capable of undermining the President’s renewed efforts at combating corruption in the country.

In a joint statement by the National Coordinator, Alhaji Ibrahim Abdullahi and the Ogun State Coordinator of the group, Alhaji Kamaldeen Akintunde, the Muslim Media Watch Group of Nigeria urged the President not to succumb to the pressure being mounted on his office to pardon public office holders currently under investigations for financial impropriety.

The Group emphasized that a recent call, reportedly made by the Arewa Unity Front, for the reinstatement of the suspended Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Dr. Betta Edu was rather hasty, noting that such intervention ought to come after the conclusion of ongoing investigations of the officials concerned.

It urged the investigation panel to live up to expectations and avoid doing the hatchet job, but to uphold standard practice and conventional process of unraveling the truth and ensuring credible outcomes.

While encouraging public office holders and other officials to be guided by their ‘oath of office and allegiance’ and avoid actions capable of tarnishing their image or erode the people’s confidence in them, the Muslim Media Watch Group of Nigeria also called on those at the helms of affairs to embrace the rule of law and promote good governance.

Remain committed to the development of Nigeria – Muslim Group

Muslims have been advised to remain committed to the development of the country as they mark new Islamic year, 1443AH.

National Adviser and Ogun State Coordinator, Muslim Media Watch Group of Nigeria, Alhaji Kamaldeen Akintunde who gave the advice in chat with Radio Nigeria in Abeokuta, said the task of nation building was a collective responsibility.

He urged Muslims to fulfill all righteousness by being law abiding and implored political leaders to be responsive and patriotic to ensure good governance.

Alhaji Akintunde who decried the insecurity challenges confronting the nation called on the federal government to find lasting solution to the problem.
